Apple updates iTunes to version 11.3.1
Apple has released iTunes 11.3.1. It's a maintenance release that addresses a problem with podcast subscriptions.
In Apple's words, iTunes 11.3.1 addresses a problem where subscribed podcasts may stop updating with new episodes and resolves an issue where iTunes may become unresponsive while browsing your podcast episodes in a list. You can obtain the update via the Mac App Store.
Graphic Node launches new Set for iWork Plus

Synology encourages users to update due to SynoLocker ransomware
Synology has been investigating and working with users affected by a recent ransomware called "SynoLocker."
Synology has confirmed the ransomware affects Synology NAS servers running older versions of DiskStation Manager, by exploiting a vulnerability that was fixed in December 2013, at which time Synology released patched software and notified users to update via various channels. Affected users may encounter the following symptoms:
° When attempting to log in to DSM, a screen appears informing users that data has been encrypted and a fee is required to unlock data.
° Abnormally high CPU usage or a running process called “synosync” (which can be checked at Main Menu > Resource Monitor).
° DSM 4.3-3810 or earlier; DSM 4.2-3236 or earlier; DSM 4.1-2851 or earlier; DSM 4.0-2257 or earlier is installed, but the system says no updates are available at Control Panel > DSM Update.

Addonics Technologies (www.addonics.com) has announced the Sapphire family of Write-Protect readers that treat hard drive, SSD or flash media as READ only storage to protect against virus contamination or data tampering.
There are two Sapphire Write-Protect readers — a 3.5”/2.5” HDD reader and a 2.5” HDD/Flash reader. Both are equipped with an interface bridge that disables the write function at the hardware level. This allows you to access data on the hard drive or flash media without the risk of accidentally erasing or altering content on the drive.
The interface bridge is a permanent feature and can’t be disabled. It protects users from accidental or intentional erasing or destruction of data, according to Addonics President Bill Kwong. Software hacking can’t be used to circumvent the write protect function, he adds. Forensic investigators can quickly discover if the interface bridge was tampered with and replaced with a read/write enabled board.

Apple, Samsung dropping all lawsuits outside the U.S.
Apple and Samsung, in a joint statement, say they've agreed to abandon all lawsuits against each other in countries outside the U.S., including Australia, Japan, South, Korea, Germany, Netherlands, the U.K., France and Italy, reports Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com).
In June the two companies agreed to drop their appeals of a patent-infringement case at the U.S. International Trade Commission that resulted in an import ban on some older Samsung phones. Apple and Google, which makes the Android mobile operating system that Samsung uses in many of its handsets, also announced a deal in May to drop lawsuits against one another related to Motorola Mobility. However, Apple and Samsung said in their joint statement that they aren’t ending the legal battles completely, nor have they reached any cross-licensing agreement, notes Bloomberg.

Apple reportedly rolls out its own content delivery system
Apple’s own CDN (content delivery network) has gone live in the U.S. and Europe, reports Seeking Alpha (http://tinyurl.com/ls3z3hg). The company is now delivering some of their own content such as new releases of Mac OS X and iOS directly to consumers.
What's more, Apple has interconnect deals in place with multiple ISPs, including Comcast and others, and has paid to get direct access to their networks, says Seeking Alpha. As a result the company has more than 10x the capacity it had previously.

Adobe announces Lightroom 5.6 and Camera Raw 8.6
Adobe has announced the availability of Lightroom 5.6 and Camera Raw 8.6 as final releases on both Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and Photoshop CS6.
This release corrects issues reported in earlier versions of Lightroom 5 and Camera Raw 8. In addition, raw file format support is added for three new cameras: the Nikon D810, Panasonic LUMIX AG-GH4 and Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000.

Connected Data launches Drobo Mini with SSD drives
Connected Data, the creator of the Drobo line of smart storage solutions, has launched its Drobo Mini with Solid State Disk (SSD) drives. The company says they deliver as much as 80% more performance compared to a Mini configured with traditional spinning hard drives.
The Drobo Mini connects via Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 and features four 2.5-inch SSD drive bays with an mSATA accelerator option in a package that is rugged, compact and portable, weighing less than three pounds. Like all Drobo products, Drobo Mini protects data without user intervention, even in the event of multiple SSD drive failures.

Total War: Shogun 2 coming to the Mac on July 31
Feral Interactive says the historical strategy game Total War: Shogun 2 for Mac will be released via Steam on July 31, with the Mac App Store version scheduled for release in early August.
Developed by Creative Assembly and published by SEGA® for Windows, this is the latest installment in the Total War series to be brought to the Mac by Feral, following Rome, Empire and Napoleon. A premium version of the game will be released simultaneously and include all additional content.
Total War: Shogun 2 Collection includes the Rise of the Samurai Campaign pack: a stand-alone campaign which challenges players to establish Japan’s first Shogunate 400 years before the events of the main game. It also includes the Dragon War Battle pack, three additional clans and two unit packs. All additional content will be available separately via Steam to customers who purchase the base game.

Alfons Schmid has announced Mac OS X and Windows versions of Notebooks, a productivity app that combines text processing with task management and file organization.
It includes text processing for plain text, formatted text and Markdown, provides space to store and organize files and documents, and also integrates complex task management. The desktop applications are designed to complement the iPad and iPhone versions of Notebooks.
Notebooks 7 (for iPad and iPhone) costs US$12.99 and are available at the Apple App Store in the Productivity category. Parliant announces new Mac voice messaging product
Parliant has announced Echoes (http://www.echoes-app.com), a new Mac voice messaging product. It's different from Skype, FaceTime, and other voice chat applications because it eliminates "dialing" or setting up connections with your recipients.
Echoes puts an icon in your menu bar where you just choose "Announce" (or press a keyboard shortcut), speak your announcement, and press return. Echoes lets you:
° Announce to other users running Echoes on your local network;
° Announce to everyone, groups of people you configure, or individuals;
° Reply to the sender of the last received announcement'
° Set keyboard shortcuts for sending and replying;
° Resend last sent announcement without re-recording it;
° Replay last received announcement in case you missed it.
