Pioneer Electronics is one of the first aftermarket manufacturers to support Apple CarPlay with the official release of a compatible firmware update for five 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receivers, as well as the introduction of the CarPlay-compatible fourth generation AppRadio (SPH-DA120).
According to Apple, CarPlay is the “smarter, safer and more fun way” to use an iPhone in your car. It gives iPhone users a way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages with just a word or a touch. The security flaw, known in the media as "Shellshock," was discovered last week. Uncovered by security researchers, the exploit in the bash command shell in OS X and Linux could be used to deploy malicious code.

Apple releases iOS 8.0.1 -- but beware
Apple has released iOS 8.0.1, an update that brings several bug fixes to iOS 8, which was released last week. However, you need to be careful if you upgrade.
The upgrade fixes an issue with HealthKit that prevented apps that support HealthKit from being allowed in the Apple App Store. According to Apple, iOS 8.0.1 also:
° Addresses an issue where 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode;
° Fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library;
° Improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus;
° Fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages;
° Better support of Ask To Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases;
° Fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups;
° Fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari.

4talk increases shared file size limits up to 1GB
4talk (http://bit.ly/1tYXYjo), a cloud communication platform that enables users to interact and share files while syncing them between devices, has increased shared file size limits up to 1GB.
The improvement is currently available on Mac OS X and Windows platforms. However, the folks at 4talk say they're working on support for mobile platforms.
"There are tons of file sharing services and by all means you can share files in messengers, but there are so many problems," says 4talk CEO Sergey Kravtsov. "You have file size limits or you cannot send some kind of files. Plus, if you send it with some service, you cannot get your file on other platforms and devices. We have thrown all these limits out of the window; our users have the right to send big files and have them stored in the cloud."

Ten new have been added to the free Halloween Fonts Collection from MacAppware (http://www.macappware.com). This brings the total number of fonts to 30.
All are in OpenType font format with a commercial use license. International character support isn't standard for every font but is available for many of them.

Typinator for Mac OS X adds new built-in functions
Ergonis Software (http://www.ergonis.com) has released Typinator 6.2, the latest version of its tool for auto-typing text and auto-correcting typos systemwide across all Mac OS X applications. The upgrade adds new built-in functions (Count, List, Any, Index).
With an inclusion mechanism, text expansions can execute external scripts and include their results in the expansion. Typinator supports scripts written in in many different languages like AppleScript, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, and arbitrary shell scripting languages.
Typinator requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later. Mac OS X 10.7 or higher is recommended.
Typinator can be purchased on the Ergonis Software web site for approximately US$32 for a single user license. A family pack for installation on up to five computers is $49. The upgrade to Typinator 6.1 is free for anyone who bought a license before Oct. 1, 2013.

JunoPower has announced the HUE Stick portable battery. It packs 2600 mAh of power in an aluminum casing that weighs six ounces.
The HUE Stick can fully charge a completely dead 5 Volt device (including smart phones, tablets, GPS, camera and more) in two to three hours, according to the folks at JunoPower. It's integrated LED-indicator lets users know exactly how much juice in the left in the power bank and when it's time to recharge. The battery’s built-in LED flashlight can be activated with a single touch and protects users from getting lost in the dark.

According to the folks at VisionTek, it can deliver benchmark test-confirmed 356MB/s Read and 338MB/s Write data transfers. It can also be used to power USB devices or charge them without needing an AC adapter. Each port provides 900mA of power.
Sandvox for Mac OS X gets Vimeo support, more
Karelia Software (www.karelia.com) has updated Sandvox, their web creation software for Mac OS X, to version 2.9. The upgrade introduces a new Vimeo object that makes it super easy to display videos hosted on Vimeo.com. Now, for the first time, website creators using Sandvox can simply choose the Vimeo object to embed Vimeo content on a website.
Sandvox 2.9 also improves publishing performance, and now includes direct support for SSL security for FTP and WebDAV. GRID 2 Reloaded Edition drives onto the Mac Sept. 25
Feral Interactive says the racing game GRID 2 Reloaded Edition will be unleashed on the Mac Sept. 25. Developed and published by Codemasters for PC and consoles, it's the successor to GRID.
When released, the game will be available for download from a variety of digital partner sites worldwide including the Feral Store, Steam and the Mac App Store. A Steam account is required to access online multiplayer features.
Here's how the game is described: "GRID 2 Reloaded Edition features ‘World Series Racing’, a disruptive new racing league with big ambitions. Centrify further extends Apple device management to the Cloud
Centrify Corp. (www.centrify.com) — which specializes in unified identify management across data center, cloud and mobile environments — has launched Centrify for Mac 2014.1, a core component of the Centrify User Suite.
With this new release Centrify says it's easing the burden for Mac administrators by giving them additional cloud-based management options while also enhancing its on-premises Active Directory support for the Mac platform. In addition, Centrify has enhanced its mobile device management capabilities to include support for iOS 8.
Centrify says it's working on integrating with Apple's Touch ID system to ensure the right users have unfettered access to the applications and data they need. In addition, Centrify is leveraging iOS 8 extensions to incorporate a login flow for users accessing company resources via Safari.
First weekend iPhone sales top 10 million
Apple says it sold over 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, a new record, just three days after the launch on Sept. 19.
The new smartphones are available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK and will be available in more than 20 additional countries on Sept. 26. The new iPhones will be available in 115 countries by the end of the year.
"Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release. "We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible."
