[NPL] THE BLOCK 2.1
Marc Mennigmann releases THE BLOCK 2.1
Iserlohn, Germany -- November 01, 1998 -- Marc Mennigmann today announced
the release of version 2.1 of THE BLOCK, a popular password security
application for Macintosh computers.
What is THE BLOCK?
==================
THE BLOCK is a powerful password protection system for Macintosh computers.
Unlike other password protection systems, it will not accept real
passwords. To log in to a computer protected by THE BLOCK you need to go
through a two-step process. First you need to type a Password Key, which is
a key combination similar to the Finder's Copy or Paste shortcuts
[command+c] or [command+v]. The second step is to click with the mouse on
the shutdown button on the on-screen dialog or, depending on the
preferences you set, to press the "esc" key on your keyboard.
A big part of THE BLOCK's security comes from the illusion that a real
password is needed. If intruders are not aware of how THE BLOCK works, they
will always choose the wrong approach...

Subject: [ANN] The Ultimate Macintosh Random-Number Generator
Just a brief note to let those interested know that source code is

The C++ class, URandomLib, was described in the October, 1998 issue of

generating the random output is coded in optimized assembly language

official URandomLib homepage and contains a link to the MacTech ftp site.
The underlying PRNG algorithm, known as "Ultra", was published, and
rigorously tested, by Marsaglia and co-workers at Florida State Univ. This

[NPL] alt.comp.lang.applescript
From: phenix@interpath.com (John Moreno)
Subject: alt.comp.lang.applescript has been created
After waiting a couple of weeks for discussion of the creation of the group
alt.comp.lang.applescript, I have sent the newgroup message so it will
hopefully be available soon (my ISP [interpath] is currently carrying it).
To help get the group going I'd suggest that when responding to applescript
request that they be cross-posted to alt.comp.lang.applescript.

[NPL] HTML Elements Compendium
The Compendium of HTML Elements/htmlcompendium.org
Press Release regarding our update to revision 7.
October 26, 1998, Oxford-on-Rideau, Canada
I am please to present the 7th revision of the Compendium of HTML
Elements. Revision 7 contains many refinements and much expanded
information that will be of interest to the web authoring community.
New Format
Revision 7 uses a completely new format that retains the hierarchy
of previous releases but with faster access times and easier and faster
movement throughout the site. We have moved from tables-based formatting to
Cascading Style Sheets, for the most part, Level 2.
Downloadable Fonts
We are now using the Bitstream downloadable fonts to compliment the
move to CSS2. The texts can be read faster. As well, the downloadable fonts
aid in establishing the hierarchy that is so necessary with large amounts
of information like this. A big plus is the demonstration of downloadable
fonts themselves. The entire process is described in full....

[NPL] Traffic Report 1.0 b30
Traffic Report Release Notes B30
Version: 1.0.b30
Date: Monday, October 26, 1998
Author: Brian Lusby
New Features in This Version
TR now lets you specify which referrers you'd like included in the reports.
You can include the internals, externals, or both. This just affects the
Referrer reports and doesn't exclude a referrer's entire log entry (as is
the case when using a filter). Settings for this addition are in the Log
Prefs. Referrers that contain the home domain you specify can be included
(for reporting on internal referrers) or excluded (for reporting on
external referrers). For example, to exclude www.apple.com and
www2.apple.com you'd specify your home domain as apple.com and both would
be excluded.
The Referer Stats report now includes visit counts and visits' average
length. Want to know how many visits you've gotten from Yahoo!, Excite or
any other referrer category you've established? This report will tell you.
The Day-by-Day Stats, Primary Domain and Secondary Domain...

[NPL] MiniCalendar 2.1
MiniCalendar 2.1 PR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Catara(tm) Software Releases MiniCalendar 2.1
Contact: Steven Marcotte catara@idir.net
Lawrence, KS October 24, 1998 Catara(tm) Software today announced the
release of MiniCalendar 2.1, an update of their popular calendar program.
What is MiniCalendar 2.1?
MiniCalendar is a small and elegant system calendar. Its main goal is to
provide the user with a basic calendar for any month between January 1582
and December 29940.
MiniCalendar is not designed to replace full function date books, rather it
is designed to complement such programs. Programs such as Claris Organizer
or Now Up-To-Date excel at managing appointments and dates, but are clumsy
when it comes to looking up what day your birthday is going to fall on next
year. MiniCalendar fills this niche nicely. Since MiniCalendar is small and
easy enough to use, you will want to leave it running so you will always
have access to a calendar.
As you'd expect from Catara, MiniCalendar is robust,...

[MD1] Raven 1.5
From: jesjones@halcyon.com (Jesse Jones)
Subject: [ANN] Raven 1.5
I'm happy to announce that Raven 1.5 is available. You can find it at
(http://www.halcyon.com/www3/jesjones/Raven/Raven.html).
Raven is a free C++ application framework similar to PowerPlant and MacApp.
The changes in 1.5 are as follows:
Known Bugs:
* Stack crawl doesn't have symbol names if virtual memory is on.
* DTS has confirmed a bug in the 1.0.1 Appearance Extension: if a window's
procID is kWindowModalDialogProc or kWindowAlertProc the window is not
actually modal (ie the user can switch out of the app).
* When using native floating windows the NavServices dialogs don't activate
until they're clicked (OS 8.5f2). Note that this is reproducible with the
Nav Services sample code.
+ CustomGetFile seems to hang if InitFloatingWindows is called (OS 8.5f2).
+ The SIOUX window won't drag if a floater is visible (this is a SIOUX bug).
General Notes:
+ There's now a Raven web page at:

[MD1] AppMaker #11 Beta
AppMaker #11 Beta Released
Grantham, NH - October 22, 1998 - Bowers Development has released Beta
modules for the upcoming AppMaker #11. All AppMaker users with a current
subscription are invited to try the new modules. Information and a request
form are at http://members.aol.com/bowersdev/.
More than a GUI Builder
The theme in AppMaker #11 is to do more of the application logic for you.
Code that you would have had to write by hand, AppMaker now generates for
you. You design your user interface and design the data items, then connect
them. AppMaker generates the skeleton, the sinews, and much of the muscle
of the application logic in addition to generating resources and source
code for the user interface.
Major new features
* Supports array data - in particular an array of pointers to other data
objects. An array signals when its content is changed.
* Generates file I/O to read/write any data Members that are specified as
"persistent." This includes array Members.
* Adds a custom...
