[NPL] PowerMail 2.2

PRESS RELEASE - CTM ships PowerMail 2.2

October 30th, 1998 - CTM announces the immediate release of PowerMail
2.2, its flagship e-mail client for Mac OS. PowerMail uses the same
high-speed search engine as Apple's new Sherlock to search through its
mail databases, offers access to multiple POP3 and IMAP4 mail accounts
and supports e-mail correspondence in over 71 simple and complex
languages, including English, Japanese, Swedish and French.

The new 2.2 release brings 9 new features and 23 enhancements over
version 2.1, and has already been made available free of charge to
current owners.

PowerMail was the runner-up of the 1998 Apple Design Awards in the
category "Best Apple technology adoption", and Mac Central calls it "a
viable Emailer replacement". The product can be purchased online at US$
49, with substantial site-license discounts for corporate and education
use. A free demo version can be downloaded from http://www.ctmdev.com

--------------------------------
NEW FEATURES IN POWERMAIL 2.2
--------------------------------

1. [NEW] Coloring of quoted text when replying (with different colors up
to 5 levels deep); colors can be assigned from the preferences dialog
2. [NEW] Implemented direct import from Outlook Express 4 mailboxes;
there is now an Outlook Express menu option in the "Import Messages"
dialog
3. [NEW] PowerMail now remembers the status (expanded/contracted) of
local folders after quitting
4. [NEW] The AppleScripts folder is now located in PowerMail additions
instead of PowerMail files; this will let one share scripts regardless
wof whch PowerMail database is being used, and will also enable us to
install a few example scripts in the AppleScript menu out-of-the-box.
5. [NEW] The default encodings now also apply to unencoded subjects and
senders (useful for Korean and Japanese messages sent by older
versions of Netscape Navigator/Communicator)
6. [NEW][IMAP]: Ability to view remote messages without downloading their
enclosures
7. [NEW][IMAP]: drag-and-drop copy of a selection of IMAP messages and
enclosures to a local folder
8. [NEW][IMAP]: server-side IMAP searches in the currently selected
mailbox
9. [NEW][IMAP]: creation of server-side IMAP folders occurs as children
of the currently selected mailbox

--------------------------------
BUG FIXES IN POWERMAIL 2.2
--------------------------------

1. [fixed] We can now import mailboxes previously exported in Eudora
format by BareBones MailSmith, even if these had large encoded
enclosures in them
2. [fixed] Importing Eudora mailboxes could crash if a subject was longer
than 255 characters
3. [fixed] Rare error -116 one receiving messages with empty subjects and
enclosures under Mac OS 8.5
4. [fixed] We can now import mailboxes previously exported in Eudora
format by BareBones MailSmith, even if these had large encoded
enclosures in them
5. [fixed]: We now prevent spell-checking on a received messages which
has not been modified; this would cause a crash since the spell
checker would want to modify something that was read-only
6. [fixed]: Whenever PowerMail is being told to quit by an AppleEvent (ie
Shut Down, etc...) it now waits until whatever dialog is dismissed to
actually quit
7. [fixed]: It is now possible to use the tokens (i.e. (standard e-mail
date and time) (sender name) ((sender e-mail address))) more than once
in a an attribution line
8. [fixed]: The toolbar buttons would not hilight correctly on Mac OS 8.5
9. [fixed]: Messages replied to from the main browser (as opposed to
opened in a message window) not have the "in-reply-to" field correctly
set
10. [fixed]: In "Encodings", changed the script name and fixed an encoding
for Central Europe and
11. [fixed]: We now have better error handling in enclosure decoding
12. [fixed]: Improved the handling of enclosure file names and file types
13. [fixed]: Occasional uuencode decoding corruption (this only occured
with enclosures from certain applications)
14. [fixed]: The Appledouble invisible flag ignored (thanks, Peter Lovell)
15. [fixed]: We now decode text parts when handled as enclosures
16. [fixed][IMAP]: Hard crash after attempting to rename or move an IMAP
mailbox; in addition, renaming a folder no longer causes the entire
hierarchy to be contracted
17. [fixed][IMAP]: Deleting an IMAP folder could crash
18. [fixed][IMAP]: We no longer let someone try to rename INBOX - this has
always been an illegal IMAP operation
19. [fixed][IMAP]: When changing an IMAP mailbox name its hierarchy is now
preserved.
20. [fixed][IMAP]: When a local folder is dropped on top of an IMAP
folder, PowerMail warns that its contents will be copied, not the
folder itself. (last-minute note: this had to be commented out due to
another quirk)
21. [fixed][IMAP]: The "Warn when inaccessible mailboxes are added"
checkbox in IMAP options has been expanded in functionality but has
not been renamed yet. It now lets you generally enable or disable
non-fatal error messages reported by the server which can sometimes
become tedious (one of them is with AppleShare IP 6.1 seed 1 where a
BAD null command is sent after APPEND is completed)
22. [fixed][IMAP]: Also in AppleShare IP, no notification (EXISTS/RECENT)
is sent after an APPEND. We deal with this, even though it looks like
a bug since the University of Washington server does send this
command.
23. [fixed][IMAP]: bug causing the body of an imap message not to be saved
and displayed correctly was fixed

Reminder: What is PowerMail
--------------------------------

PowerMail is an e-mail client for MacOS that combines powerful features
with a clear, intuitive, and easy-to-use interface. PowerMail supports
multiple e-mail accounts, both POP and IMAP, has advanced indexing and
searching capabilities, and supports multiple languages and script
systems. This message is being sent to you because you communicated with
us, reported a bug or otherwise expressed interest about PowerMail in the
past. (if you wish to stop receiving such occasional information, please
send a message to: requests@ctmdev.com with the subject: unsubscribe
powermail-announce)

PowerMail is being developed by a dedicated team of five Macintosh
software developers who are determined to meet the needs of demanding
users of electronic mail. We think that an e-mail client can be powerful
and full-featured and still have an elegant interface and be easy to use.
We have implemented the features commonly found in leading e-mail
applications (multiple accounts, filtering, encoding, enclosure
management) while offering a unique focus on the following areas:

Mobile usage:
* PowerMail's IMAP4 functionality lets users display and manipulate the
contents of server-based mailboxes without having to download all
messages. It is a convenient, standards-based successor to LAN e-mail
systems such as QuickMail or Microsoft/Quarterdeck/StarNine mail.

* For users of the widespread POP3 services, we have added the ability to
minimize PPP connection durations by converting and indexing messages
once off line, in addition to deferring periodic mail checking until a
PPP connection is active.

Find by content:
* By including support for Apple's Information Access Toolkit, PowerMail
offers unparalleled speed in searching archived mail message content as
well as relevance-ranked searches.

* PowerMail's ability to import and export messages--notably from Eudora
mailboxes--makes it easy to start enjoying the benefits of find-by-content
using your existing mail archives. If you use Claris Emailer, we
recommend the Export-Eudora script available from
ftp://ftp.fogcity.com/pub/Emailer/2.0/ImportExport3.1.hqx to create files
which PowerMail can import.

World-ready:
* Because the Internet connects users of many languages, we have focused
on meeting the needs of simple and complex languages alike, and allow for
messages to be written and read in Japanese, Korean, Chinese (simplified
and traditional), Arabic, Persian, Cyrillic (Bulgarian, Russian, and
Ukrainian), Hindi, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, and Nepali text
(using any of three Indian writing systems: Devanagari, Gujarati, and
Gurmukhi) in addition to all accented Western languages (English, French,
German, Italian, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese,
Danish and others).

WHAT YOU NEED TO RUN POWERMAIL
PowerMail requires a Power Macintosh or 68K Macintosh running System
7.5.5 or later with Open Transport. PowerMail requires the Text Encoding
Converter version 1.3.1 or later and Internet Config (these are installed
by PowerMail).

In addition, you need either a network or dial-up TCP/IP connection to
the internet and an internet e-mail account, either POP3 (Post Office
Protocol) or IMAP4 (Internet Mail Access Protocol). You will also need
the account information from your network administrator or Internet
Service Provider in order to configure PowerMail.
