Public policy research group accuses Al Gore of conflict of...
The National Center for Public Policy Research (http://www.nationalcenter.org/) says former Vice President and current member of Apple's Board of Directors, Al Gore, is facing a conflict of interest in his duties in the latter position. The Center, which submitted a shareholder proposal warning Appleabout potential conflicts of interest involving Gore in February, is now calling attention to what it says is a new potential conflict of interest directly involving Gore. It has recently been revealed that Apple's massive new North Carolina data center will be powered by fuel cell technology supplied by Bloom Energy, a company whose investors include the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, where Gore is a partner.

The 4.8-megawatt power facility is reported to be the biggest fuel cell facility ever built by a non-utility company. Fuel cell technology uses hydrogen or natural gas to generate electricity by an electro-chemical process that does not involve...

Apple being investigated in the UK for non-payment of corporate...
Apple is being investigated by the UK taxman over the payment or non-payment of corporation tax (the corporate income tax to Americans), reports "Forbes" (http://macte.ch/JknAR). Supposedly, Apple paid just £10m in British tax in 2010 despite clocking up sales here worth an estimated £6bn. Accounts for Apple’s three main British subsidiaries show the Californian group paid just £10.3m in corporation tax in the year to September 25, 2010, according to reports. "Forbes" says Apple’s British turnover is thought to account for a tenth of worldwide sales, which hit $100bn (£63bn) in its last financial year. The US giant avoids paying higher taxes by using foreign subsidiaries, such as in Ireland and the British Virgin Islands.

Analyst: next gen iPhone to be 'extraordinary'
In a note to clients -- as reported by "Barron's" (http://macte.ch/WaU4a) -- Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White, who rates Apple shares as "buy" with an US$1,001 price target, says "the buzz around the new iPhone 5 is growing in Asia and speculation around the timing of the launch has begun." He says the inclusion of a 4G wireless connection in what he expects to be a new, “sleek” iPhone frame with a 4-inch screen should lead to a December quarter debut that "could be extraordinary, dwarfing previous launches and driving the stock closer to our $1,001 price target." White thinks component production will start in June, but a formal introduction of the next gen Apple iPhone likely won't happen until August or September.

China leads world in iOS, Android activations
The Flurry research group (http://www.flurry.com) has quantified China’s meteoric adoption of iOS and Android applications. While China ranked 10th in application sessions at the beginning of 2011, it finished the year in second place, trailing only the United States.  With its large population and rapidly emerging middle class, adoption of apps vaulted China into the position of world’s second largest app economy.  In additional analysis, Flurry also determined that China has the most market upside, based on calculating those in China who can afford smartphones versus the current installed base. Flurry's latest report reveals that, for the first time ever, China now leads in new smart device adoption (iOS and Android smartphones and tablets). For the study, the research group used its entire data set, tracking more than 1 billion anonymous, aggregated application sessions per day. More than 60,000 companies use Flurry Analytics across more than 160,000 applications. In January 2011...

BTIG analyst downgrades Apple from 'buy' to '...
BTIF analyst Walter Piecyk tells clients in a note that he's downgraded Apple stock from "buy" to "neutral." Why? According to "Business Insider" (http://macte.ch/mSasr), here are the key points behind the Piecky's reasoning: ° Apple will have another blowout quarter. Revenue will be US$40 billion for the second quarter vs. current estimates of $36 billion. But that's where the good news ends. ° 2012 will be the year that the wireless carriers fight back against having their margins constantly squeezed. Specifically, they say that new new policies (especially from AT&T) will stunt the pace of product upgrades, depriving Apple of sales. ° So, in the third quarter, there will be a sequential decline in iPhone sales, and revenue will come in $1 billion below the current consensus.

iPad on the verge of becoming catch-all word for tablet
Apple is on the verge of doing what few others have: change the English language, according to "The Daily Record" (http://macte.ch/aAzZM). If you want to buy a tablet computer, there’s a good chance there’s only one name you’ll remember -- the iPad, the article adds. "For the vast majority, the idea of a tablet is really captured by the idea of an iPad," says Josh Davis, a manager at Abt Electronics in Chicago, told "The Daily Record." "They gave birth to the whole category and brought it to life." This is both good and bad. "Companies spend millions to create a brand," notes "The Daily Record." "Then, they spend millions more on marketing that can have the unintended consequence of making those names so popular that they become shorthand for similar products."

Court unlikely to uphold Apple request to block Samsung products
A U.S. appeals court showed few signs today that it's willing to uphold a request by Apple to immediately block the sale of some Samsung smartphones and tablets, according to "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/qSkGF). The court heard an argument about whether a federal judge acted properly in December when she ruled that Apple failed to provide enough evidence to support an injunction of Samsung's Galaxy line of products. This is merely the latest round in the ongoing legal brouhaha between the two companies. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. A week ago a German court dismissed two cases brought by Apple and Samsung against each other as part of the ongoing legal battle.

Hon Hai/Foxconn plans pay wage increases for employees
Apple's supplier Hon Hai Precision Industry -- better known in the U.S. as Foxconn -- plans to raise wages for its employees in Taiwan "significantly" from July, to attract and retain talent for its expanding business, a company spokesman reportedly told "Total Telecom" (http://macte.ch/yEBKr).

Hon Hai, which manufactures iPhones and iPads, has been facing pressure to improve wages and working conditions for employees following several employee suicides at the company's facility in Shenzen in 2010 and an explosion at a plant in Chengdu in 2011 that killed four workers. Following the incidents, Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, increased salaries and outfitted worker dormitories with safety nets. Hon Hai is still deciding on the size of the salary increase in Taiwan, spokesman Simon Hsing told "Total Telecom." The company employs more than one million people in China, over 400,000 of them in Shenzhen.

Forty-six percent of corporations issuing Macs to employees
Apple is enjoying the fruits of the growing popularity of Macs in the workplace with about 46% of corporations now issuing Macs to employees, according to the "CIO Journal" (http://macte.ch/czcDT). Business sales of Macs grew 50.9% at the end of 2011, according to analyst Charlie Wolf with Needham & Compan. Business sales accounted for 34.9% of year-over-year total shipment growth for the Mac platform. It used to be cost-prohibitive to run Macs in the enterprise, and that equation changed recently with the MacBook Air, Peter Yared, chief technical officer at CBS Interactive, told "CIO Journal." The MacBook Air is slightly more expensive than an enterprise-ready PC. But with docking stations and the solid state drives that Yared would have ordered for each employee, the cost is comparable, Yared told "CIO Journal." In October 2011 CBS Interactive began replacing its employee PCs with Macs.Yared is buying about 100-150 Macs per quarter to replace older PCs and to give to new...

iTV? No, the iPanel
In a note to clients -- as reported by "Barron's (http://macte.ch/fPdoA) -- Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek raised his price target on Apple from US$699 to $800 due to "increased confidence" the company will introduce a television set. He's raised his fiscal 2013 (for the year ending September) estimate to $214 billion, well above the Street consensus of $187 billion. Interestingly, Misek has decided that an Apple-branded HDTV will be dubbed the "iPanel" instead of the much-rumored "iTV" moniker. Why? It's "far more than a TV," serving as a display, gaming center, media hub, computer, home automator and more. He also notes that the iTV name is owned by an U.K. company of the same name, which has global rights. What's more, Misek says that the "iPanel" name is owned by Crestron, "which discontinued its product line and is focusing more on Apple products to integrate in their system."

Apple sued again for misleading adds -- Siri-ously
Another day, another lawsuit. A Regina (Canada) law firm has launched a proposed class action lawsuit over what it claims are "misleading messages" about Siri, the voice activated personal assistant, reports the "Ottawa Ciizen" (http://macte.ch/7JIp3). The suit, filed in Regina by Merchant Law Group, notes a press release introducing Siri lauded it as "an intelligent assistant," the article adds. After buying an iPhone 4S, Regina resident Catlin Hendriks -- - the only named plaintiff at this point -- claims Siri didn't work as advertised. This is the third such lawsuit; the two others are based in the U.S. Earlier this week a new suit was filed in a U.S. District Court by a California resident named David Jones, who argues that Apple oversells Siri's abilities in advertising and TV commercials, reports the "L.A. Apple not ready to settle in alleged ebook price-fixing
Apple and two major publishing houses, Macmilian and Penguin -- are reluctant to settle the ebook price-fixing investigations from the US and Europe, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/PN3jj). However, the "situation remains fluid" and those positions could change as the Justice Department edges closer to filing an antitrust suit, the article adds. The Department has mulled suing Apple and the publishers for conspiring to raise the price of electronic books. According to the "WSJ," the case centers on Apple's move to change the way that publishers charged for e-books as it prepared to introduce its first iPad in 2010. Traditionally, publishers sold books to retailers for roughly half of the recommended cover price. Under that "wholesale model," booksellers were then free to offer those books to customers for less than the cover price if they wished.
