Analyst: Mac sales up 5% year-over-year in March quarter
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- latest U.S. sales data from NPD suggests Apple's Mac sales were up "just" 5% year-over-year during the March quarter, a number lower than some have expected. Investors generally expect Apple sold 4.3 million units during the three-month period, representing a14 % year-over-year increase. Munster says the lower-than-some-expected sales are because Apple hasn't released any major updates for its MacBook Pro and iMac product lines in over a year -- two lines that account for 50% of Mac sales. Munster expects Apple will report Mac sales in the range of 4.1 million to 4.4 million, representing 9% to 17% year-over-year growth, respectively. However, he expects sales to pick up in the next few months as Apple revs the MacBook Pro, iMac and MacBook Air lines with Intel's new Ivy Bridge processors.

LuckyCat malware apparently prowls on the Mac
Costin Raiu from Kaspersky Lab said in a SecureList blog post (http://macte.ch/gkytk) says that last week the security software company of a possible link between a Mac OS X backdoor trojan and an APT attack known as LuckyCat. The IP address of the C&C to which this bot connects (199.192.152.*) was also used in other Windows malware samples during 2011, "which made us believe we were looking at the same entity behind these attacks," he says. "We think the above facts show a direct connection between the SabPub and Luckycat APT attacks," Raiu writes. "We are pretty sure the SabPub backdoor was created as far back as February 2012 and was distributed via spear-phishing emails." His theory is that the malware payload was delivered through Word documents. Malware detection and virus tools aren't effective for LuckyCat yet, thought this situation should change soon.

Lawsuit against iOS in-app gaming purchases gets a green light
Another day, another lawsuit. Apple is being sued by parents who claim the company is unfairly profiting from in-app payments in games aimed at children, reports the "BBC" (http://macte.ch/XlntG). Many games on iOS devices are free, but offer paid in-app upgrades and purchases. The group of parents, led by attorney Garen Meguerian, argue that it's too easy for children to run up big bills without their parents' permission. Apple had called for the case to be dismissed, pointing out that in-app purchasing can now be disabled, notes the "BBC." However, US District Judge Edward Davila said the hearing could now go ahead.

Apple, ACCC fail to settle iPad disagreement
Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission have failed to settle a dispute over the naming of the new 4G LTE-capable iPad, reports "The Sydney Morning Herald" (http://macte.ch/m3n4U). The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission took Apple to court last month after it failed to respond to its concerns that the name of its new tablet -- the iPad Wifi + 4G -- would mislead Australian consumers. The ACCC says the new iPad does work at fast speeds, but isn't compatible with any Australian 4G networks.  Apple agreed to contact all customers and advise them the tablet did not work on Australian 4G networks and to offer refunds. However, the ACCC apparently wants Apple to change the name/description of the product. The next phase of the case will be determined at a directions hearing this afternoon before Justice Mordecai Bromberg of the Federal Court in Melbourne, notes the "Sydney Morning Herald."

Analyst: Apple considered investing in Sharp
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White says Apple initially considered investing in Sharp's LCD business for its [rumored] upcoming HDTV, but the company decided to let its Foxconn manufacturing partner have the job instead. However, Foxconn bought a 10% stake in Sharp last month to help boost the company's financially strapped LCD business. As part of the deal Foxconn will utilize Sharp's LCD factory that opened in Sakai in 2009. Reports out of the Far East suggest that Foxconn's partnership with Sharp will give both companies an opportunity to produce IGZO displays for the rumored "iTV." By teaming up, it is believed that both Foxconn and sharp have a better chance of receiving orders from Apple, says White.

Apple criticized for not backing IPv6 Internet Protocol
Apple came under fire for back-pedaling on its support for IPv6, the next-generation Internet Protocol at this week's North American IPv6 Summit, a gathering of experts held in Denver, reports "Network World" (http://macte.ch/sQdC9). Presenters were annoyed that the latest version of Apple's AirPort Utility, version 6.0, is no longer compatible with IPv6. The previous version, 5.6, offered IPv6 service by default. Comcast is urging its subscribers that are interested in using IPv6 not to upgrade to AirPort Utility Version 6.0 if they use Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") operating system because of incompatibilities with IPv6. "Apple has taken the ability to seamlessly support IPv6 away from the AirPort Utility," John Brzozowski, chief architect for IPv6 and distinguished engineer with Comcast, told "Network World." "It's a little concerning. We hoped to see more IPv6 support, not less, among [customer premises equipment] vendors." IPv6 is needed because IPv4 is running out of addresses to...

Say hello to Helo for OS X, iOS
Developer Johnny Gentry has introduced Helo 1.0 for Mac OS X and iOS. It's an arcade game where players control a helicopter and must pick up stranded hikers. Here's how the game is described: "Featuring retro-style, 8-bit graphics and animation, the game is deceptively challenging. Players must avoid birds, compensate for winds, and master the delicate up/down and left/right control system to rescue minute animated hikers, stranded on small platforms in mid-air. Helo (pronounced Hee' low) is tilt controlled on iOS. "With blocky, aliased graphics and animation, Helo takes the player back to the early years of video games, when designers struggled to construct games that would run with limited memory and processing power. The comparative crudeness of those games was tolerated by players, because there was nothing better and because the gameplay was challenging and entertaining. Helo is an homage to those early efforts that established quality of gameplay as the most important factor...

Apple responds to ebook price fixing charges
In response to the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit against Apple and several book publishers for collaborating on ebook pricing, Apple says it's actually been working to break Amazon’s control over market. In a statement (http://macte.ch/Y5Dz0) to AllThingsD, Apple spokesman Tom Neunayr had this to say: "The DOJ’s accusation of collusion against Apple is simply not true. The launch of the iBookstore in 2010 fostered innovation and competition, breaking Amazon’s monopolistic grip on the publishing industry. Since then customers have benefited from eBooks that are more interactive and engaging. Just as we’ve allowed developers to set prices on the App Store, publishers set prices on the iBookstore." The Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, Hachette SA, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin and Simon & Schuster in New York district court this week, claiming collusion over eBook pricing. Apple and Macmillan, which have refused to engage in...

Apple pays couple for damage due to flaming iPod nano
Apple has paid a couple in Tokyo, Japan, ¥600,000 (approx. $7,400) for medical fees and pain and suffering when the first-generation iPod nano spontaneously burst into flames, causing burns to the hand that took more than a month to completely heal, according to "Cult of Mac" (http://macte.ch/7D58J). Report: mobile device shipments to double over next five years
A new report from analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that shipments of mobile computing devices -- including tablets, ultrabooks and other notebooks -- will more than double over the next five years. Driving this growth will be tablets and devices from Intel’s new ultrabook category, with combined shipments of these devices making up 73% of the total market by that time, according to the research group. The "Ultrabooks & Mobile Computing" report finds that the consumerisation of IT is making the traditional notebook seem like a museum piece, as thin, lightweight touchscreen tablets like Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab step out of the movie screen and into the home. Notebook vendors are flocking to Intel’s new category, one which will provide a tablet user experience in a notebook form-factor, according to Juniper Research. At the heart of the user experience are technologies like SSD (Solid State Drives) which, along with other hardware and software enhancements,...

Judge: Apple can intervene in Lodsys against app developers
A judge has ruled that Apple can intervene in a lawsuit against various app developers, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/x7HJX). Judge Rodney Gilstrap concluded that Apple was entitled to intervene, and in any event, a permissive intervention (one that the court can allow in its discretion) was also an option, the article adds. Lodsys has sued some iOS developers for using in-app purchasing systems that it claims violates patents it owns. The patent holding firm targeted small iOS developers with notices of patent infringement for providing in-app purchase and/or Apple App Store purchase links within their apps. In 2011 Apple's legal department came to the defense of iOS app developers with a letter to Lodsys regarding its patent dispute with app developers. In the letter to Lodsys, Apple said: "Apple is undisputedly licensed to these patents and the App Makers are protected by that license. Thus the technology that is targeted in your notice letters is technology that Apple...

Apple releases Java for OS X 2012-003
Apple just released Java for OS X 2012-003, an update to the Java implementation in OS X. You can obtain it via the Software Updates component of the Mac OS X Systems Preferences app. This Java security update removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware. This update also configures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets. Users may re-enable automatic execution of Java applets using the Java Preferences application. If the Java web plug-in detects that no applets have been run for an extended period of time it will again disable Java applets. Java for OS X Lion 2012-003 delivers Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_31 and supersedes all previous versions of Java for OS X Lion. Apple says the update is recommended for all Mac users with Java installed.
