Analyst: Apple will become first trillion dollar company in 2013
In a note to clients -- as reported by "The Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal" (http://macte.ch/ykE1c) -- Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White raised his estimates after the company's big earnings this week, predicting it will become the first trillion-dollar company sometime next year. "Apple's performance once again demonstrated how quickly Apple fever is spreading around the world and this trend continues to drive meaningful upside in the company’s financial results," the analyst says, adding that "negative vibes" that drove down the company's stock this month will be replaced by fears of missing its next big up-swing. White also bases his prediction on his belief that the company will roll out an Apple-branded HDDTV, an "iPad mini," the iPhone 5 and a new relationship with China Mobile within the year.

Grewal in San Jose, California, has ruled that Samsung has violated court orders in a patent-infringement case by failing to produce documents referencing Apple features and designs, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/h4Yg1). "The scale of Samsung’s production and the burden placed on it by the compressed case schedule and the numerous claims at issue are not in doubt," Grewal wrote. "That burden, however, does not negate Samsung’s obligation to comply with no fewer than two court orders specifying the production of documents that reference Apple’s products." In its lawsuit, Apple claims that Samsung’s 4G smartphone and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer, among other products, infringe its patents. ITC judge says Apple violates a Motorola patent
International Trade Commission Judge Thomas Pender has decided that Apple's products violate one Motorola Mobility patent related to Wi-Fi technology, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/d8j7a). The judge's findings are still subject to review by the six members of the ITC, but the ruling "puts Motorola one step closer to potentially blocking the importation of Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad," the article adds. The ITC is scheduled to complete the investigation by Aug. 23. If it deems that an import ban is warranted, that decision is subject to review by both President Barack Obama and an appeals court that specializes in patent law, notes "Bloomberg." All this is part of an ongoing battle between the two companies. Apple has previously alleged that Motorola infringes 24 of its patents (21 of them with Android-based phones, the remaining three with set-top boxes and DVRs), while Motorola previously asserted 18 patents against a variety of Apple products (mostly but not...

CLSA: don't look for decline in carrier iPhone subsidies...
According to a new analysis from CLSA -- as reported by "AllThingsD" (http://macte.ch/FpE8i), there's little possibility of a decline in carrier subsidies for Apple’s iPhone at least not for the next 18 to 24 months. The research group thinks the structure of Apple’s carrier agreements will prevent this from occurring. "We believe these are multiyear agreements which tend to stipulate subsidy policies up front," CLSA analyst Avi Silver says. "For the major carriers, we believe these agreements have most favored nation clauses so any offering from Apple to one carrier would have to be offered to the other. During the length of these multiyear agreements, we believe U.S. carriers would need permission from Apple to alter subsidy levels." The CLSA analysis comes on the heel of a note from BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyk to clients that he thinks Apple’s carrier partners are tired of offering such high subsidies on the iPhone. "Subsidies by post-paid wireless operators have fueled...

Sophos: one in five Macs harbor malware
New research released by security software company, Sophos (http://www.sophos.com), reports "a disturbingly high level of malware" on Mac computers -- with both Windows and Mac threats being discovered. Sophos experts analyzed a snapshot of 100,000 Mac computers running its free anti-virus software, and discovered that one in five machines was found to be carrying one or more instances of Windows malware. Although Windows malware on Macs won't cause symptoms (unless users also run Windows on their computer), it can still be spread to other computers. Additionally, Sophos's analysis shows that 2.7% (one in 36) of Macs were found to be carrying Mac OS X malware. "Some Mac users may be relieved that they are seven times more likely to have Windows viruses, spyware and Trojans on their Macs than Mac OS X-specific malware, but Mac malware is surprisingly commonly encountered," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. "Mac users need a wake-up call about the growing...

Chinese court reportedly sides with Proview over Apple in iPad...
"The Globe and Mail" reports (http://macte.ch/0Ohwz) that Proview Technology, which is battling Apple in a Chinese court over the iPad trademark, is the rightful owner of that mark, a senior official with the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) said. “According to the ... provisions of the China Trademark Law, currently Shenzhen Proview is the legal registrant of the iPad trademark,” Fu Shuangjian, a deputy director of SAIC, was quoted as saying at a news conference in Beijing. Monday the IDG News Service reported (http://macte.ch/92ZvH) that Apple and Proview Technology, a Chinese company, have started talks to try and resolve an ongoing legal dispute over the iPad trademark. Ma Dongxiao, a lawyer representing the Chinese company Proview, said on Friday the talks were happening, but declined to offer details. The ongoing legal brouhaha is still being deliberated by the Higher People's Court of Guangdong Province, but earlier this week, the court recommended that...

Apple close to settling ebook price fixing case in Europe?
Apple has offered to settle the row over ebook price fixing in Europe, but it’s still holding out in the US, reports "Macworld UK" (http://macte.ch/lus2c), According to reports, European Union competition commissioner Joaquín Almunia has said Apple and all the publishers, other than Penguin, have agreed to settle, at least in Europe. Apple has been sued in Europe, the U.S. and Canada for collaborating with publishers to "fix" ebook prices. The brouhaha centers on Apple's move to change the way that publishers charged for e-books as it prepared to introduce its first iPad in 2010. Traditionally, publishers sold books to retailers for roughly half of the recommended cover price. Under that "wholesale model," booksellers were then free to offer those books to customers for less than the cover price if they wished. Apple suggested moving to an "agency model," under which the publishers would set the price of the book and Apple would take a 30% cut. However, Apple also insisted that...

MacMate launched to replace Apple's MobileMe
MacAce, a Mac specialist ISP, has launched a new service dubbed MacMate service. It's designed as a replacement for Apple's MobileMe, which is being replaced by iCloud. MacMate offers web hosting, cloud storage and email in one package. Its hosting capability allows multiple domains and one-click publishing from iWeb as well as drag-and-drop or FTP access to the webspace. The MacMate disk sits on the users desktop just like a real disk. MacAce CEO Gary Hall says it's estimated that up to 250,000 Mac-users worldwide use the web hosting part of MobileMe and are anxious to find an alternative host for their site. MacMate addresses the growing complaints and calls from Mac fans to keep iWeb, Apple's popular one-click WYSIWYG web design program, in development and to continue their ability to create and publish a website within minutes, he adds. iWeb will continue to work on Mac OS X, even on the upcoming Mountain Lion; what's more, Apple hasn't said they're abandoning the app; they just...

Symantec introduces Norton Identify Safe
When given a list of potentially challenging activities, 40%of people surveyed by Norton by Symantec says remembering all of their passwords is among the top three most difficult tasks -- more than those who selected balancing their checkbook. So Symantec has released Norton Identity Safe, a free, cloud-enabled service where consumers can store and synchronize all of their passwords across Macs, PCs, iOS devices such as iPhone and iPad, and Android devices.   "Too often, people turn to bad password habits -- using the same easy password for all of their accounts or writing down a list of passwords and taping it to the computer," says Marian Merritt, Norton Internet Safety Advocate. "Even though passwords have been around for a long time, the sheer number we all have to remember is constantly increasing.  Norton Identity Safe is a simple, secure way to keep track of your personal information, no matter where you go or what device you use."   To begin using Norton Identity Safe,...
