Analyst: iTV will have limited appeal due to high price tag
In a note to clients -- as reported by "Macworld UK" (http://macte.ch/X78zp) -- TG Industry Investment Research analyst Joseph Fersedi says Apple may indeed build its own HDTV -- the rumored "iTV" -- unlikely to have any impact because Apple will make it too expensive.
He thinks Apple will go after the high-end segment of the TV market, but that's a small market. “While it makes sense to think that Apple will go high-end in the TV business (as it has in computers, phones and tablets), our analysis suggests that Apple may need to go more mass market within a couple of years of launching a premium-priced TV product," Fersedi wrote.
ITG asked consumers in the U.S. whether they were interested in buying an iTV. Thirty-four percent of respondents with a household income greater than US$50,000 a year that said they were likely to buy a TV set in the next 12 months said they'd buy an iTV based on Apple's brand alone. However, among lower-income families, 44 % said they'd be interested in an...

Digitimes Research: new iPad didn't hurt notebook sales in...
The notebook industry, which was in a downturn, seems to be in recovery. The launch of the new iPad in late March didn't create an impact on notebook shipments, and the result is an optimistic shipment forecast for notebooks in the future, according to Joanne Chien, senior analyst at Digitimes Research (http://www.digitimes.com).
The research group adds that Apple, which entered into the market of ultra-thin notebooks with its MacBook Air, is also planning to adopt ultra-thin designs for its MacBook Pro product line and is set to start mass producing a 15-inch MacBook Pro in mid-April. Initial monthly shipments will be about 200,000 units, claims DigiTimes. The company will then mass produce a 13-inch model in June with initial monthly shipments of 300,000-400,000 units, the research group adds.

Proview/Apple lawsuit gets the green light to continue
Proview's lawsuit against Apple over the iPad trademark in China will continue unobstructed now that a court has blocked one creditor's attempt to liquidate the company, reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com).
Fubon Insurance had filed multiple requests to have the Shenzhen subsidiary of Proview liquidated without waiting for the former monitor maker to resolve its complaint against Apple. The creditor had said it didn't believe Proview would win enough money from Apple to cover its debts.
In March the Bank of China Ltd. and several other creditors of Proview Technology Shenzhen said (http://macte.ch/noLzO) the "iPad" trademarks belong to them and not to Proview, potentially complicating a fight over the trademark between Proview and Apple.
Major creditors of Proview Electronics, which is challenging Apple's use of the iPad trademark, moved to have the ailing computer monitor maker liquidated. Taiwan-based Fubon Insurance initially sought US$8.68 million in debts and...

Antitrust investigations start against Motorola Mobility
The European Commission has opened two formal antitrust investigations against Motorola Mobility. The opening of proceedings means that the EC will examine the cases as a matter of priority. It doesn't prejudge the outcome of the investigations. Following complaints by Apple and Microsoft, the Commission will investigate, in particular, whether by seeking and enforcing injunctions against Apple's and Microsoft's flagship products such as iPhone, iPad, Windows and Xbox on the basis of patents it had declared essential to produce standard-compliant products, Motorola has failed to honor its commitments made to standard setting organizations.
In these commitments, Motorola engaged to license those standard-essential patents...

Singular Software takes its audio/video sync tech to the cloud
Singular Software has introduced CloudEyes, a cloud-based media synchronization technology that lets producers and contributors share and mine footage for remote video collaborations.
CloudEyes, an online synchronization service based on the same technology that powers the PluralEyes and DualEyes products, automatically syncs audio and video clips for multi-camera and dual-system audio applications. The automatic synchronization technology of CloudEyes is used by producers thousands of times every day to create everything from wedding videos to commercials to indie films, says Singular Software CEO Bruce Sharpe.
Like Singular Software's family of post-production tools, it removes the need for timecode and clappers, and automates the most time-consuming of workflow tasks -- except now, all those production benefits have moved from desktop to cloud, he adds. Research firm: iTV may use CableCARDs
In a note to clients -- as reported by "Deadline" -- Barclays Equity Research says the rumored Apple branded HDTV (the so-called "iTV") will debut in early 2013 and be impressive if not revolutionary.
Barclays sees the iTV as a television set that merges Internet and conventional TV programming enhanced by features including Apple’s Siri and a FaceTime camera and microphone.
"Apple’s eventual television could be so much more than a TV -- including gaming, video communication, content delivery, apps, computing and all the capabilities of the current Apple TV -- that it is really not fair to compare it to products already on the market," the research group says.
An iTV might use CableCARDs to unscramble providers' signals rather than needing a cable or satellite set-top box. This would eliminate access to the operator’s VOD, but Barclays says that consumers won’t mind because they’ll be able to connect to services such as Netflix and Hulu.
CableCARDs are special-use PCMCIA (PC)...
Analyst places $1,001 price target on Apple shares
In an inaugural research note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Topeko Capital Markets analyst Brain White puts an US$1,001 price target on Apple's shares because "the 'Apple story' has a long way to play out over the coming years despite the company's already dominate market position."
The analyst says the next 12-18 months should serve as a "particularly exciting" time. In particular White sees:
° The 1080p Apple TV set-top box as another step toward Apple rolling out its own branded HDTV (whichould could be a $100 billion market opportunity);
° Apple continuing to capitalize on the rise of mobile Internet around the world, especially in China;
° Apple offering "an ever expanding portfolio of innovative products, a growing integrated digital grid, unmatched aesthetics and a brand that is able to touch the soul of consumers of all backgrounds."

ChangeWave: New iPad even more loved than the iPad 2
User satisfaction with the new iPad is even higher than previous iPad ratings from a February 2012 ChangeWave survey (http://www.changewave.com) of more than 200 owners of the latest Apple tablet.
More than four-out-of-five new iPad owners (82%) say they are "very satisfied" with the device, and another 16% say they're "somewhat satisfied," notes the research group. That compares with 74% and 23% for the iPad 2.
ChangeWave says, the Retina display (75%) is what new iPad owners report they like best about the device. Long battery life (22%) comes in a distant second, followed by 4G LTE capability (21%) and the faster processor (20%).
When asked what they dislike most about their new iPad, users cited the cost of the device (26%) and the cost of the wireless data plan (23%) as their two biggest gripes. Two other issues were each cited by 8% of owners -- the iPad's size/weight and its amount of flash memory storage. Additional dislikes mentioned include its integration with other...
Apple modifies European warranty policy
Apple has modified its European warranty policy after being fined $1.2 million by Italian authorities for “misleading” customers. But apparently there's still some confusion and anger.
Previously, and despite EU law, Apple gave customers only one year of warranty. If you wanted another year, you had to pay for AppleCare plan. Italy found that Apple was wrong, and fined the company. Now Apple offers a two-year warranty, even on non-Apple branded items purchased in the company's retail stores.
“When you purchase Apple products, European Union consumer law provides statutory warranty rights in addition to the coverage you receive from the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty and the optional AppleCare Protection Plan,” Apple says on its European websites.
However, according to "ZDNet" (http://macte.ch/9hQWz), says there's a lack of clarity regarding Apple's policy. European consumer law says a repair or replacement can be given if “defects present when customer takes delivery”, while Apple’...
Apple rescheduling retail store staffing practices?
According to "ifoAppleStore" (http://macte.ch/qgwUc) Apple is revising its scheduling practices "that will pressure employees who are already suffering from larger crowds of visitors."
The article says Apple is changing weekend work requirements, and increasing the mandatory minimum hours for part-timers. "The changes seem to have substantial benefits for Apple, but few for its employees, and could result in many resignations from employees who are unable to comply with the new requirements," opines "ifoAppleStore."
Ashton Kutcher reportedly playing Steve Jobs in indie pic
"Variety" (http://macte.ch/0YNRI) reports that Ashton Kutcher is slated to play the late Steve Jobs in the indie pic, "Jobs," which Joshua Michael Stern ("Swing Vote") will direct from a script by Matt Whiteley.
The article says the film will chronicle Jobs from "wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple, where he became one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of our time." Five Star Institute's Mark Hulme is financing and will produce the pic, which is skedded to start production in May while Kutcher is on hiatus from his "Two and a Half Men" CBS series.
"Jobs" is the second movie based on the life of Jobs that's in the works. Sony Pictures is currently developing its own Steve Jobs pic, based on the bestselling book by Walter Isaacson.
