iOS 6 already on 15% of iOS devices
iOS 6 is already on 15% of iOS devices, even though it was only made available Sept. 19, according to Chitika Insights (www.chitika.com), an advertising and analysis firm.
The research firm took a sample of millions of mobile ad impressions coming out of the Chitika Ad network ranging from Sept. 19 to Sept. 20. The growth rate of iOS 6 was then compared to total iOS Web usage using a time series to illustrate the rate of adoption of the new OS.
Pre-release iOS 6 exhibited low levels of usage due to developer activity. Following its release during the afternoon of Sept. 19, adoption levels soared despite high loads on Apple’s servers, according to Chitika Insights. Yet, within 24 hours, iOS 6 adoption had already reached levels above 15%.
"This level of adoption is a significant development and a testament to the vertical product structure Apple dedicated itself to, particularly when compared to Android’s latest operating system (Jelly Bean) which only saw a 1.5% adoption rate...

'iFixIt' tears down the iPhone 5
The "iFixIt" gang has torn down the iPhone 5. You can find the complete teardown at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-5-Teardown/10525/1 .
"Once we got the iPhone 5 on the operating table, the iPhone practically flew apart under our nimble spudgers," says "iFixIt." "Good news for all the phone droppers out there: the front glass/display is the first thing that comes off the iPhone 5! Replacing a cracked front panel is significantly easier than the iPhone 4/4S.
"And the further we delved, the more excited we got — even though we had to remove two pentalobe screws to get inside. The oft-broken and hard to repair home button now sports an integrated metal support bracket that should reduce the chance of failure, and the battery comes out just as easily as in last year's model. Overall, the iPhone 5 received a very solid 7/10 repairability score!"
Here are some highlights of the teardown:

Maps, Passbook in iOS 6 help propel Apple App Store growth
With the addition of the new Maps platform and Passbook app to its iOS 6 operating system, Apple has extended the reach of its smartphone and tablet ecosystem into the real world, helping to drive the company’s app store revenue up by nearly 70% this year.

This means that nearly half of the revenue generated by the App Store in its five-year history will be earned this year alone.
With this strong growth, Apple this year will command about a 65 percent share of the global application store market. The graphic presents annual and cumulative revenue for the Apps Store.

Tablets drive customer satisfaction with traditional computers...
According to a new report by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI)l the personal computer division rated an all time score of 80 out of 100. Could it be partially due to the fact that more folks are buying Macs? Perhaps. But the iPad also plays a part.
As the personal computer market continues to undergo its transformation toward smaller, more mobile computing and away from stationary desktop solutions, customer satisfaction with the PC industry as a whole gains further traction—up 2.6% to an all-time high ACSI score of 80. The improvement over the past year blasts away the industry’s former high point of 78 that was earned in both 2010 and 2011. ACSI measurement of the industry includes customer satisfaction with all types of personal computers: desktops, laptops and tablets.
"The recent stall in demand for desktop computers comes in conjunction with a surge of interest in small, mobile computers; in particular, devices that are ultrathin or lightweight," says Claes Fornell...

Apple's own iOS 6 Maps app seems a bit lost
The Apple iPhone 5 has generally met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. The company's Maps app in iOS 6 ... well, not so much.
Apple has ditched the Google Maps application offered in previous versions of iOS and included its homegrown app. However, the response hasn't been kind. To wit:
° "Unlike the old version, the new Maps app doesn’t include transit directions. Instead, it points users to transit routing applications that they can download from Apple’s App Store. Unfortunately, there are no transit apps right now that are compatible with the newMaps app." -- "CSMonitor" (http://macte.ch/ebiWk)
° "Inaccuracies and misplaced towns and cities in Apple's new map software have provoked anger from users." -- "BBC" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19659736)
° "Search results in both Japanese and English seem severely limited, especially when navigating in the latter. Major Tokyo landmarks and tourist spots can’t be found through search. English speakers won’t be able to find the...
Apple to subpoena Amazon in e-book price fixing brouhaha
Apple wants the Department of Justice to turn over the interviews it conducted with Amazon employees as part of the ebook pricing lawsuit, according to "paidContent" (http://macte.ch/C2JaW).
In an August filing, Apple wrote: "Amazon was the driving force behind the Government’s investigation, and it told a story to the Government that has yet to be scrutinized. Amazon talked with the government repeatedly throughout the investigation, even hosting a two-day meeting at its Seattle headquarters."
Apple’s fight to obtain the interviews came to light as result of court records that show Amazon attempting to quash the subpoena in Seattle federal court, notes "paidContent." The judge in the case will "promptly address the discovery dispute" if the motion is transferred, the article adds.
Apple has been sued in Europe, the U.S. and Canada for collaborating with publishers to "fix" ebook prices. The brouhaha centers on Apple's move to change the way that publishers charged for e-books as it...

Another day, another lawsuit. Unwired Planet, through its Nevada-based subsidiary, Unwired Planet LLC, has filed patent infringement complaints against Apple and Google in the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada. The suits involve ... you guessed it ... patent infringement.
In two separate complaints filed in Reno, Nevada, Unwired Planet -- which calls itself " "the inventor of the mobile Internet" -- charges Apple with infringing 10 of its patents, and charges Google with infringing 10 different patents. Together, the two cases charge infringement of a total of 20 patents related to smart mobile devices, cloud computing, digital content stores, push notification technologies and location-based services such as mapping and advertising.

Samsung adding iPhone 5 to U.S. lawsuits
Samsung plans to add Apple's iPhone 5 to existing patent lawsuits against its U.S. rival, reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/sqgz2).

"Based on information currently available, Samsung expects that the iPhone 5 will infringe the asserted Samsung patents-in-suit in the same way as the other accused iPhone models."
This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.

Stitcher (www.Stitcher.com) -- which specializes in on‐demand news, entertainment, sports and talk radio -- has conducted a nationwide survey and found that 60% of smartphone and tablet owners would cast their presidential vote via mobile app or text message if they could do so without concern for fraud.

"The Hollywood Reporter" (http://macte.ch/jqit3) says that Time Warner Cable is "hard at work at a cloud-based [TV] guide experience" and is open to giving up control of the user interface as it looks to make its service accessible via new devices, including Apple's iPhones and iPads. This is reportedly what president and COO Rob Marcus told an investor conference in New York on Wednesday.
However, this doesn't mean that Time Warner Cable is willing "to give up the customer relationship" as the company is committed to ensuring that people know its TV services are provided by TW Cable and not any device maker or other third party, the article adds. Deal details will depend on the partner and circumstances though, Marcus said at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference in New York.

Apple, four publishers make ebook settlement offer
Apple and four publishers have offered to overhaul pricing models for digital books to allay European Union concerns that they blocked competition, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/Bdi8d).
The publishers won’t limit retailers’ discounts for two years under details of proposals by Apple, CBS Corp.’s Simon & Schuster, News Corp. The European Commission said they first made an offer to settle its investigation in April, notes "Bloomberg."
Facing EU pressure, Apple has promised to terminate so- called agency agreements with the four companies and Pearson, it said in its proposal. Under Apple’s pricing strategy, the iPad maker takes a fixed percentage of e-book prices set by the publishers.

Apple wants $3 billion in damages from Samsung
Apple’s legal representatives will ask U.S. Federal Judge Lucy H. Koh to triple the damages Samsung has been ordered to pay after losing a patent case to US$3 billion in the Sept. 21 judgment as a matter of law (JMOL) hearing in California, reports the "Korea Times" (http://macte.ch/9odsI).
This is the biggest ever damage payment sought in a technology patent dispute, the publication notes, citing unnamed "multiple legal sources." The finding of what legal officials say is "willful infringement" enables Apple to seek triple the damages awarded.
This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.
The iPhone 5 costs about $200 to build
The new iPhone 5 carries a bill of materials (BOM) of US$199 for the low-end model with 16GB of NAND flash memory, according to a preliminary virtual teardown conducted by the IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service (www.isuppli.com).
When the $8 manufacturing cost is added in, the cost to produce the iPhone 5 rises to $207. For the 32GB version of the iPhone 5, the BOM cost increases to $209, while the 64GB version is estimated at $230.
Note that these teardown assessments are preliminary in nature, account only for hardware and manufacturing costs and don't include other expenses such as software, licensing, royalties or other expenditures.
"With the base model carrying a $199 BOM, the iPhone 5’s components are expected to be slightly more expensive compared to the iPhone 4S model," says Andrew Rassweiler, senior principal analyst, teardown services, for IHS. "The low-end iPhone 4S with the same memory density as the base-model iPhone 5 carried a BOM of $188.00, according to a...
