Would you rather break your iPad or have a root canal?
What's more painful than getting a root canal, breaking a bone or getting in a minor car accident? The answer, according to a survey of more than 1,300 iPad owners, is breaking their iPad.
The survey, conducted by online and mobile presentation company, Brainshark (www.brainshark.com) shows that iPad users would find accidentally destroying their iPad more painful than: getting in a minor car accident (40%); having a root canal (32%); breaking their nose (16%); getting fired from their job (10%).
Brainshark's survey, conducted in August, shows just how quickly and deeply entrenched the iPad has become in its users' personal and professional lives. For example, 92% of iPad owners say the device currently supplements their laptop, but more than half (51%) think it will be their primary computing device within the next two years.
With 17 million iPads -- more than double the population of New York City -- sold last quarter alone, the device isn't just part of the technology landscape,...

Wireless Connectivity chipsets revenues to skyrocket
The total market for standards-based wireless connectivity chipsets is expected to exceed $10 billion in 2012, this includes both standalone and combo chipsets that use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC, UWB, and ZigBee, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com)
"The market continues to develop with technologies -- particularly Bluetooth and Wi-Fi -- squaring up for a fight to be the dominant standard," says Peter Cooney, wireless connectivity practice director, ABI Research. "There continues to be a competitive element to the market as standards bodies vie to push their technologies into new markets and others out."
The number of Bluetooth enabled devices shipped per annum will surpass 2 billion in 2012, while Wi-Fi will creep over 1.5 billion; many of these (such as smartphones) will contain both technologies, often integrated onto a combo chipset. 'iFixIt' tears down Apple's new EarPods
"iFixIt" has torn down Apple's new EarPods. You can find the teardown at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple-EarPods-Teardown/10501/1 .
"We didn't assign a repairability score for the EarPods. Unfortunately, products like these earbuds are still of the throw-away kind," says the "iFixIt" gang. "Repair is infeasible because sourcing parts is next to impossible, and it would be a tough sell to convince someone to take apart their EarPods -- they're glued together, and will never be the same once taken apart."
Here's some highlights of what they found:
° Like most speakers, the EarPod speakers consist of a diaphragm/cone, a voice coil, a permanent magnet, and a cabinet. The voice coil is supported by a composite diaphragm made of a paper cone and a polymer surround. This is the first iteration of Apple headphones to use paper cones rather than all plastic.
° Apple had durability in mind with the new EarPods. The new remote design includes larger cable wrapping on both ends to reduce...
Apple shares trade above $700
Apple shares traded above US$700 for the first time on Wall Street Tuesday. The price rose as high as $701.44 in early trade, a day after the firm said it received more than two million orders for its new iPhone 5 in just 24 hours.
The stock later dipped slightly to $699.34. The company's market value based on its stock price has surged above $655 billion, extending Apple's lead as the world's most valuable corporation, notes "Yahoo Finance" (http://macte.ch/YM92L).
ITC to investigate line-up of Apple products
The U.S. International Trade Commission has voted to investigate Apple's lineup of products, including the iPhone, iPad and Macs, in response to a complaint lodged by Google-owned Motorola Mobility, reports "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com).
Motorola says those products violate section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930. The company hopes the ITC will block the importation of Apple's devices that Motorola believes infringe upon its patented inventions, notes "AppleInsider."
The ITC's decision to investigate is not an indication of a future ruling for or against Apple, the article adds. The commission can elect to investigate patent infringement complaints filed by major corporations.
All this is part of an ongoing battle between the two companies. Apple has previously alleged that Motorola infringes 24 of its patents (21 of them with Android-based phones, the remaining three with set-top boxes and DVRs), while Motorola previously asserted 18 patents against a variety of Apple products...

Setup involves no need to open a third party cloud account or pay an additional subscription fee to sync, backup or restore data. Features like "Generate Passw" or "duplicate" passwords for sensitive account information.
"Recent online security breaches highlight the risk of using the same password for multiple websites or simple passwords such as ‘12345’," says Bonnie Boyle, Chief Product Officer, DataViz. "Everyone needs to be diligent about using strong, unique...
Judge nixes Samsung's motion to stop the U.S. Galaxy Tablet...
Judge Lucy Koh on Monday filed an order denying Samsung's motion to dissolve Apple's sales ban against the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and vacated the Sept. 20 hearing at which both parties were scheduled to discuss the matter, reports "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com).
Koh noted that the standing injunction can't be dissolved by the court as the sales ban is currently being under appeal with the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The judge did rule, however, that "under all circumstances, Samsung’s motion raises a substantial issue, and the Court therefore issues such an indicative ruling," notes "AppleInsider."
This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.
Analyst: iPhone 5 to sell eight million units in launch weekend
In a note to clients -- as reported by "MacRumors" (www.macrumors.com) -- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicts that Apple will sell eight million iPhone 5s during the product's launch weekend -- which is the upcoming weekend.
"Given the 2 million pre-orders, we remain confident that Apple can deliver 8 million (range of 6-10 million) iPhones in the launch weekend," he says. "The reason we are confident in the 8 million is two-fold. First, initial 24 hour pre-orders for the iPhone 5 were up 100% y/y from the iPhone 4S. Last year, pre-orders accounted for 25% of total weekend launch unit sales. Assuming the same initial pre-order/retail distribution, the pre-order total would suggest 8 million launch units."
On Monday Apple announced that pre-orders of its iPhone 5 topped two million in just 24 hours. That's more than double the previous record of one million held by iPhone 4S.

The Leica M is the first M rangefinder to feature Live View and 1080p HD video recording. It's also the first to use a CMOS sensor instead of a CCD one.

In July, Android held 42% of ad impressions compared to 58% for Apple. This comes on the heal of the news that Samsung sold more devices than Apple and other manufacturers in Q2 2012.
If history is any guide, the new iPhone 5 could end the trend. Velti reported that in the two months following the introduction of iPhone 4S, Android ad share plummeted 5%. Velti also said it expects the iPhone 5 will account for more than 25% of total iOS mobile impressions in just six months.
"This is the first time we’ve seen Android net gains in two consecutive months, and it’s a drastic turnaround from the beginning of the year when Apple continued to soar," says Krishna Subramanian, CMO of Velti. "But we...

Fitch: iPhone 5 to benefit select carriers long term
Fitch Ratings (www.fitchratings.com) -- a global rating agency "dedicated to providing value beyond the rating through independent and prospective credit opinions, research and data" -- believes that while the new device will likely create some short-term margin pressure for U.S. wireless carriers, it could likely lead to greater revenues in the long term.
To be sure, 3Q 2011 EBITDA [earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization] margins for major carriers AT&T and Verizon were 39.9% and 40.6%, respectively. Following introduction of the iPhone 4S in 4Q11, margins declined to 24.7% and 35.0%. While those declines are notable, in 2Q12, both AT&T's and Verizon's margins hit their highest points since 2010, before the smartphone subsidies began taking their toll.
"We believe higher margins puts both companies in good position to weather some near-term pressure," says Fitch Ratings. "However, some carriers may feel additional pressure. Sprint Nextel margins were...

Intel Labs eyes wireless future
In his keynote at the Intel Developer Forum, Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner said, "In the future, if it computes, it connects. From the simplest embedded sensors to the most advanced cloud datacenters, we’re looking at techniques to allow all of them to connect without wires."
Rattner demonstrated a working, all-digital WiFi radio, dubbed a "Moore’s Law Radio." The CTO explained that an all-digital radio follows Moore’s Law by scaling in area and energy efficiency with such digital chip processes as Intel’s latest 22nm tri-gate technology. System-on-chip designs for smartphones and tablet computers would be the most likely spot for the all digital radios to be integrated.
The small size and lower cost of integrated digital radios will enable a host of new applications from wearable devices to "The Internet of Things"where devices such as home appliances with sensors can communicate with each other, exchange data and can be operated remotely, says Rattner.
