Disney CEO loads up on Apple stock
Disney CEO Bob Iger, who is on Apple's Board of Directors, has purchased US$1 million worth of Apple shares, an SEC filing (http://macte.ch/Nhet3) reveals.
What makes it "really interesting," according to "Business Insider" ("Reuters" (http://macte.ch/U9vP0) is that Iger exercised a million options on Disney stock last week, netting $17.9 million. "When an insider, like a board member, buys stock on the open market, it's usually considered a bullish sign," the article adds.
Iger also bought $1 million worth of shares a year ago at prices around $375 a share, shortly after joining Apple's board.
NTSB drops the BlackBerry for the iPhone
The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates plane crashes, has become the latest federal agency to drop its BlackBerry smartphones in favor of iPhones for reliability, reports "U.S.A. Today" (http://macte.ch/FnbOx). It joins agencies such as the Defense Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Transportation Security Administration that have made the switch.
The NTSB, whose investigators respond immediately to plane crashes and other transportation disasters, says it's switching to Apple's iPhone 5 because BlackBerrys "have been failing both at inopportune times and at an unacceptable rate." "The NTSB requires effective, reliable and stable communication capabilities to carry out its primary investigative mission and to ensure employee safety in remote locations," the agency said in a Nov. 13 government filing about its smartphone service to justify the switch, notes "U.S.A. Today."
U.S. kids look forward to an 'iHoliday'
When it comes to devices, kids’ holiday wish lists are simple this year. The most-wanted gifts are predominantly from one company -- Apple. According to a recent Nielsen study (www.nielsen.com), Apple’s popularity leading up to the holiday season continues a trend seen over the last couple of years, with American kids aged 6-12 generally more interested in the latest iOS offerings than other consumer electronics and gaming devices.
Approximately half the children surveyed expressed interest in the full-sized iPad (up from 44% last year), and 36% in the new iPad mini. The iPod touch and iPhone are also coveted devices among these young consumers (36% and 33%, respectively).
Kids are also likely to ask for dedicated gaming hardware this holiday, with 39% excited to own Nintendo’s just-released console offering, Wii U, and 29% indicating they want a device from that company’s portable DS family. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 also proved appealing, with approximately...

Analyst: Apple to sell 4.8 million Macs during the holiday...
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com) -- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says Apple will sell 4.8 million Macs during the holiday quarter. That's down 7% year-over-year.
Munster bases the figures on data from the NPD research group (www.npd.com). The figures suggest Mac sales were down 40% when compared to September. That's a normal seasonal trend as back-to-school sales end, Munster said.
A year ago, Apple set a new record by selling 5.2 million Macs in the December 2011 quarter. That represented a 26% increase from the same period in 2010.

Analyst predicts iTV, iPad mini with Retina display, more for...
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com) -- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says the long-rumored Apple-branded HDTV (the so-called "iTV") will be one of three of four core product launches from the company next year.
He expects Apple to launch a television set in time for the holiday 2013 shopping season with screen sizes between 42 and 55 inches. The price? Between US$1,500 and $2,000.
"We expect the beauty of the design to be a feature, but the most important feature will be the ability to use the TV as the main interface for the living room across multiple devices," Munster says. "We believe the TV will include Siri and FaceTime. The biggest item unlikely to come with the TV will be unbundled channels."
The analyst also expects Apple to unveil an iPad mini with a Retina display in early 2013 and an iPhone 5S in September. What's more, Munster forecasts a revamped Apple TV (the set-top box, not a television set) with a TV app store arriving...

ITC to review Apple, Samsung patent decision
The U.S. International Trade Commission will review a judge's decision which found that Apple did not violate patents owned by Samsung Electronics in making the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/ZI7t5).
An administrative law judge at the ITC had said in a preliminary ruling in September that Apple was innocent of violating the patents. The ITC, which could have opted to simply uphold the judge's decision, said that it would take up the matter. If Apple is found to infringe, its devices can be banned for sale in the United States, notes "Reuters." A final decision is due in January.
In the preliminary ruling in September, ITC Judge Thomas Pender found Samsung in violation of four Apple patents, including intellectual property for touch-screen technology. This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-...

Analyst: iPads to dominate tablet downloads for next five years
In a new report Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com) says the iPad will continue to dominate the tablet market for the next five years, owning 56% in 2017, thanks in part to the introduction of the iPad mini.
What's more, the research group predicts that between 2008 and 2017 paid app downloads will generate more than US$57 billion globally. However, paid apps begin to decline as free apps come to represent more than 91% of all downloads by 2017, notes Strategy Analytics.
As the percentage of free app downloads continues to grow, the average selling price of all downloaded apps (free and paid) will drop to just eight cents for smartphone apps by 2017. The decline in revenue and increase in app store maintenance costs -- including app approval personnel, marketing, and other maintenance costs -- may force app stores to consider new revenue streams or higher revenue splits, says Strategy Analytics.

Together with HP, Apple is a top scorer for policies and practices regarding conflict minerals, but fails in developing a paper procurement policy banning suppliers involved in deforestation and illegal logging.

Samsung has asked a California court to compel Apple to produce a copy of its settlement and patent license agreement with HTC, claiming the document is relevant to its own patent dispute with Apple, reports "PC World" (http://macte.ch/7S5e1).
Apple's willingness to license patents in the suit may undermine its claim of irreparable harm and demonstrate that monetary remedies are adequate, Samsung said in a filing on Friday. On Nov. 12, it was announced that Apple and HTC have reached a global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current lawsuits and a ten-year license agreement. The license extends to current and future patents held by both parties. The terms of the settlement are confidential.

Packard Children’s Hospital providing iPads for young patients
In what could be a first for emergency departments in the Bay Area, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital is announcing that their Pediatric Emergency Department at Stanford Hospital & Clinics now provides an Apple favorite for its patients.
Potentially painful procedures are a little less scary with the addition of iPads in every one of the department’s nine rooms, each loaded with Apps designed in-house to entertain, inform and make an emergency trip to the hospital a whole lot less stressful.
Bernard Dannenberg, MD, director of pediatric emergency medicine at Packard Children’s, said that distracting his patients from the stress of their procedure with the iPad’s movies, music, games and books has a tangible medical benefit.
"When the iPad came out in 2010, it was immediately clear to me," says Dannenberg, who is also the brainchild behind the custom-designed apps. "I believe one iPad is worth 10 milligrams of morphine."

RE:Vision Effects releases RE:Match
RE:Vision Effects has released RE:Match for Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro. It's designed to take intuitive color and texture matching to a whole new level by addressing common problems on multicam and stereo shoots, according to the folks at RE:Vision Effects.
RE:Match is a set of plug-ins to match one view of video or film to another so that it looks as if it was shot with the same camera and settings. It "assumes" that both image sequences are taken roughly at the same location, but perhaps weren't shot at the same time or from the same point-of-view.
For general multicam shoots RE:Match matches, as best it can, one sequence's overall color appearance to match that of another. For stereo pairs, RE:Match can further refine the overall color match by taking into account that the two views are captured at the same time with a relatively small distance between the views.
In addition, the software is able to propagate color changes into areas that are present in only one...
