Alcatel-Lucent vs. Apple/LG trial gets underway
A California court trial involving patent infringement allegations against Apple and LG Electronics began yesterday, with Alcatel-Lucent's Multimedia Patent Trust asserting the two electronics makers violated video compression technology used in a number of devices, notes "AppleInsider" (www.appleinsider.com). The jury trial is being heard by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. Alcatel-Lucent claims that Apple and LG infringed patents for electronic devices including phones and computers, reports "Bloomberg Businessweek" (http://macte.ch/k4yJZ). The trial stems from a 2010 lawsuit by the Paris-based company’s Multimedia Patent Trust accusing Apple and LG Electronics of copying video-compression technology that allows data to be sent more efficiently over communications media, including the Internet and satellites, or stored on DVDs and Blu-ray discs, the article adds. The Alcatle-Lucent SA unit claims its patents are infringed by products including the...

Some Samsung products banned in the Netherlands
A Dutch court has banned sales of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy products that infringe on an Apple patent describing a way to scroll through a photo gallery using a touchscreen, reports "Computerworld" (http://macte.ch/LewMf). The ban only applies to Galaxy products that run Android 2.2.1 and higher that don't use Samsung's proprietary photo gallery software, the Court of The Hague ruled on Wednesday. Samsung already lost a case over the same patent after preliminary proceedings in the Netherlands last year, leading to a sales ban on the then-infringing Galaxy S, SII and Ace, notes "Computerworld." After the verdict, Samsung adjusted its photo gallery software as a work around, and said it stopped delivering infringing products to clients as of the end of August 2011. During the plea hearing in September, Samsung said that, since the last verdict, it uses its own technology in all its products in the Netherlands. Samsung, however failed to provide the court with evidence of the change,...

ABI Research: Apple maintains tablet lead but ....
Apple’s share of the tablet market continued to best all others with 55% unit shipment share in the period, reveals new data from market intelligence firm ABI Research (www.abirsearch.com). Despite maintaining its lead for 10 straight quarters, competition from tablets powered by Google’s Android OS continue to eat away at Apple’s success, according to the research group. Fifty-five percent is the lowest share Apple has ever had since launching the iPad in 2010. "With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year," says Jeff Orr, ABI senior practice director. Following Apple in shipment share this past quarter were Samsung, Amazon, and ASUS. Rather than steal share from Android, ABI Research believes the iPad mini has caused demand for standard...

"Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/bjVrq) says Apple has reportedly fired the manager responsible for the maligned Maps app that debuted with iOS 6. Richard Williamson, who oversaw the mapping team, was fired by Senior Vice President Eddy Cue, the article says, quoting unnamed "people, who asked not to be named because the information wasn’t yet public." What's more, per "Bloomberg," Cue, who took over last month as part of a management shakeup, is seeking advice from outside mapping-technology experts and prodding digital maps provider, TomTom NV, to fix landmark and navigation data it shares with Apple. The Maps brouhaha is also believed to be one of the reasons Scott Forstall is leaving Apple. In October Apple announced that Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iPhone software, will be leaving Apple next year and will serve as an advisor to CEO Tim Cook in the interim. Cue will be taking over his Maps and Siri duties.

In a note to clients -- as reported by "CNNMoney" -- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says the comparison of Apple and Microsoft retail stores at the Mall of America in Minneapolis -- on Black Friday (Nov. 23) found that nearly five times as many items were purchased per hour at the Apple Store. Munster and this team found that: ° There was 47% less foot traffic at the Microsoft store than the Apple store. ° Shoppers bought 17.2 items per hour at the Apple Store and only 3.5 items per hour at the Microsoft Store. ° Shoppers at the Apple Store bought an average of 11 iPads per hour. Despite heavy TV, print and billboard advertising for the new Microsoft Surface tablet, not one was sold sold during the two hours Piper Jaffray spent monitoring that store. ° Sales of Macs and iPads were down from 2012. Munster attributes this primarily to a lack of iPad mini's and the fact that the recently announced iMac upgrade is still unavailable for purchase. Read more at http://tech.fortune.cnn...

You pay $200, but Apple collects ~$600. That carrier covers that $400 gap, and hopes to make the money on your data charges. That system doesn't work in places like India and China. And that's why Apple's market share is tiny in those countries. If it doesn't want to lose access to the next three billion smartphone buyers, it needs to solve this problem."

Barclays Bank buys 8,500 iPads
Barclays Bank has bought 8,500 iPads, reports "The Channel" (http://macte.ch/8h1BU). The buy, made with dealer Insight UK, is believed to be one of the largest roll outs of the iPad or indeed any tablet in the UK finance sector, and signals the growing acceptance of the tab tech in corporate land. A PR person told "The Channel" that the iPads will be used "to assist our branch colleagues to interact with customers, improving the customer experience," "We investigated a number of different tablet options and in this instance, we concluded that iPads were the best solution for their specific needs," she added. "We are now starting to use these across Barclays branches in the UK."

Apple tops computer consumer satisfaction, reliability
"Consumer Reports" has published the results of its annual "Product Reliability Survey," which found that Apple is still coming out on top for consumer satisfaction and reliability. The survey, which reported on computers from Acer, Apple, Dell, eMachines, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba, resulted in a 78% consumer satisfaction score for Apple. Dell and Lenovo tied at 59%, while Acer, Asus, eMachines, HP, Gateway and Toshiba all scoring between 56% and 54%, as noted by "Macworld UK" (http://macte.ch/LAkQj). When asked about tech support, CR said that Apple had solved 75% of Mac user problems, while the nearest competitor, Dell, solved 61%. Apple scored significantly better than competitors in the desktop computer reliability computers, with an iMac repair rate of 8% (lower is better). The closest three competitors were HP, which got a rating of 10% Dell 11% and Gateway 13%. As for laptops, Apple still got the best reliability score, but by a much lower margin than with the...

Mac Data Recovery Guru revved to version 2.0
Mac Data Recovery Guru 2.0 launches today, bringing advanced file recovery. Not only can Mac Data Recovery Guru resurrect deleted files, it can find files lost to faulty drives, even drives suffering from the "click of death." The new interface lets users browse their deleted files, and recover them by file type. Simply click on the lost file and it will show a preview of the contents, and click recover to save it. The only thing that can stop Data Recovery Guru 2.0 is if the file has been overwritten, or if secure delete has been used. Mac Data Recovery Guru 2.0 benefits from speed enhancements, thanks to newly optimized code.Enhanced threading means you can carry on working while the software scans your disk. Mac Data Recovery Guru will work on drives with failing motors or the click of death. The software simultaneously provides a surface scan and a bad sector count (if appropriate). Mac Data Recovery Guru also offers greater device support. Any media -- including flash drives,...

Samsung to see details of the HTC-Apple settlement
A U.S. judge has ordered Apple Inc to disclose to Samsung details of a legal settlement the iPhone maker reached with HTC Corp, including terms of a 10-year patents licensing agreement, reports "Reuters." The court on Wednesday ordered Apple to produce a full copy of the settlement agreement "without delay," subject to an Attorneys-Eyes-Only designation. Earlier this week Samsung asked a California court to compel Apple to produce a copy of its settlement and patent license agreement with HTC, claiming the document is relevant to its own patent dispute with Apple. Apple's willingness to license patents in the suit may undermine its claim of irreparable harm and demonstrate that monetary remedies are adequate, Samsung said in a filing on Friday. On Nov. 12, it was announced that Apple and HTC have reached a global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current lawsuits and a ten-year license agreement. The license extends to current and future patents held by both parties. The...

Analyst: iOS is the 'new Windows'
In a note to clients -- as reported by "Barron's" (http://macte.ch/epv2W) -- UBS Securities analyst Steve Milunovich says Apple's iOS is the "new Windows" (he means that as a compliment). He says the Cupertino-based company is "winning in personal computing." “Apple is gaining as the ratio of total notebooks to iPads plus MacBooks peaked at over 30x in 2006 and is now just 1.6x," Milunovich says. "Not only could iPad maintain half the tablet market, but MacBooks might steal a significant number of Windows PC users.” The analyst thinks Microsoft is late to the game with its Surface tablet computer and Windows 8 for other manufacturers’ tablets. He thinks the company will struggle to make inroads against Apple’s “first-mover” advantage in the category.

Tablets look to surpass notebook sales on Black Friday
This year’s Black Friday -- that's today -- is expected to be the catalyst for tablets to pass notebook shipments for the first time in North America, a trend which NPD DisplaySearch (www.displaysearchblog.com/) expects to continue for the foreseeable future. The research group’s fourth quarter North American tablet shipment forecast is 21.5 million units, far exceeding the 14.6 million notebooks and mini-notes that are expected to ship in the same period. Starting in 2013 in North America, tablet shipments are expected to exceed notebook shipments on an annual basis for the first time; 80 million tablets versus 63.8 million notebooks. On a worldwide basis, tablet shipments aren’t expected to out-ship notebooks until 2015, when 275.9 million tablets are projected to ship, as compared to 270 million notebooks. Several factors are enabling the North American tablet-friendly environment, says DisplaySearch. First, over 70% of U.S. households have computers, putting the U.S. among the...

Tokens is new promo code developing tool for the Mac
Padraig Kennedy and Oisin Prendiville have announced Tokens for Mac, a new tool to help iOS and Mac developers generate, share, and track promo codes. Developers use App Store promo codes to provide advance copies of their apps to media contacts or to give away copies of their apps in promotions. This has always been a notoriously awkward task, so Kennedy and Prendiville say they've streamlined the entire process with this sleek new app. Tokens is free for developers to use with one of their apps. The full version (US$29) allows them to generate, share and track promo codes for all their apps across all their developer accounts. A corporate license ($199) allows all members of one organization to use Tokens. The developers are offering a $100 discount on this price until Nov. 27. For more info go to http://usetokens.com .
