Intel says light beams can replace electronic signals for future...
Intel (http://www.intel.com) has announced an advance in the quest to use light beams to replace the use of electrons to carry data in and around computers. The company has developed a research prototype representing the world's first silicon-based optical data connection with integrated lasers. The link can move data over longer distances and many times faster than today's copper technology; up to 50GB of data per second. This is the equivalent of an entire HD movie being transmitted each second. Today computer components are connected to each other using copper cables or traces on circuit boards. Due to the signal degradation that comes with using metals such as copper to transmit data, these cables have a limited maximum length. This limits the design of computers, forcing processors, memory and other components to be placed just inches from each other. Intel says its new research achievement is another step toward replacing these connections with extremely thin and light optical...

Apple accused of ebook censorship
Apple has been accused of censoring the iPad book chart after four pornographic titles mysteriously disappeared from the bestseller list, according to a "Telegraph" report (http://macosg.me/2/lo). "Blonde and Wet, the Complete Story" was ranked first on the iPad in a top 10 that included three other erotic novellas Monday morning. But all four titles disappeared simultaneously and had been replaced with less risqué books, such as Peter Mandelson’s autobiography, by the afternoon, notes the "Telegraph." Book chart analysts told the publication it was unlikely that all the erotic titles could have dropped out of the list at the same moment without being deliberately removed. Of course, it's not the first time that Apple has faced accusations of censorship. The company embarked on a “great porn purge” in February, ridding its iPhone App Store of all “overtly sexual content," notes the "Telegraph."

Apple sued over iPad overheating
Another day, another lawsuit. Apple is being sued over claims that its iPad easily overheats, then suddenly switches itself off, reports "Computerworld" (http://macosg.me/2/ln). In a complaint filed with an Oakland, Calif. federal court last Friday, three plaintiffs accused Apple of everything from fraud and deceptive advertising to violations of California's consumer protection and unfair business practices laws by making, marketing and selling allegedly defective tablets, the article adds. Jacob Balthazar, Claudia Keller and John Browning claim they were duped into buying a defective device by Apple's claim that "reading on iPad is just like reading a book." "The iPad does not live up to the reasonable consumer's expectations created by Apple insofar as the iPad overheats so quickly under common weather conditions that it does not function for prolonged use outdoors, or in many other warm conditions," the complaint read. According to the class complaint, the iPad unexpectedly shuts...

Canalys: Apple now among top five PC vendors worldwide
Counting the iPad as a computer (and why not? it runs a specialized version of Mac OS X) Canalys (http://www.canalys.com) says Apple is now among the top five global personal computer vendors. According to a new report by the research group, Apple rates in the top five, following the iPad’s capture of approximately 6% of the portable computer segment during the second quarter of 2010. Yep, Canalys counts the iPad as a portable computer. “Apart from the ‘Apple effect,’ the iPad owes its success to a lack of advancement in other portable computing segments, such as netbooks,” Chris Jones, a Canalys principal analyst, said in a statement to "eWeek" (http://macosg.me/2/lm). "To capture share moving forward, PC makers will have to take the netbook to the next level or go after new customer segments with their own pads.” -- Dennis Sellers

Apple told to deal with mis-priced online items in Taiwan
Apple was threatened Monday with a fine if it didn't act on a dispute in which thousands of visitors to its online store in Taiwan tried to buy computers that were wrongly priced at massive discounts, reports "AFP" (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100726/ts_alt_afp/taiwanuscomputercompanya...). The Taipei city government said Apple had mis-priced two models Friday afternoon, with one on sale for a little over 40% of what it should have been. Apple corrected the prices hours later but by that time more than 200,000 units had been ordered. "AFP" says Apple hasn't said if it would deliver the products on the misquoted prices. After an initial investigation, the city government's Law and Regulation Commission issued an ultimatum to the company, the article adds. "The city government has tried to reach Apple since Friday afternoon but has not yet received any response from it over the more than 30 consumer complaints," Yeh Ching-yuan, chief of the commission, said in a statement.

New government rules okays iPhone jailbreaking
Owners of the iPhone will be able to legally unlock their devices so they can run software applications that haven't been approved by Apple, according to new government rules announced Monday. The "Associated Press" reports (http://macosg.me/2/lk) that the decision to allow the practice commonly known as "jailbreaking" is one of a handful of new exemptions from a 1998 federal law that prohibits people from bypassing technical measures that companies put on their products to prevent unauthorized uses. The Library of Congress, which oversees the Copyright Office, reviews and authorizes exemptions every three years to ensure that the law does not prevent certain non-infringing uses of copyright-protected material. The new government rules, however, won't stop Apple from continuing its practice of disabling jailbroken phones with software upgrades, notes the "AP." That means owners of such phones might not be able to take advantage of software improvements, and they still run the risk of...

Tablet computers such as the iPad may allow the news industry a "re-set" and to start charging for content after years of giving it away for free, News Corp. chief digital officer Jon Miller said Friday, He added that it was too early to make any judgements about the experiment of News Corp.'s The Times with a paid website but charging online readers was "an idea whose time has come," according to an "AFP" report (http://macosg.me/2/l9). "A year ago, we were pretty out front with the idea that content has value," Miller told an audience of top technology and media executives at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colorado. Apple a finalist for 'Tech Brand of the Year' by T3
Apple has been named a finalist as "Tech Brand of the Year" and "Retailer of the Year" by "T3 Magazine" (http://awards.t3.com/) in its annual Gadget Awards. The company also racked up several other nominations. About Apple, "T3" had this to say: "Originally known for its sleek, Jonathan Ive-designed Mac computers, Apple has shamed the collective mobile industry with its sudden iPhone dominance, and the launch of the iPad has seen a whole new front open. "As every other manufacturer scrambles to launch a tablet PC too, Apple has shown just how visionary it's design and marketing departments still are. "The closed Apple app ecosystem has a Marmite flavour to it, but the simplicity of use has seen millions flock to it, and created brand power that all others must be studying with interest. With the iPhone 4 launch interest already reaching near hysteria, it's certain that Apple will continue to be one of the top brands of the year." The Gadget Awards also see the following Apple products...
