VanDyke Software launches beta version of SecureCRT for Mac OS X

Three trends evolving over several years drove VanDyke's development of SecureCRT for Mac OS X, says Jeff P. Van Dyke, president and founder of VanDyke Software. According to a survey commissioned by the company and executed by Amplitude Research, network administrators ranked "securing remote access" their top priority for four years running (since 2006). Meanwhile, in 2008, Yankee Group released findings that 80% of senior IT execs surveyed had Macs in their organization, increasing from 47% in 2006. Additionally, since 2005, inquiries from network administrators about a secure terminal emulator for Macs had doubled each year....

iPhone 4 approved for sale in South Korea
South Korea's telecommunications regulator said Tuesday it has given Apple approval to start the sale of its latest smartphone, the iPhone 4 in the country, reports the "Wall Street Journal" (http://macosg.me/2/n0).
KT Corp., the country's biggest telecom operator, which has an exclusive contract to offer iPhones in South Korea, said it may be as much as two months before the company can offer the device to its customers. The government's approval is just a regular procedure and it normally takes about one or two months to talk about business matters before launching, according to the "Journal."
Apple cloud-based music plans may be modest in scope
Eight months after its acquisition of Lala.com, Apple is telling executives at the four top labels that if Apple offers any cloud-music features within the next few months, they will likely be "modest in scope" and not include the kind of functionality that Apple outlined in meetings with the labels, such as storing users' music on its servers, sources told "CNET" (http://macosg.me/2/my).
They added that Apple still hasn't negotiated the kind of licensing deals it would need to distribute music from the cloud, the article adds. Not surprisingly, an Apple spokesman declined to comment.
Apple bought Lala last September. Lala offered "the first and only free fully licensed service to instantly provide anywhere web access to an existing music library such as iTunes." Apple's goal is probably to allow Apple to implement a new iTunes feature that would allow users to stream their purchased media content remotely. In fact, rumors of such a service surfaced earlier this year.
Purportedly,...
Apple still warning iPhone users against jailbreaking
Despite last week's ruling that jailbreaking the iPhone is legal, Apple is still warning consumers that doing so is a violation of the company's terms of service and that it reserves the right to terminate service to jailbreakers, notes "Information Week" (http://macosg.me/2/mz).
"Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks the OS," Apple says in a bulletin on its support forum. "It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of the iOS is a violation of the Phone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software."
The note was published last month, prior to the Library of Congress' ruling that jailbreaking is not a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and is therefore legal. But the fact that the warning remains on Apple's support site indicates the company does not believe the ruling supercedes the terms of the iPhone EULA.

Counting the iPad, Apple is number three among portable computer...
If you count the iPad as a notebook (and why shouldn't you since many consider it a netbook replacement?), Apple is now the number three computer vendor for portables, passing Asus, Lenova, Toshiba and, yes, Dell.

When including the iPad as part of the notebook market, Apple moved ahead of Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell in terms of global unit share. Viewed this way, Apple goes from being number seven in the worldwide portable computer market to number three, trailing only Hewlett Packard and Acer.
