Is the iPad starting to cannibalize Mac sales?
Is the iPad cannibalizing the Mac? All indications -- mainly increasing Mac sales atop skyrocketing iPad sales -- have said "no," but Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty thinks that could be changing. In a report to clients issued Monday --as reported by "Fortune" (http://macosg.me/2/q1) -- Huberty notes that the most recent sales trends for the broader computer market were mixed. Consumer sales decelerated to 3% year over year from 6% in June and 8% in May. On the other hand, sales to business, however, rose 39% year over year, allowing overall computer sales growth to hold steady at 11%. Huberty says that Mac sales were up 14% year over year in July -- better than both June (11%) and the overall computer market (also 11%). However, July's 14% growth is down from the Mac's previous three-month average of roughly 25%. So Huberty thinks that ""iPad momentum is likely contributing to the moderation of both broader PC and Mac unit growth." That seems like a bit of a stretch to the...

Analysts comment on slow rollout of iPad competitors
Sarah Rotman Epps, consumer product strategy analyst for Forrester Research, says the lack of viable tablet operating systems is one of the biggest reasons for the slow rollout of iPad competitors, according to a "Wireless Week" report (http://macosg.me/2/pz). “iOS is unique in that it scales down to smartphones and up to tablets, but there’s no other OS that’s uniquely suited to tablets,” she says, adding that the latest release of Android, which makes it slightly more tablet-friendly, just came out for developers within the past few weeks. However, while lack of operating systems in the game may be part of the problem, Jeff Orr of ABI Research told "Wireless Week" he thinks it’s more than that. A recession, combined with "Apple’s bucking of the traditional rollout schedule, left many prospective tablet makers in a holding pattern," he says.  The second reason Orr cites for a lack of tablets is Apple managed to throw everyone off with its unorthodox launch and ship cycle for the iPad...

The blog asked educators what is the one new tech tool they are most looking forward to taking into the classroom with them this fall. It could be hardware or software, a new tool, or just one that's new to their class. "The iPad and Twitter tied for the number of votes in our back-to-school survey," says "ReadWriteWeb." "But if you combine those teachers who listed the iPad with those who voted for tablets, along with the shout-out for the 15 netbook mini-lab, then the educators who responded are most excited about bringing mobile hardware in the classroom. Law firm claims false iPad advertising continues
Apple's advertising of its iPad tablet "as an outside computing device" is "unlawful," according to Scott Cole & Associates, APC, law firm. The firm has already filed a lawsuit against Apple in San Francisco on July 23. The suit alleges that Apple engaged in a marketing campaign that promised functionality of the iPad outdoors and/or in warm conditions indoors, yet the computer routinely shuts down quickly in such situations. “Apple claims the iPad can be used in the sun, in your car, and in warm climates up to 95 degrees,” says Scott Cole, the principal attorney for the plaintiffs. But he claims that “numerous reports, going back months now, explain that the device shuts down in temperatures as low as the mid-70s." Since launching the iPad in April, Apple has advertised the product as suitable for warm environment use, including as an outdoor e-reader, an over-the-stove cooking aid and a vehicle interactive mapping tool. These are usages that are "unrealistic, if not outright...

Analyst predicts Apple-branded HDTVs within 2-4 years
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told investors in a note that Apple plans to launch a connected, full-fledged HDTV in the next 2-4 years, something he has said before. As reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com), Munster agrees with recent rumors that the existing Apple TV set top box will be renamed the iTV, but feels this will only be a "stepping stone" to the eventual flat panel living room TV. The analyst thinks Apple's upcoming data center in North Carolina will be part of this process by serving as a hub for a cloud-based iTunes service that would allow users to stream their catalog of movies and TV shows. Munster believes the upcoming Apple TV update will add an app store, allowing users to download applications to run on the device as you can now do for the iPhone, iPod touch adn iPad. He also sees the product having a lower price and less internal storage, as more content is streamed without a need to save it on the device. Last week "endgadget" (ttp://...

iAds off to a bumpy start?
Apple is facing some early challenges in its iAd mobile advertising foray, with some ad campaigns experiencing delays as agencies attempt to learn the new system amid Apple's tight control over the creative process, ad executives have told the "Wall Street Journal" (http://macosg.me/2/pg). Since launching its iAd mobile advertising service on July 1, Apple has been slow to roll it out, the article adds. Of the 17 launch partners Apple named for iAds, only Unilever PLC and Nissan Co. had iAd campaigns for much of July. Of the remaining 17, Citigroup Inc., Walt Disney Co. and J.C. Penney have since launched iAd campaigns and other companies are planning iAd efforts. The "Journal" says that part of the reason some marketers are experiencing delays in getting their iAds to market is that Apple has kept tight control on the creative aspects of ad-making, something advertisers aren't used to, according to several ad executives involved with creating iAds. That has made the creation of the...

Recent rumors of the iPhone availability on Verizon or another carrier may also be impacting the number of upgrades seen for the iPhone 4, according to Morpace, a market research and consulting firm. Nearly all 34% of AT&T iPhone owners who haven't yet upgraded to the iPhone 4 say they are waiting for the iPhone to become available through another mobile carrier before upgrading. The impact on...
