Analyst: Microsoft shares because of Mac competition to Windows...
Wow, how's this for a change? Shares of Microsoft edged lower Wednesday after Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry downgraded the software giant in part due to increased competition from Macs to Windows systems, notes the "Seattle PI" (http://www.seattlepi.com/business/1310ap_us_microsoft_mover.html).
The analyst told investors he doesn't expect the Big M to see any upside to his estimates for the next 12 to 18 months. Chowdhry says that, increasingly, companies are giving their employees a choice to either use Macs or PCs -- and, increasingly, employees are choosing Macs over Windows. What's, Chowdhry said 70% of college freshman are entering school with Macs, up about 10 to 15% a year ago.
Apple to buy Chinese ISP, mobile game developer?
SinoCast Daily Business Beat (http://macosg.me/2/nl) is reporting that Apple is close to purchasing Handseeing Information Technology, a mobile Internet service provider and a mobile game developer in China, for as much as US$150 billion.
Apple's plan to take over the Chinese company underscores its mounting interests in China's potentially huge mobile Internet sector, which has been basically ignored by it for a long time, the article adds. If Apple is interested in the company, it's probably for its online gaming technologies.
But that's a big "if." As "MacRumors" (http://www.macrumors.com), there's no way Apple would pay $150 billion for Handsetting.
iOS, Android pulling away in smartphone 'two-horse'...
ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) expects mobile application downloads from Apple's iOS and the Android to account for 78% of all application downloads in 2010, with iOS (the iPhone’s operating system) taking the lion’s share of 52% of all applications.
The numbers are driven by availability, variety and novelty in both the Android market and the Apple App Store, which is currently unmatched by any other smartphone platform, says the research group. In addition, the sale of Android phones has taken off in 2010, with over 160,000 activations being reported daily.
"The Apple App Store’s days of being the only game in town are over, although the store will continue to be the biggest player in the market,” says wireless research analyst Bhavya Khanna. “However, downloads from other platforms, such as Blackberry’s App Store and Nokia’s Ovi Store remain sluggish, hampered by a lack of variety and fragmentation among both manufacturers’ many devices.”

Release of the iPad in China gets a bit closer
iPad has received a safety certification mark from Chinese regulators, which means the Apple tablet moves a bit closer to be being released in the country.
Apple has made no announcement about the iPad being sold in China at this time. However, the company appears to be preparing it for an entrance into the Chinese market, says "PC World" (http://macosg.me/2/ni). On Monday, the device was given the China Compulsory Certification by the China Quality Certification Center.
By receiving the certification, the iPad has cleared a major government hurdle to allow the product to be exported and sold to the Chinese market. But, as "PC World" notes, the device will likely need the approval of China's Telecommunications Equipment and Certification Center.
Apple retail stores successful in luring Windows users to the...
Apple's retail stores, boosted by strong demand for iPads and Macs, are helping the tech giant intensify its assault on Microsoft, according to "TheStreet" (http://macosg.me/2/nh).
In a note to clients, Charlie Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Company, says that, that during the June quarter, Windows users purchased half of the 677,000 Macs sold in the stores. This represented over 20% of the estimated number of Windows users who switched to a Mac during the quarter, he says.
Windows users purchased half of the 606,000 Macs sold in the stores during Apple's prior quarter and Needham estimates that, since 2004, more than 18 million Windows users have switched to a Mac. Apparently, Apple stores have played a key role in this effort.
"One of Apple's initial reasons for opening Apple stores was to spotlight the Mac, which had virtually no retail visibility," Wolf told "TheStreet." "With an installed base that has more than doubled in the past five years, the Mac has gone mainstream with...
Incoming UCI medical students to receive iPads
Traditionally, first-year medical students are awarded white coats to signify their entry into the medical community. But at an Aug. 6 ceremony, each member of the UC Irvine School of Medicine’s incoming class of 2014 will find an iPad pre-loaded with everything necessary for the first year of course work in their coat pocket.
As part of its new iMedEd Initiative, the medical school has developed a comprehensive, iPad-based curriculum, reinventing how medicine is taught in the 21st century and becoming the first in the nation to employ a completely digital, interactive learning environment for entering students, says Dr. Ralph V. Clayman, dean of the UCI School of Medicine.
"It is our firm belief that a digitally based curriculum will be the wave of the future, and UCI seeks to be a leader in the innovative presentation of information to students," he adds.
According to Dr. Warren Wiechmann, the school’s director of instructional technologies, the iMedEd Initiative calls for...
Survey: iPhone 4 owners tell what they really think about their...
The iPhone 4 launched in late June and was initially heralded as one of the most successful product releases in Apple’s history. But within days the firestorm over reception and antenna issues unleashed an exceptional degree of critical commentary.
Despite this controversy, one of the biggest unknowns has been what actual iPhone 4 owners really think about their new smart phones. To find out, a July ChangeWave survey (http://www.changewave.com) has taken an in-depth look at the reactions and opinions of 213 Apple iPhone 4 owners.
The initial satisfaction ratings for the iPhone 4 show a high degree of customer approval -- with 72% of owners saying they’re "Very Satisfied" and 21% "Somewhat Satisfied" with their new phone. Despite these good scores, the initial iPhone 4 ratings aren’t quite as extraordinary as the early iPhone 3GS satisfaction numbers seen in our August 2009 survey.
The issue of dropped calls
Historically, the ChangeWave surveys have focused on the issue of dropped...

European Commission chooses iPhone, HTC over the Blackberry
The European Commission has opted for the iPhone and HTC handsets over the BlackBerry to roll out to its employees, reports "CNET" (http://macosg.me/2/ne).
The search for a new smartphone began in 2008 when the Commission, the European Union's executive arm, was deploying a new synchronization tool, prompting it to evaluate different devices on the market, including BlackBerrys. The EC has been using PDAs made by Q-Tek (later HTC) since 2003.
"Following this evaluation, the HTC and the iPhones emerged as the most suitable platforms for voice/mail-centric mobile devices. As a result, the Commission currently supports these two platforms," spokesman for the EC wrote in an e-mail statement sent to "CNET."
Wired.com thinks FTC eyeing Apple for antitrust violations
The Federal Trade Commission has nearly 200 pages of records related to a purported complaint by Adobe against Apple for banning iPhone developers from using its authoring tools to make iPhone apps. However, "in what might be the most-official confirmation that regulators are probing the ban for antitrust violations," the FTC declined to make them available to Wired.com, saying doing so “could be reasonably expected” to interfere with its “law enforcement” duties
Wired.com says it sought a copy of Adobe’s complaint by filing a Freedom of Information Act request in early May, which was denied in whole in a July 23 letter. “We have located 189 pages of responsive records, all of which are exempt from the FOIA’s disclosure requirement,” Joan A. Fina, the FTC’s assistant general counsel, said “These records are exempt… because disclosure of that material could reasonably be expected to interfere with the conduct of the Commission’s law enforcement activities.”

Motorola, HTC drive Android to smartphone OS Lead in the U.S.
Riding the wave of new handset introductions and wide carrier distribution in the second quarter (Q2), the Android smartphone operating system (OS) continued its upward climb in the U.S. consumer mobile phone market, according to The NPD Group (http://www.npd.com), a market research company.
For the first time since the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2007, RIM fell to second position, as Android took the lead among operating systems in handsets sold to U.S. consumers. NPD’s latest wireless market research reveals that Android accounted for 33% of all smartphones purchased in Q2, ahead of RIM (28 %) and Apple (22%).
"For the second consecutive quarter, Android handsets have shown strong but slowing sell-through market share gains among U.S. consumers," says Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. "While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch."
