Analyst looks at Apple's options in dealing with the iPhone...
The iPhone 4 antenna issue could impact Apple's operating income by 1%, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. However, he told clients that investors in Apple shouldn't overreact to the problem
"Ultimately we believe this PR black eye takes away from near-term upside potential to our iPhone estimates, but it does not change the long-term trajectory of the iPhone," Munster wrote -- and as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). "While the issue has gained significant traction in the press, the reality is we estimate this problem periodically affects 25% of iPhone 4 users given the fix is easy (a case for the iPhone), and 75% of customer choose to use a case anyway."
The analyst said Apple could give away free US$29 bumper cases, do nothing (he believes only 25% of the iPhone 4 users are "periodically" affected) or do a recall. However, Munster feels the latter is highly unlikely.
Apple responds to Psystar appeal
Apple has responded to the opening brief of clone maker, Psystar, in the ongoing legal battle.
Based on Apple’s responses to Psystar’s Opening Brief, it appears that the PC maker is hoping it can convince the court to change how copyright law is interpreted. “It seems that Psystar is pinning all its hopes in the 9th Circuit on getting the court to adopt a radical revision of the Copyright Misuse doctrine that would in effect destroy copyright and force all copyrighted works to be licensed,” an attorney familiar with this type of case told "The Mac Observer" (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/apple_responds_to_psystar_appeal_...).
“Because Psystar has no proof that Apple has inhibited competition or suppressed creativity, Psystar urges this Court to abandon long-standing precedent and create a new doctrine of per se copyright misuse,” Apple’s Answer Briefing stated. “Under this doctrine, any license agreement — such as Apple’s SLA -- that restricts the use of copyrighted software...

Companies recommend safety measures for iTunes accounts
Following two recent hacks of its iTunes store. iTunes users should now change the password on their iTunes account as well as switching to a prepaid debit card for the service, according to Fortify (http://www.fortify.com), a company that specializes in software security assurance.
Barmak Meftah, Fortify's chief products officer, told "Help Net Security" that, while Apple will almost certainly stomp on this iTunes hacking methodology, the modus operandi is similar to that used by trending malware coders, who continually check online search trends and pump out malware via a range of hastily-registered infected web sites. It boils down to raising the profile of an infected piece of code or Web site until a group of online users sees the code or web site and thinks "ooh -- that looks interesting," and then infects their computer with a trojan or malware, he added.
Meftah says that using a pre-paid debit card such as the Paypal Visa top-up card makes a lot of sense for use on online...

Judge James Ware of the U.S. District court for the Northern District of California on Thursday granted class certification of plaintiffs’ antitrust claims seeking damages and injunctive relief for the complaint that was originally filed in 2007.

With that license, a Wi-Fi iPhone can now be sold in China, suggesting it may debut soon, notes "PC World."
Representatives from Apple and China Telecom, the local carrier that Apple has selected as its partner, would not comment on the device's capabilities, nor when it would go on sale. Wi-Fi is seen as important to the success of the iPhone in China because many people want to use the devices to surf the web, but don't want to pay higher data rates for using the mobile network. China has required mobile phones with Wi-Fi also to support WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), a "homegrown" security protocol...
Research group: iPhone dominance in mobile app download market...
The dominance of the iPhone in the mobile app download market will be eroded over the coming years as rivals Android, Symbian and BlackBerry make inroads, Ovum has forecast, reports "Bank Systems & Technologies (http://macosg.me/2/i0).
A new report by the research group says that mobile application downloads generated by non-operator application stores will grow by a compound annual growth rate of around 41% globally over the next five years, with total downloads almost reaching 21.3 billion by 2015. That’s up from 2.69 billion in 2009.
According to Ovum estimates, Apple generated 67% of all smartphone app downloads in 2009, despite claiming just 14% of the overall smartphone installed base. On the other hand, Symbian commanded a 49% share of the smartphone installed base but only generated an estimated 9% of the total applications downloads market. The report states in 2015 Apple will generate a relatively modest 22% of app downloads, compared to 19% for Symbian.

Next Apple TV to stream 99 cent shows?
Apple's next rev of the Apple TV will offer US$0.99 TV shows that can be streamed, but not downloaded, according to a "NewTeeVee" report (http://macosg.me/2/hx). If that's true, Apple would be cutting the price of TV episodes in half and competing more squarely with rivals such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon's Video On Demand.
Right now Apple TV only allows you to download TV episodes from iTunes and charges an average of $1.99. "NewTeeVee" says that, once started, the new TV rental will be available for 24 hours before it expires. Unlike its current TV and movie sales through iTunes, the new service will move content into the cloud and stream it to users, rather than having them download video, the article adds.
Earlier this month, "The New York Times" also offered a forecast of what's in store for Apple's "hobby." The "Times" said that Apple is working on an update to its Apple TV and software, and will offer a completely redesigned interface for it, perhaps based on the iOS...
Jobs among top 50 'smartest people in tech'
"Fortune" (http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2010/technology/1007/gallery.smartest_peo...) lists Apple CEO Steve Jobs as among the top 50 "smartest people in tech." That list is for those with "an alchemy of intellect, ambition and that uncanny ability to peer around corners."
Here's what "Fortune" has to say about Jobs: "When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 after a 12-year exile, the company was close to bankruptcy. Thirteen years later it has a market cap of $250 billion and is the world's most valuable tech company, transforming whole industries along the way. iTunes reinvented music. Pixar, now part of Disney, elevated animated films. The iPhone changed telecom. And the new iPad has other computer makers scrambling to respond. Rocking one industry could be luck, but upending four? That's smart.
"He is a visionary, a micromanager, and a showman who creates such anticipation around new products that their releases are veritable holidays. And Jobs is a pop culture icon like no...

NTP sues Apple, others for infringement of wireless email...
Another day, another lawsuit. NTP Inc. (http://www.ntp-inc.com/) -- a company that specializes in network monitoring, security and protocol analysis solutions -- has filed lawsuits against Apple, Google, HTC Corp., LG Electronics, Microsoft and Motorola in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia for infringing NTP's eight patents related to the delivery of electronic mail over wireless communications systems.
Each of the defendants is a manufacturer or developer of either wireless handheld devices or software applications used in the delivery of email across wireless communications systems.
"Use of NTP's intellectual property without a license is just plain unfair to NTP and its licensees," Donald E. Stout, NTP's co-founder, said in a press statement. "Unfortunately, litigation is our only means of ensuring the inventor of the fundamental technology on which wireless email is based, Tom Campana, and NTP shareholders are recognized, and are fairly and...
Blue Crowbar Software releases TwitExport 2 for iPhoto, Aperture...
Blue Crowbar Software has releasedTwitExport 2, the successor to iPhoto2Twitter and Aperture2Twitter. It's a plug-in for iPhoto and Aperture that lets you send tweets and photos to Twitter from within the Mac photo application.
With TwitExport 2, the iPhoto2Twitter and Aperture2Twitter plug-ins have been merged into one product. The new name was implemented to comply with Twitter's updated trademark policy. On the outside, the new plug-in has been redesigned to become even easier to use, according to the folks at Blue Crowbar Software.
Under the hood, support has been added for Twitter's new OAuth secure authentication system. The biggest advantage of that is that the user's password for Twitter no longer has to be shared with the third party photo sites.
TwitExport 2 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher and an Intel-based Mac. It works with iPhone '08/'09 and Aperture 2.1.4 or later.
A license for one user costs US$5.90 and is valid for use with both iPhoto and Aperture. The upgrade is...
Playback Media Server gets under-the-hood improvements
Yazsoft has introduced Playback Media Server 1.6.2 (http://www.yazsoft.com/products/playback/information/), an update of their zero configuration media server for Mac OS X 10.5 and higher. The upgrade includes some under-the-hood improvements.
Playback can share media stored in folders or even make entire disks available to a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. No configuration is required. By default, it will share almost any content on the users system. And Playback automatically integrates with iTunes, iPhoto, and Aperture. Users can share all content from these applications transparently or choose specific playlists and albums.
Those who like to tinker will appreciate Playback's built-in Access Control List (ACL) and bandwidth throttling. The ACL allows users to control which devices have access to their media. Bandwidth throttling limits the transfer rate from the computer to their UPnP device. This allows others on the network to do other Internet related activities, such as surf the web...
Study looks at how the iPad is being used
Resolve Market Research has completed a comprehensive study that looks at how the iPad is being used, and how the iPad is impacting other technology devices like e-readers, portable gaming consoles and netbooks. As reported by "Mashable" (http://macosg.me/2/hw), the study shows:
° Approximately 28% of users said that one of their main uses for the iPad would be playing games. Additionally, only 23% said that they thought of the iPad as the most enjoyable device for playing games. However, after owning an iPad, those figures start to change. It turns out that 38% of respondents said that they did not plan to buy a portable gaming device after owning an iPad.
° Forty-nine percent of those surveyed said they wouldn't buy an ebook reader after owning an iPad. Other devices those surveyed said they wouldn't buy after owning the tablet: netbook/laptop (32%), MP3 player (29%), MID (24%) and smartphone (22%).

Atlona adds new features to HDAiR
Atlona Technologies (http://www.atlona.com) has added new features to the HDAiR, their wireless USB to HDMI adapter. They've also reduced the price to US$169.
The first release of the HDAiR in 2009 was a video-only solution. After its release, users from around the world responded to Atlona’s customer survey asking what additional features could make the HDAiR even better. The overall consensus was to add audio support.
So Atlona has released an all new HDAiR with the ability to output audio in both 3.5mm analog, as well as embedded on the HDMI output. This latest update to the HDAiR allows users to connect up to four receivers to a single transmitter.
This update also allows full Mac support for Mac OS X 10.4 or higher. Like the older model AT-HDAiR, this newer model with audio still uses Ultra wide band (UWB) frequencies to transmit audio and video signals.
