Apple to expand AirPlay functionality?
Apple is considering expanding its AirPlay audio service to include streaming video from an iPhone or iPad to television sets, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/i3UoT), quoting "two people familiar with the project."
AirPlay is a feature for streaming music, video and photos wirelessly from iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to the Apple TV. The wireless technology is being integrated into speaker docks, AV receivers, and stereo systems from companies such as Bowers & Wilkins and Denon.
Under the expanded AirPlay plan, Apple would license its AirPlay software to consumer-electronics makers that could use it in devices for streaming movies, TV shows and other video content, says "Bloomberg." Apple now only licenses AirPlay for streaming audio.
An expanded AirPlay would let users stream programming wirelessly from an Apple mobile device to a TV that carries the technology. That may spur wider use of Apple’s services and devices in consumers’ living rooms, including the Apple TV, says...

As of version 3, Samba provides file and print services for various Microsoft Windows clients and can integrate with a Windows Server domain, either as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) or as a domain member. The AFL-CIO, which holds about 3.8 million Disney shares, opposed Jobs’ reelection. The group said Jobs’ poor health, plus his job as CEO of Apple, make him a bad choice for Disney’s board.
Also, the Institutional Shareholder Services, an institutional investment group, also questioned Jobs’s re-election to the Disney board because of his health. ISS says that Jobs has attended less than 75% of board meetings in the last three years, and wondered if Jobs should be reelected. ISS stopped...

Analyst offers scenarios for Apple's upcoming, ginormous...
In a note to clients -- as reported by "Barron's (http://macte.ch/VWdxU) -- Sanford Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi mulled over what he considers the most likely prospects for Apple‘s Maiden, North Carolina-based data center, which may go live this spring.
Sacconaghi says the facility, which could end up being the largest such facility in the world, will probably not only be used to increase the iTunes and MobileMe services, but may help the company to offer five other services: a larger advertising platform, for serving up iAds; a digital “locker” in the “cloud” to synchronize content between users’ Apple devices; a music streaming service on a subscription basis; an “aggressively priced video subscription service”; and a service that would support a “voice interface” on Apple devices, taking user requests in spoken natural language and returning answers, similar to Google’s free voice search.
With Limewire shuttered, peer-to-peer music sharing declines
In late October 2010, LimeWire shuttered its file sharing services, months after a federal judge sided with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and found the peer-to-peer (P2P) service liable for copyright infringement.
According to The NPD Group (http://www.npd.com), a market research company, the percentage of the U.S. Internet population using a P2P file-sharing service to download music has fallen from a high of 16% in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2007 to just 9% in Q4 2010 when Limewire ceased its file-sharing operations.
The average number of music files downloaded from P2P networks also declined from 35 tracks per person in Q4 2007 to just 18 tracks in Q4 2010, although some downloaded just one or two tracks, while others took hundreds. NPD estimates there were 16 million P2P users downloading music in Q4 2010, which is 12 million fewer than in Q4 2007.
According to NPD's "Music Acquisition Monitor," Limewire was used by 56%of those using P2P services to...
Apple tells adult app store to ditch the 'app store'...
MiKandi -- which bills itself as “the world’s first app store for adults -- has been hit with a cease-and-desist letter from Apple over its use of the term "App Store," according to "GeekWire" (http://macte.ch/VPnyT).
It’s not MiKandi’s first brush with Apple. The company was pushed in the spotlight last year when Apple’s Steve Jobs referred derisively to the fact that there was a “porn store” on Android -- referring to MiKandi without using its name, says "GeekWire."
For the record, the words “app store” still appear on the MiKandi site. Co-founder Jesse Adams tells "GeekWire" they’ll wait it out, for now, and see how Microsoft’s challenge to Apple’s trademark registration turns out.
MiKandi is the second digital download service targeted by Apple in defense of its trademark application this month, the first being the Amazon App Store for Android. In a complaint filed March 18 in federal court in northern California, Apple accused Amazon.com of trademark infringement and unfair...

Jobs to testify in iTunes antitrust suit
A federal magistrate judge has ordered Apple CEO Steve Jobs to answer questions in an antitrust dispute alleging the company operated a music-downloading monopoly, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/A6jgl).
Lawyers for consumers who filed the 2005 complaint won permission to conduct limited questioning of Jobs, under an order issued yesterday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Howard R. Lloyd in San Jose, California. The deposition can’t exceed two hours and the only topic allowed is changes Apple made to its software in October 2004 that rendered digital music files engineered by RealNetworks inoperable with Apple’s iPod music player, says "Bloomberg."
“The court finds that Jobs has unique, non-repetitive, firsthand knowledge about the issues at the center of the dispute over RealNetworks software,” Lloyd wrote.
In 2005 Californian Thomas Slattery sued Apple for unspecified damages for being "forced" to buy an iPod. He said Apple encoded its digital music files with proprietary software...

Apple sues Amazon.com over use of 'App Store'
Apple has sued Amazon.com, saying the online retailer is using Apple’s “App Store” trademark for a mobile-software developer program, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/c5tsj).
In a complaint filed March 18 in federal court in northern California, Apple accused Amazon.com of trademark infringement and unfair competition and asked for a judge’s order to prevent the company from using the “App Store” name, as well as for unspecified damages.
Apple registered for a trademark on the term App Store on July 17, 2008. It has been using the name since then to refer to its applications store for iOS devices. Earlier this year it also launched the Mac App Store.
“Amazon has begun improperly using Apple’s App Store mark in connection with Amazon’s mobile-software developer program,” Apple said in the complaint. Amazon also plans to use the name with a mobile-software download service, the complaint states.
Amazon began using the App Store designation around the beginning of this year,...
Two groups oppose Jobs' reelection to Disney board of...
The AFL-CIO, which holds about 3.8 million Disney shares, is opposing Steve Jobs’ reelection to Disney’s board of directors, reports "Cult of Mac" (http://macte.ch/Cv6JA).
The group says Jobs’ poor health, plus his job as CEO of Apple, make him a bad choice for Disney’s board. Jobs -- the largest individual shareholder with 7% of Disney’s stock, awarded after the company's purchase of Pixar in 2006 -- is likely to be reelected at Disney’s annual meeting on Wednesday.
The union isn’t the only group opposing Jobs, notes "Cult of Mac." Institutional Shareholder Services, an institutional investment group, is also questioning Jobs’s reelection to the Disney board because of his health. ISS says that Jobs has attended less than 75% of board meetings in the last three years, and wonders if Jobs should be reelected. ISS stopped short of rejecting Jobs but said shareholders deserve greater disclosure about his ability to function as a director, says "Cult of Mac."
