'AppleInsider': over a million MacBook Airs shipped...
Apple's teeny laptop is a hit. Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) that his most recent checks in Asia indicate Apple shipped a total of 1.1 million of its 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Airs during the three-month period ending December, "making the new breed of ultra-thin portables one of the company's most successful Mac product launches ever." Those figures are about 63% higher, or 400,000 units more, than the 700,000 units that Kuo had initially estimated. The figures also support an earlier claim by "AppleInsider" that the new MacBook Airs comprised more than a third Mac maker's notebook business in the fourth quarter. Apple doesn't break down its Mac or device sales by product family. However, the company shipped just over 2.9 million notebook systems during the fourth quarter of 2010. At 1.1 million units, the new MacBook Airs captured a 40% slice of the company's notebook business and accounted for just over a quarter of its...

iPhone data downloads faster on AT&T than Verizon
The iPhone 4 on AT&T's network downloaded data twice as fast, on average, as the iPhone on Verizon Wireless, according to thousands of recent field tests in five U.S. cities conducted by Metrico Wireless, an independent mobile device performance evaluation company. Metrico's tests looked at several other variables, however, and found the average Web page load time was nearly the same on iPhone 4 on both networks, a Metrico official told "InfoWorld" (http://macte.ch/QA9BR). What's more, when the iPhone 4 was in a moving vehicle, the AT&T model successfully finished about 10% more download session than Verizon's. However, when the iPhones were stationary, the Verizon iPhone had a 10 percent better success rate in uploading data than the AT&T iPhone, notes "InfoWorld." Metrico didn't reveal actual time measurements for any of its results, including the data downloads and uploads or Web page loading times, prior to publication of its full study.

Best Buy may give iPad 2 to all salespersons
Best Buy is considering distributing iPad 2s to every salesperson in its 1,000-plus chain, reports "The Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal" (http://macte.ch/l1vH8). The retailer has given out iPads and other mobile devices to sales employees on a limited basis before, but only in a couple of dozen stores, the article adds. The idea is part of its "Connected Store" format. That format "is modeled on Apple's high-touch retail stores, where salespeople often use such devices to process orders and customers get a lot of hands-on time with the iPads, iPhones and other products," according to The Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal."

Apple is talking with record companies including Vivendi SA (VIV)’s Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp. (WMG) and EMI Group to give users more flexibility in how they access purchased music, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/k8U6Y). Under discussion is a deal that would provide iTunes customers with a permanent backup of music purchases if the originals are damaged or lost, the article says, quoting "three people with knowledge of the plans." The service also would allow downloads to iPad, iPod and iPhone devices linked to the same iTunes account, they said. The move would be a step closer to universal access to content centrally stored on the Internet. Apple and the record labels are eager to maintain demand for digital downloading amid increasing popularity for Internet services such as Pandora Media, which don’t sell tracks and instead let users stream songs from the Web, whatever the device, says "Bloomberg."
