Gartner: Android to have half of smartphone OS market by 2012
Worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million units in 2011, a 57.7% increase from 2010, according to Gartner. By the end of 2011, Android will move to become the most popular operating system (OS) worldwide and will build on its strength to account for 49% of the smartphone market by 2012, according to the research group. Sales of open OS devices will account for 26% of all mobile handset device sales in 2011, and are expected to surpass the one billion mark by 2015, when they will account for 47% of the total mobile device market. “By 2015, 67% of all open OS devices will have an average selling price of $300 or below, proving that smartphones have been finally truly democratized,” says Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner. “As vendors delivering Android-based devices continue to fight for market share, price will decrease to further benefit consumers. Android's position at the high end of the market will remain strong, but its greatest volume opportunity in the longer...

App Tamer updated to version 1.0.6
St. Clair Software has released App Tamer 1.0.6 (http://www.stclairsoft.com/AppTamer/), an update of the app for Mac OS X 10.4 and higher that gives you control over your applications so you can save battery and CPU power. The new version of App Tamer corrects several problems and reduces App Tamer's own CPU demands. Some Mac applications, especially web browsers, continue running tasks or animations even when they're supposed to be idle in the background. This can consume valuable processing power and reduce battery life. App Tamer's AutoStop capability automatically pauses these applications when you switch away from them, and then restarts them when you click back to them. This frees your CPU and reduces power consumption, according to the folks at St. Clair. App Tamer shows the average percentage of your processor(s) being used by each app, and graphically displays a history of CPU usage. You can enable AutoStop for any application, as well as change its processing priority in OS...

Apple's patent case against accessory makers proceeds
Apple's patent infringement suit against makers of unlicensed accessories for the company’s iPod, iPhone and iPad devices can proceed, a federal judge ruled yesterday, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/5Pej8). In July 2010 Apple sued eForCity Corp. and six other companies (Accstation, Itrimming, Everydaysource, United Integral, Crayzondigital and Boxware) in the California Northern District Court in San Jose, California, for infringing nine patents. Most defendant companies are related and are located in El Monte, California, according to court papers. Apple said in its complaint that the companies weren’t participants in its “Made for iPod” program, and were producing products of “inferior quality and reliability, raising significant concerns over compatibility with and damage to Apple’s products.” The infringement case stands, despite eForCity’s argument that it was procedurally improper. U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel said Apple properly stated its claims in its complaint....

Xoom, Atrix 4G smartphone not hot sellers
Analysts say the Xoom Android tablet (pictured) and Atrix smartphone are poor performers, despite heavy marketing campaigns launched by Verizon Wireless and AT&T, respectively, reports "InformationWeek" (http://macte.ch/H6OYb). According to Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette's channel checks, sales of the Xoom and Atrix have been "disappointing," the article says. His research led him to cut Motorola's revenue and earnings projections for the rest of the year and into 2012. "Based on our checks, we believe overall sell-through trends for of the Xoom and Atrix have been disappointing," Faucette said in a note to clients. "In particular, we believe Atrix's lower-than-forecast volumes are a result of the $49 iPhone 3GS and the HTC Inspire, which kept Atrix sales well below forecast in spite of the marketing focus put on the Atrix by AT&T." While Faucette doesn't provide any actual sales guesstimates for the Xoom, Deutsche Bank pegs the number of Xooms sold at just 100,000,...

Survey: teens flocking to the iPhone
Apple has achieved a record 17% iPhone market share among teens with an additional 37% of respondents indicating interest in buying an iPhone in the next six months, according to a new survey by the Piper Jaffray research group, as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). The percentage of teens who own the iPhone jumped from 14% in October of last year to 17% this spring. The number of teens who plan on buying an iPhone in the next six months rose from 33% last fall to 37% this spring. According to Piper Jaffray, intent to buy has historically translated into subsequent market share gains. What's more, the 21st bi-annual Piper Jaffray teen survey of 4,500 high school students found that Apple continues to dominate the teen market and has driven "surprisingly quick adoption" of tablets by teens, the article adds. The survey -- which includes tablets for the first time -- says 22% of teens now own a tablet and 20% plan to buy one in the next six months. Though the...

iPad 2 tops Consumer Report's tablet ratings
After almost a year in which the Apple iPad has been virtually the only game in town in tablet computers, some serious competitors are finally hitting the market. Yet in Consumer Reports latest tests of the 10 most-promising tablet computers, the iPad 2 with Wi-Fi and 3G topped the Ratings. The full report including Ratings of tablets is available at www.ConsumerReports.org .    In Consumer Reports lab tests, the Motorola Xoom revealed itself as the iPad 2’s chief rival.  Like the iPad 2, the Xoom boasts a 10-inch screen but adds conveniences that the iPad lacks, including a built-in memory card reader and support for the Flash videos and animations found on many websites.             “So far Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced,” says Paul Reynolds, Electronics Editor at Consumer Reports. “However, it’s likely we’ll see more competitive pricing in tablets as other models begin to hit the...

Apple ordered as much as 12PB -- yep, 12 petabyes or 12,000 terabytes -- of capacity from Isilon Systems (http://www.isilon.com/), notably to manage the video download of its customers using iTunes, according to "Storage Newsletter" (http://macte.ch/qD0tZ), quoting an inside source of the new division of EMC. It's probably the largest of its 1,500 customers recorded at the end of December, including 20% in Europe, the article adds. Apple's deal with Isilon was said to "probably" make the iPhone maker the largest customer of the storage provider, according to "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). Other clients of Isilon include Ancestry.com, Clear Channel, MySpace, NBC Universal, Sony, World Wrestling Entertainment, XM Satellite Radio. Isilon's Scale-out Storage Platform, powered by the OneFS operating system, combines a suite of management applications and enterprise-class hardware. Whither the white iPhone?
Apple has promised a white iPhone will arrive sometime this spring, but according to a new store update it’s looking like the handset has taken one step back, not closer to launch, says "SlashGear" (http://macte.ch/lmV6N). After the Apple Store went down overnight, the white iPhone SKU was gone from the system. As "SlashGear" notes, this could mean that Apple is preparing a different version with a new SKU, or it might mean that the company has given up on the white iPhone idea altogether. Last month an iPhone fan wrote Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president of worldwide marketing, on how to get a white iPhone. Schiller reportedly answered with a terse, Jobs-ian answer: "The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!)." The white iPhone has been troubled since the start. When Apple announced the iPhone 4, it said it would be available in black and white models. However, on June 23, 2010, Apple issued a statement that the white models "have proven more challenging...

Analyst predicts iPad 3, iPhone 5 this fall
Matthew Bryson of Avian Securities, who follows component makers such as Micron Technology (MU), this morning tells clients in a note -- as reported by "Barron's" (http://macte.ch/DaO0s) that "recent conversations with the electronics supply chain indicate that Apple (AAPL) is sending out design specifications and component needs for the next generation iPad." I'm dubious but Bryson thinks we'll see an iPad 3 within six months. The analyst thinks it may arrive this fall along with the iPhone 5, which he doesn't believe will launch in June as some have predicted (or at least hoped). “We feel the 2H launch fits well with indications an iPhone 5 launch could also come later in the year," Bryson writes. "With the two platforms sharing similar hardware in many respects, in our view it would make some sense to see the platforms roll-out simultaneously with this timing likely enabling Apple to offer 4G enabled products.” "Barron's"notes that he analyst thinks a fall introduction of a new...

Based on a conservative estimate, Apple is likely to take delivery of 4-4.3 million units a month, or a total of over 12 million units, of iPad 2 tablets in the second quarter, said sources told "DigiTimes." Woz: an iPad-like device has been Jobs' goal all along
Apple co-founder Steve ("Woz") Wozniak is rooting for the iPad, which he says has been a mission for Steve Jobs' since day one, reports "The Huffington Post" (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/05/apple-cofounder-steve-wozniak-t...) . Speaking to a gathering of engineers at Storage Networking World in Santa Clara, California, Woz told his audience that tablets were intended for "the normal people in the world." He said the iPad had been Steve Jobs's ultimate goal since Apple was founded in 1976. "But it was just hard to get there, because we had to go through a lot of steps where you connected to things, and (eventually) computers grew up to where they could do ... normal consumer appliance things," Woz said.

Analyst expects iTunes-related cloud strategy soon
Apple is expected to release its own iTunes-related cloud strategy soon likely integrating its MobileMe services and taking advantage of its investments in its North Carolina data center, Ben Reitzes, an analyst at Barclays Capital, told clients in a note -- as reported by "International Business Times" (http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/130749/20110405/apple-inc-itunes-mobilem...). Last week, Amazon announced its Amazon Cloud Drive, Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Amazon Cloud Player for Android with the ability to store music, photos, videos and documents in the cloud and access them on many devices. "We believe the launch of Apple’s service is much more complex than Amazon’s given its millions of users with years worth of files," Reitzes says. "Also Apple faces much more legal scrutiny in terms of attention from content owners and regulators – who will need to be 'on board' from day one." The analyst said Apple would use its cloud based iTunes/MobileMe service to further "lock in"...

Analyst: iPad to take 70% of tablet market
Computer sales continue to grow, but at a slower pace than expected, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore writes in a note to investors -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). He's reduced his computer unit growth, excluding tablet sales, for 2011 to a 4% year-over-year increase, compared to his previous prediction of 9%. Though computer sales saw a significant reduction in estimates, Whitmore boosted his 2011 tablet sales forecast to 45 million, up from 40 million. And he thinks 35 million of those tablets will be iPads. "In aggregate, we believe iPad will remain dominant with 70% market share," says Whitmore. "Our tablet unit estimate remains below Consensus due to our concerns that non-iPad tablets will underwhelm."

AT&T iPhoners more likely to report dropped calls than those...
Owners of Apple's iPhone 4 on the AT&T network are more than twice as likely to report dropped calls than Verizon customers, according to a new survey by the ChangeWave research group (http://www.changewave.com). A new ChangeWave survey of 4,068 consumers has taken a close up look at key comparisons between Verizon iPhone 4 owners and AT&T iPhone 4 owners – including customer satisfaction and dropped call rates. The ChangeWave survey, completed March 28, was conducted several weeks after Verizon began offering the iPhone 4. Among other things, the results provide insight into how owners believe the AT&T and Verizon iPhones stack up against each other in a couple of key areas. In terms of overall satisfaction the two iPhones are virtually indistinguishable. A look at the Very Satisfied ratings for each shows 82% of Verizon iPhone 4 customers saying they're Very Satisfied versus 80% of AT&T iPhone 4 customers. For the past few years ChangeWave has been tracking overall...

Nasdaq OMX rebalances, reduces 'big weighting' of...
Nasdaq OMX has announced a rare rebalancing of its Nasdaq-100 index, which will reduce the "big weighting" of Apple, reports the "Wall Street Journal" (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870458700457624323156649384...). The company currently makes up more than 20% of the index. Apple’s stock value accounts for just over 20% of the index, but after the restructuring it will account for slightly over 12%. Still, at 12.3% Apple will still be the largest single component on the index. The rebalancing was driven in part by "the seemingly unstoppable rise in Apple shares, which are up more than fourfold in the past two years," says the "WSJ."

VirnetX expands lawsuit against Apple, others
VirnetX Holding Corp. has expanded the scope of its patent litigation case against Apple and other companies by filing its first amended complaint, reports "Seeking Alpha" (http://seekingalpha.com/article/251243-virnetx-expands-scope-of-patent-case). In the original complaint, VirnetX accused Apple of infringing on its ‘135 and ‘151 patents. The new amended filing now suggests that Apple’s products also infringe on several claims of yet another patent known as the ‘504 patent, titled “Agile Network Protocol for Secure Communications Using Secure Domain Names." The invention covers a system for providing a domain name service for establishing a secure communication link, says "Seeking Alpha." VirnetX Holding Corp. sued Apple, Aastra, Cisco and NEC for patent infringement. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division, the patent lawsuit capital of the universe.
VirneX claims the companies violate five of its patents that...

Apple wins patent related to Cover Flow, Time Machine
Apple has won its appeal in a patent lawsuit related to its Cover Flow and Time Machine technologies, reports "The Mac Observer" (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/court_overturns_cover_flow_patent...). The new ruling doesn’t invalidate the Mirror Worlds patents. Instead, it only stated that Apple didn’t infringe on the company’s patents, saving the company from a US$625.5 million judgement, says "The Mac Observer." In 2008 Mirror Worlds Technologies, a Texas based company, accused Apple of violating four distinct but related patents that touch on creating "streams" of documents that are automatically sorted according to time stamps, including future dates assigned to calendars and other reminders. The company said that just about all of Apple's product line infringes on a system for organizing data by time, "but draws its closest connection with the Time Machine backup feature in Mac OS X Leopard." Apple was ordered by a jury to pay damages to Mirror Worlds for infringing...
