VirnetX Holding Corp. has expanded the scope of its patent litigation case against Apple and other companies by filing its first amended complaint, reports "Seeking Alpha" (http://seekingalpha.com/article/251243-virnetx-expands-scope-of-patent-case).

In the original complaint, VirnetX accused Apple of infringing on its ‘135 and ‘151 patents. The new amended filing now suggests that Apple’s products also infringe on several claims of yet another patent known as the ‘504 patent, titled “Agile Network Protocol for Secure Communications Using Secure Domain Names." The invention covers a system for providing a domain name service for establishing a secure communication link, says "Seeking Alpha."

VirnetX Holding Corp. sued Apple, Aastra, Cisco and NEC for patent infringement. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division, the patent lawsuit capital of the universe.


VirneX claims the companies violate five of its patents that involve virtual private networking (VPN) connectivity. The company received a US$200 million settlement from Microsoft in May on similar complaints.

One patent cited in both lawsuits, titled "Agile network protocol for secure communications with assured system availability," describes technologies for creating and managing a virtual private networking (VPN) connection, notes "Computerworld" (http://macosg.me/2/pa). VirnetX has asked for both unspecified damages and injunctive relief.
