Apple reportedly buys 43-acre site in San Jose
Apple has bought an undeveloped 43-acre site in San Jose in a deal worth US$138 million, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal (http://tinyurl.com/phylr7v). It could add as much as 2.8 million square feet of space to Apple's inventory, the article says.
The deal comes on the heels of Apple's lease of property from Ellis Partners in an already constructed building almost next door. The Cupertino-based company is the new tenant of the 290,000-square-foot building near the corner of Orchard Parkway and Charcott Avenue in North San Jose.

Researchers say they've created a firmware bug that attacks...
Two researchers have found that several known vulnerabilities affecting the firmware of all the top PC makers can also hit the firmware of Macs, claims Wired (http://tinyurl.com/nmkesyl).
What’s more, the article says that researchers have designed a proof-of-concept worm for the first time that would allow a firmware attack to spread automatically from MacBook to MacBook, without the need for them to be networked.
"[The attack is] really hard to detect, it’s really hard to get rid of, and it’s really hard to protect against something that’s running inside the firmware,"says Xeno Kovah, one of the researchers who designed the worm, told Wired. "For most users that’s really a throw-your-machine-away kind of situation. Most people and organizations don’t have the wherewithal to physically open up their machine and electrically reprogram the chip."
The Mac firmware research was conducted by Kovah, owner of LegbaCore, a firmware security consultancy, and Trammell Hudson, a security...

Apple may be launching an iCloud and Siri-based voicemail service
According to Business Insider (http://tinyurl.com/ov74gye), Apple employees are testing a voicemail service that uses Siri — the company's "personal assistant" on iOS devices — to answer your calls and transcribe voicemail messages.
Apple's iCloud service will then send you the text of the transcribed voicemail. This means you'll never need to listen to your voicemails again, says Business Insider, which says the new service is being prepared for launch in 2016.
According to the article, this is how it will work: When someone using iCloud Voicemail is unable to take a call, Siri will answer instead of letting the call go to a standard digital audio recorder. iCloud Voicemail can relay information about where you are and why you can't pick up the phone to certain people. Siri will transcribe any incoming voicemails.

Rob Crooke, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group, says the explosion of connected devices and digital services is generating massive amounts of new data. To make this data useful, it must be stored and analyzed very quickly, which creates challenges for service providers and system builders who must balance cost, power and performance trade-offs when they design memory and storage solutions.
Crooke says 3D XPoint technology combines the performance, density, power, non-volatility and cost advantages of all available memory technologies on the market today...

Worldwide smartphone market posts 11.6% year-over-year growth in...
According to the latest preliminary release from IDC (www.idc.com), vendors shipped a total of 337.2 million smartphones worldwide in the second quarter of 2015 (2Q15), up 11.6% from the 302.1 million units in 2Q14.
The 2Q15 shipment volume represents the second highest quarterly total on record. Following an above average first quarter (1Q15), smartphone shipments were still able to remain slightly above the previous quarter thanks to robust growth in many emerging markets. In the worldwide mobile phone market (inclusive of smartphones), vendors shipped 464.6 million units, down -0.4% from the 466.3 million units shipped 2Q14.
"The overall growth of the smartphone market was not only driven by the success of premium flagship devices from Samsung, Apple, and others, but more importantly by the abundance of affordable handsets that continue to drive shipments in many key markets," says Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team.
Although premium handsets sold...

Juniper: Apple is the biggest smartwatch seller yet
Juniper Research (www.juniperresearch.com) estimates that Apple sold between 2 and 2.5 million watches this quarter, bringing in approximately US$1 billion in revenue. That makes it the best-selling smartwatch in the market, with over six million sales expected by year-end.
"However, despite buyers being satisfied with the device, we continue to see that the product is running out of steam," says Juniper devices analyst James Moar. "We would also expect a decline in sales following launch, especially as the first half of the year draws to a close. This means we are unlikely to see more than seven million Apple Watches sold by the end of 2015, even with a boost to sales over the Christmas period."
