Avecto announces Mac version of its security software
Endpoint security software firm Avecto has announced a Mac version of its Defendpoint software (avecto.com/defendpoint). Go to the product web site for more info, including pricing.   By drawing on Avecto’s least privilege capabilities, organizations can finally achieve least privilege on their OS X devices.Taking this approach, all Mac users operate without admin rights and can still remain productive, while closing a security loophole that has made Macs an increasingly soft target for hackers, says Paul Kenyon, EVP at Avecto. "It is naive to think that Macs are more secure than Windows devices as that is a totally false perception. With Macs becoming an increasingly popular choice in business, it is no longer possible to ignore the growing risk they present," he says. "In recent weeks we've seen growing evidence of Mac products becoming an increasing target for cyber criminals. The recent XCode Ghost Malware, where cyber criminals planted malware on Apple apps, is a prime example of...

iOS 9's App Slicing feature disabled for now
Apple has temporarily removed iOS 9's App Slicing feature due to a bug in iCloud. The feature will purportedly be reenabled at some point. In a note to developers (https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=092415a), Apple says: "App slicing is currently unavailable for iOS 9 apps due to an issue affecting iCloud backups created from iOS 9 where some apps from the App Store would only restore to the same model of iOS device. When a customer downloads your iOS 9 app, they will get the Universal version of your app, rather than the variant specific for their device type. TestFlight will continue to deliver variants for your internal testers. App slicing will be reenabled with a future software update. No action is needed by you at this time."\ App Slicing (also known as app thinning) tailors app delivery to the capabilities of the user’s particular device, with minimal footprint. This optimization, called app thinning, lets you create apps that use the most device features, occupy minimum...

ICNSmini is new bitmap shrinking app for the Mac
Ohanaware (www.ohanaware.com) has introduced ICNSmini 1.0 for Mac OS X. It's a developer utility that slims PNG, ICNS, TIFF and Iconset images down in file size. Some files can shed up to 85% of their digital fat. Underneath ICNSmini's exterior lies Ohanaware's custom ICNS generator, custom TIFF processor and "pngquant." pngquant is a process for compressing PNG files, and its behind many image compression tools. ICNSmini converts iconsets into compressed ICNS files, with the same savings as an ICNS file. It compresses PNG files up to 25% of their original size. It can slim TIFF files, on average, down to 30% of their original file size. (Actual compression rates will vary, dependent upon the content of the image.) ICNSmini requires OS X 10.9 or newer. It's free from the Mac App Store in the Graphics & Design category. Batch processing is available via an in-app purchase; without batch processing images can still be compressed, one at a time.

Magnetola is new music player with sound softener for Mac OS X
Hovik Melikyan has introduced Magnetola 1.0 (http://www.magnetola.com) for OS X. Stylized as a vintage compact cassette player, it's a "sensory-friendly" music player that can play tracks either unaltered or, for more sensitive ears, slightly "softened." Magnetola's unique audio softener filter can smoothen the rough edges of individual instruments, as well follow the overall dynamic of the song and suppress sudden big attacks, according to Melikyan. The player also features sliders for adjusting highs and lows (that's shelving filters in technical language). You can either boost or cut off high and low frequencies to your liking; we call these parameters "silk" and "wool" respectively. Magnetola plays songs from your music library and features a library browser stylized as a compact cassette collection. It requires OS X 10.10 or later and costs US$3.99. It's available at the Mac App Store in the Music category. Magnetola is also available on the iPhone and iPad running iOS 8 or...

Rememoried game for Mac OSX available on Steam
Hangonit has announced Rememoried for Mac OS X and Windows. It's a game available at Steam (http://tinyurl.com/qy9jvyz) for US$9.99. Here's how the game is descibed: "Rememoried is a virtual place where memories change to dreams and the only possible way is forgetting, which becomes a mechanism for proceeding to the next layer of dreams. Some elements in the surroundings change when the player turns away or leaves, and become more than just a direction sign: they become the way along which the player walks, flies and falls. "The basic element of gameplay is the ability to forget. Some elements in the surroundings change when the player turns away or leaves, and become more than just a direction sign: they become the way along which the player walks, flies and falls. Finding such a way to the higher levels is a matter of his aptness and intuition, rewarded by advancing higher. Failure, on the other hand, brings a return to the lower levels, which may be more or less altered then. "If...

Court says Apple can block competitors for using its...
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has ruled that Apple is entitled to blocking competitors from using its intellectual property, reports Bloomberg (http://tinyurl.com/pt6kca3). The court said Apple was entitled to a narrow order that prevents Samsung from using Apple’s slide-to-unlock, autocorrect and quicklinks features. To rule otherwise would eliminate patent rights of inventors of certain features in multicomponent devices, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington said in an opinion posted on its electronic docket. This is all part of an ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung had filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices. On May 14, 2014, an U.S. appeals court affirmed a decision by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) that Apple is innocent of violating three patents owned by Samsung....

Apple wants the Supreme Court to look into the ebook price...
Apple will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a federal judge’s finding that it conspired to fix the prices of ebooks when it launched its original iPad and iBook store in January 2010, according to FORTUNE (http://tinyurl.com/q85petu). "This case . . . presents issues of surpassing importance to the United States economy," the company argues in papers filed with the high court Wednesday. "Dynamic, disruptive entry into new or stagnant markets—the lifeblood of American economic growth—often requires the very type of" conduct that Apple engaged in, the company argues, and which U.S. District Judge Denise Cote of Manhattan found to be illegal in July 2013. In June a federal appeals court ruled that Apple orchestrated a conspiracy with five publishers to increase ebook prices, in a victory for the U.S. Justice Department. The company is due to pay an US$450 million settlement. By a 2-1 vote, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a lower court judge that the conspiracy...

Turntable is new 'real album' app for the Mac
Turntable for Mac, a "real album" app for Mac OS X, is now available at the Mac App Store for US$14.99. (A demo is available at http://tinyurl.com/nn63wuk.) It's touted as the first desktop music player ever to present real albums as you have in a physical collection. Albums and album art play full-screen and wide-screen on your computer. It’s the first time album art displays just like a real-life LP, like the records in the 60s, 70s, & 80s.  The app, presenting Albums as the main navigation medium, provides also varied, visual ways to navigate an album. You can scroll through a matte collection of tiled album art. You can scroll/thumb through full screen records like a physical album. Or you can browse by charts of artists.
