Analyst predicts iMac, MacBook Pro refreshes next month
In a note to analysts -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster thinks we'll see iMac, MacBook Pro and possibly MacBook Air updates in June and a new iPhone in October.
It's been more than a year since the iMac and MacBook Pro lines were revamped. "AppleInsider" notes that the MB Pro "may be ripe for a major redesign as the most recent came four years ago in late 2008."
Munster estimates worldwide Mac sales to be up about 15% year-to-year in the quarter ending in June, which amounts to 4.5 million units. Mac sales will account for about 15% of Apple's revenue for the quarter.
Apple releases two security updates
Apple has released Flashback Removal Security Update and Leopard Security Update today.
Flashback Removal Security Update for Mac OS X 10.5 removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware. If the Flashback malware is found, a dialog will notify you that malware was removed. Leopard Security Update 2012-003 disables versions of Adobe Flash Player that do not include the latest security updates and provides the option to get the current version from Adobe's website. It's a 1.11MB download.
Both updates are available via the Software Update component of Mac OS X's Systems Preferences app. Each update requires Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Court: Apple can proceed in efforts to block Samsung tablet...
A U.S. appeals court has ruled that Apple can press its bid for an immediate block on the sale of some tablets made by Samsung based on allegations of infringement of one patent, reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/prcEf).
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said the judge in a district court in California had erred in deciding that Apple failed to show that it was likely to succeed on the merits, the article adds. The dispute over that one patent is part of a larger legal proceeding in California. In mid-April, Apple and Samsung agreed that their chief executives would participate in settlement talks to try to resolve the dispute, according to a court filing, notes "Reuters."
Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. Almost two weeks ago a German court dismissed two cases brought by Apple and Samsung against each other as part of the ongoing legal battle.
Kaspersky Labs: Apple wants our help on OS X security -- or not...
Speaking exclusively to "Computing" (http://macte.ch/yom19), Kaspersky Chief Technical Officer Nikolai Grebennikov said his firm had recently begun the process of analyzing the Mac OS platform at Apple's request. However, that's apparently not the case.
"Mac OS is really vulnerable, and Apple recently invited us to improve its security," he said. "We've begun an analysis of its vulnerabilities, and the malware targeting it."
Grebennikov told "Computing" that, in his personal view, Apple does not take security seriously enough.
"Our first investigations show Apple doesn't pay enough attention to security," he said. "For example, Oracle closed a vulnerability in Java, which was a target for a major botnet several months ago."
However, "The Mac Observer" (http://www.macobserver.com) reported Monday afternoon that Kaspersky issued a statement saying that comments claiming that Apple had asked the firm for security help were taken out of context. "It would appear, however, that Kaspersky...
Apple drops '4G' from iPad ads
Apple has stopped using the phrase 4G in adverts for its latest iPad, reports the "BBC" (http://macte.ch/iKsCt). The description proved controversial because 4G isn't widely available in the UK, and he Apple tablet wont' work with it when it is.
The UK's advertising watchdog and others around the world investigated Apple over use of the 4G phrase, notes the "BBC." Apple said the confusion arose because of the ways operators refer to different high-speed mobile technologies, the article adds.

Apple #2 on fastest growing list of tech companies
Apple is number two on Forbes' list of "America's 25 Fastest Growing Tech Companies" (http://macte.ch/7KwES), surpassed only by LinkedIn.
Here's what Forbes has to say about Apple: "We know that it dominates the market for mobile computing. We know it faces challenges from the loss of Steve Jobs. We know that it’s building a giant bagel-shaped campus in Cupertino. The known unknowns are when it will introduce the next iPhone or iPad or a TV. How much of a threat is Windows 8 to the tablet business? Can Tim Cook really fill Steve’s shoes?
"And then we get to the juicy part. The unknown unknowns. We can’t tell you what those are; that’s why they’re unknown unknowns. (Duh.) But the unknown unknowns are what really drive the stock. Did anyone see the iPad coming? Did you really think the App Store would change the face of the software industry? The crucial question for investors is how much weight you give to things you can’t begin to imagine."
Closed Captioning added to Final Cut Pro X training
Two titles in Larry Jordan’s Final Cut Pro X training (http://www.jfdcommunications.com) -- "Final Cut Pro X - Workflow & Editing" and "Final Cut Pro X – New Features (10.0.3)" -- are now closed captioned, Larry Jordan, Apple trainer, announced.
He says he took the unusual step of making his NLE training closed captioned after a seminar he taught at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., which specializes in liberal education and career development for deaf and hard of hearing students.
“Both hearing and non-hearing students attended my Final Cut Pro X seminar at Gallaudet last autumn so we arranged to have sign language interpreters," Jorsn says. "Those interpreters were provided by Mandy David’s wonderful, Florida based company, JFD Communications, LLC. From her I learned that closed captioning would improve accessibility not only to the deaf and hard-of-hearing, but to individuals who do not speak English as a first language. So, I asked Mandy to take on the challenge of...

Author: when I sell a million ebooks I'll give my house to...
Self-described "Apple fan boy," Rob Shoesmith, 30, from Coventry, England, says he's going to give his house away to a homeless charity when he sells one million copies of his debut book, "Bin There Done That" (US$5.99), on Amazon Kindle and Apple's iBookStore.
"Bin There Done That" is an account of how Shoesmith used the world of smartphone apps to transform his life after hitting rock bottom, which culminated in a 10-night camping experiment outside an Apple Store in Central London for the release of the iPhone 4s. Key to his experiment was that he couldn't spend any of his own money while in line; he says he generated over $30,000 of sponsorship from 100 plus companies.
"Throughout the course of my 10 day camp out the homeless people outside the Apple Store played a huge part in helping me get through to the end, and I was motivated to stick with it so I could give away some of the camping equipment to people who really did need it," Shoesmith says. "Before coming into the world...

Apple accuses Samsung of 'spoilation of evidence'
On May 1, Apple filed a motion in the Northern District of California alleging that Samsung intentionally destroyed documents it was obligated to hand over as part of the discovery process, an act referred to as "spoilation of evidence" in the legal parlance, reports "NetworkWorld."
The article says that Apple wants the Judge to instruct the jury as follows:
1. Samsung had a duty to preserve relevant evidence, failed to do so, and acted in bad faith in failing to meet its legal duty.
2. The jury may infer that documents Samsung failed to produce would have been advantageous to Apple's position.
3. If the jury finds Samsung liable for infringement, they may presume that the infringement was "intentional, willful, without regard to Apple's rights."

Earlier this week Apple updated its Safari web browser, patched four vulnerabilities and instituted a new feature that pulls out-of-date copies of Flash Player from the system. Users who want to view Flash content can upgrade to the current version of the browser plug-in.
In a blog (http://macte.ch/GAvyM) Arkin had this to say: "we welcome today’s initiative by Apple to encourage Mac users to stay up-to-date: With the Apple Safari 5.1.7 update released today, Apple is disabling older versions of Flash Player (specifically Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and earlier) and directing users to the Flash Player Download Center, from where they can install the latest, most secure version of Flash Player. Pre-release of Injection for Xcode available
Developer John Holdsworth set up a small site (http://injectionforxcode.com _from which it's possible to download a pre-release version of Injection for Xcode.
Using Injection it's possible to make a change to the implementation of an Objective-C class and have it take effect as soon as the class is saved without having to restart an application. This works for OS X and iOS applications in the simulator and on iOS devices.
Injection works by converting your classes into categories using a small set of preprocessor macros. This category can then be loaded at run time using a bundle. As Objective-C "binds" at runtime, it will always chose the new implementation of the class over that which the application was last built with.
Injection is free to evaluate for two weeks. After this you'll be prompted to buy the application the next time it starts.

Proview rejects Apple settlement offer?
Apple has reportedly offered 100 million yuan ($16 million) for rights to the iPad name in China in its ongoing legal battle with Proview, reports "The Next Web" (http://macte.ch/6pBPd). However, "cash-strapped" Proview is apparently holding out for at least $400 million in order to appease its creditors, eight of which are Chinese banks, the article adds.
Last week a California judge tossed out a lawsuit in which the Chinese firm Proview Electronics accused Apple Inc of tricking them into selling the "iPad" name for less than it might have, reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/LF8xB). Judge Mark Pierce dismissed the case, agreeing with Apple's argument that the two parties had agreed to settle any disagreements in Hong Kong, the article adds.
In February accused Apple of "deception" in the way it acquired rights to the iPad name. In Californian court filings, Proview claimed Apple created a UK-registered "special purpose company," IP Application Development Ltd (IPADL).

"We've discovered that this (improving factory conditions) is not a cost. It is a competitive strength," Gou told reporters on Thursday. "I believe Apple sees this as a competitive strength along with us, and so we will split the initial costs."

Tablet plans are 40% of all mobile broadband plans
An analysis of tablet tariffs from the Strategy Analytics Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Service (http://www.strategyanalytics.com) reveals a steady growth in tablet tariffs, with an average of six tablet types available from each operator.
"Offering tablet plans and devices is a key part of mobile operator strategy," says Pawel Kmiec of Strategy Analytics. "Of all the plans available from mobile operators, tablet plans now account for almost 40%. Strategy Analytics expects this number to continue to grow. As new devices come onto the market, operators are keen to add them to their portfolio. We have seen a slowdown in the introduction of operator-branded tablets of late, however."
There is much more in the way of 4G-specific tablet plans, too. Vodafone in Germany and Sprint in the US have both recently added 4G tablet plans to their range of offerings. With the scale and speed of 4G rollouts gathering pace, Strategy Analytics predicts a dramatic increase in 4G tablet plans in...
Orangutans at Jungle Island are bananas over the iPad
Miami's Jungle Island is one of several zoos experimenting with computers and apes, letting its six orangutans use an iPad to communicate and as part of a mental stimulus program, reports the "Associated Press." Linda Jacobs, who oversees the program, says she hopes the devices will eventually help
She began letting the orangutans use iPads last summer, based on the suggestion of someone who had used the devices with dolphins, notes the "AP." The software was originally designed for humans with autism and the screen displays pictures of various objects. A trainer then names one of the objects, and the ape presses the corresponding button.

"GoldKey is the world’s first encrypted flash drive to support two-factor authentication using smart cards and Gold-ID in one device," says GoldKey CEO Rog Billings.
It sports a stainless steel case and waterproof epoxy that not seals the internal circuitry water tight, but deters tampering and provides added strength, he adds. Once the encrypted partition is unlocked, it appears as a regular flash drive until it is removed, which completely locks the data.
