IDC: iOS, Android smartphones expand market share
Smartphones powered by the iOS and Android operating systems accounted for more than eight out of ten smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12). According to the "International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker," the mobile operating systems held shares of 59% and 23% respectively of the 152.3 million smartphones shipped in 1Q12.
During the first quarter of 2011, the two operating systems held a combined share of 54.4%. The share gains mean that Android and iOS have successfully distanced themselves from previous market leaders Symbian and BlackBerry, as well as Linux and Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile.
"The popularity of Android and iOS stems from a combination of factors that the competition has struggled to keep up with," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends program. "Neither Android nor iOS were the first to market with some of these features, but the way they made the smartphone...

Apple: we didn't conspire to fix ebook pricing
Apple is rejecting charges that it conspired to fix prices of electronic books, calling the U.S. government's antitrust lawsuit a "fundamentally flawed" endeavor that could discourage competition and harm consumers, reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/NAzQq).
In a filing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan Tuesday, Apple said it didn't conspire with anyone or fix prices for e-books to thwart Amazon's dominance of that market, the article adds. In fact, the company says its entry into the book market has actually fueled demand for ebooks by forcing Amazon and rivals, including Barnes & Noble Inc, to compete more aggressively, including by upgrading e-reader technology.
In April the United States Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, Hachette SA, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin and Simon & Schuster in New York district court, claiming collusion over ebook pricing. Apple, Samsung reach no agreement at meeting of execs

Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung and Shin Jong-kyun, head of the firm’s mobile division, left Seoul Sunday for the United States to meet Apple CEO Tim Cook by order of the Northern District Court of California. This was an attempt -- and, apparently, a futile one -- to settle the patent fight without going into costly legal proceedings.
U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, ordered the company execs to meet face-to-face to try and settle their differences. The general counsels of both companies also were directed to participate in the two-day mediation session to try settle Apple’s claims that Samsung’s smartphones and tablet computers infringe patents covering the design and feel of iPhones and iPads, as well as Samsung’s infringement counterclaims related...

Windows 8 will feature both the Metro interface as well as the traditional Windows desktop layout, while Windows RT will be entirely Metro. This confusion could end up benefiting Apple, which offers a more integrated solution and streamlined product line that will be less intimidating to consumers, Moskowitz opines.
