Apple not on 'Newsweek' list of 'green'...
"Newsweek" has released its list of "green" U.S. companies (http://www.newsweek.com/2010/10/18/green-rankings-us-companies.html) and, strangely, Apple isn't in the top 20. The top five on the list are Dell, HP, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Intel and Sprint Nextel. The environmental ranking of the 500 largest publicly traded companies in America is measured by revenue, market capitalization, and number of employees. "NewsWeek" ranked the biggest publicly traded companies in developed and emerging world markets. The absence of Apple on the list seems a bit strange. The International Data Corporation (IDC), says Apple recycles in 95% of the countries where its products are sold. And last October Greenpeace praised Apple as the first PC maker to completely eliminate hazardous brominated flame retardants and polyvinyl chloride plastic in its new iMac and MacBook.

Count the iPad and Apple is #1 U.S. computer vendor
If you count the iPad as a personal computer -- as I've long claimed should be done -- Apple is now the number one computer maker in the US, notes Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore. He told clients in a note Monday -- as reported by "Fortune" (http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/10/18/what-if-the-ipad-were-a-pc/?secti...) -- the Apple tablet is "driving a rapid, unprecedented shift in the structure of the computing industry." To illustrate that point, Whitmore has taken a chart of domestic PC market shares over the past seven quarters as measured by IDC, which doesn't consider tablets to be personal computers, and recalculated it with the iPad figured in. According to Whitmore, ° The U.S. PC market grew 4% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2010 without the iPad, according to IDC. Include the iPad, as Whitmore feels one ought to, and that growth jumps to 24%. ° Exclude the iPad, and Apple's computer sales grew 24% year-over-year. Include them, and Apple's unit sales soared...

Analyst thinks Apple's financials may disappoint
Apple will announce its latest financial earnings today. And Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster thinks the results may disappoint investors. Why? "Silicon Alley Insider (http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-earnings-2010-10?utm_source=feedbur...) says the analyst told clients that the iPad has a lower profit margin than investors think. Also, supply-constraints have prevented Apple from selling as many iPads as it could have. "Don't expect typical EPS upside due to iPad," Munster says. "The Street is looking for EPS of $4.05. Ahead of Apple in the US market is Dell with 23.1% and HP with 24.3%. Globally, the computer market grew 11% in the third quarter of 2010 (3Q10), nearly 3% below expectations, says IDC. The research group says constrained consumer spending resulted in a tepid back-to-school season but a commercial refresh remained largely on schedule and the overall market improved in September compared to the earlier part of the quarter.
What's more, the market still exhibited positive sequential growth over the second quarter which is the hallmark of third quarter activity, says IDC. Shipments...

Windows iPhone 7 will sync to Macs
If you really care, Windows iPhone 7 will sync to your Mac. When Microsoft failed to announce any Mac software for Windows Phone 7, many people assumed that meant that there would be no way to directly load content from an Apple computer onto the new devices. However, that won't be the case, reports "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-20019432-56.html?part=rss&subj=news&ta...). "Later in 2010 Microsoft will make a public beta available of a tool that allows Windows Phone 7 to sync select content with Mac computers," Microsoft said in a statement.

South Korean lawmakers want Apple to answer iPhone service...
Apple has been summoned by South Korean lawmakers to answer questions about the company’s iPhone- service policy amid complaints from local users, parliamentary officials said. According to "Bloomberg Businessweek" (http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-10-13/apple-summoned-by-korea-lawm...), Farrel Farhoudi, senior director for Apple’s iPhone service, will appear in parliament on Oct. 21 at the request of lawmakers led by You Won Il. South Korean buyers of the iPhone have complained that Apple mostly gives refurbished used phones to customers with faulty devices, instead of providing new handsets, free repairs or refunds, says "Bloomberg." Apple’s local service warranty gives buyers the four options when they have trouble within 14 days of purchase, he said. Sales of the iPhone passed one million within about nine months of its debut in South Korea. KT Corp., the local carrier for the iPhone, said that 1.02 million iPhones were activated as of Aug. 16. Furthermore, KT says it expects...
