Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones (the most ever) for the fiscal 2010 fourth quarter that ended Sept. 25. iPhone sales more than doubled in the Asia/Pacific and Japan regions.

The iPhone saw 91% year-over-year growth. compared to 64% growth for smartphone overall in the quarter (per IDC's stats). The iPhone now has 166 carriers in 89 countries. With the iPhone 4, the Apple smartphone has gone from 60% to nearly 80% of Fortune 500 countries, says Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer. In fiscal 2010, sold over 40 million iPhones -- an increase of 93% year-over-year.

Apple CEO made a surprise appearance at a conference call with the press and analysts about the financial results to tout the iPhone's surprise. He said he wanted to drop by "for our first $20 billion quarter."

Jobs said that Apple has now passed RIM in smartphone sales and "doesn't see them catching us any time soon." He said that Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones compared to 12.1 million Blackberry devices.

And Google? Apple has activated 275,000 iOS devices per day for the past 30 days on average compared to Google's 200,000 Android devices per day, he added. Jobs said there's no solid data on how many Android phones are shipped each quarter.

The Apple CEO says that Google's characterization of the Android OS as "open" and the iOS as "closed" is a "bit disingenuous" and confusing. Plus, open systems don't always win, he added. Jobs said that every iPhone works the same, but that, on the Android, there are multiple hardware and software versions, which is confusing for developers and consumers.
