Apple owners nearly 40% more interested in the iPad than non-...
Even though the iPad doesn’t officially become available for another week, awareness is strong among certain key demographic groups, according to a new report by The NPD Group, a market research company.
The report report found that awareness is highest among current Apple owners, (82%), consumers with $100,000 or greater income (80%), and 18-34 year olds (78%). Only 18% of all consumers surveyed expressed a real interest in owning an iPad while 27% of 18-34 year olds and 24% of Apple owners said they were extremely or very interested.
One of the main reasons Apple owners are interested in the iPad is because it’s an Apple product, says The NPD Group (which is no big surprise, is it?). Thirty-seven percent cited “liking the Apple brand” as a top reason for their interest in the iPad. That tied with “multi-touch screen”, which was also the number one reason driving interest among 18-34 year olds. The 18-34...

Hackers take down iPhone, Safari, IE, Firefox in contest
Hackers took down Apple's iPhone and Safari browser, Microsoft's Internet Explore 8 (IE8) and Mozilla's Firefox within minutes at this week's Pwn2Own contest, reports "Computerworld" (http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9174078/iPhone_Safari_IE8_Firefox...).
The two-man team of Vincenzo Iozzo and Ralf-Philipp Weinmann exploited the iPhone in under five minutes, said a spokeswoman for 3Com TippingPoint, the security company that sponsored the contest. The pair also walked away with US$15,000 in cash, a record prize for the challenge, adds "Computerworld."
Iozzo, an Italian college student, works for Zynamics, a company headed by noted researcher Thomas Dullien. Weinmann is a post-doctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Algorithms, Cryptology and Security at the University of Luxembourg.
Jerome York felt Jobs mis-handled announcements regarding his...
Last week Apple Board member Jerome B. (Jerry) York died from a brain aneurysm. And according to the "Wall Street Journal" (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405274870426650457514193392147604...), he wasn't happy with the way Apple CEO Steve Jobs handled his past illnesses.
The article says he had strong feelings about the way Jobs handled disclosures about his leave of absence for health reasons in January 2009. In an interview with "The Wall Street Journal" last year, York said he almost resigned when told of the seriousness of Jobs's illness. York felt Jobs should have publicly disclosed his health problem three weeks earlier in a news release that announced his decision not to appear at the Macworld trade conference, he adds.
York said the concealment "disgusted" him, adding that the only reason he didn't quit at the time was because he wanted to avoid the uproar that would have occurred once he disclosed his reason. "Frankly, I wish I had resigned then," he told the "Journal...

In the standard 9.5 millimeter-high, two-platter design, the company says the MK7559GSXP HDD incorporates both the industry's highest areal density and capacity at 750GB.
Toshiba also introduced a new three-platter 12.5-millimeter-high platform with the MKxx59GSM series, which offers 750GB and 1TB of storage. These capacity points were predominantly supported by larger form factor 3.5-inch HDDs until the introduction of high-end 2.5-inch solutions.
To deliver these next-generation storage capacities, Toshiba has implemented Advanced Sector Format technology in both families. This technology uses 4K byte-per-sector formatting and improved error-correcting code (ECC) functions, providing maximum data integrity and making efficient use of the storage surface area, says Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing at Toshiba Storage Device...

Wikipedia Suffers Global Outage
Wikipedia posted the below on their blog at:

Global Outage (cooling failure and DNS)
Due to an overheating problem in our European data center many of our servers turned off to protect themselves. As this impacted all Wikipedia and other projects access from European users, we were forced to move all user traffic to our Florida cluster, for which we have a standard quick failover procedure in place, that changes our DNS entries.
However, shortly after we did this failover switch, it turned out that this failover mechanism was now broken, causing the DNS resolution of Wikimedia sites to stop working globally. This problem was quickly resolved, but unfortunately it may take up to an hour before access is restored for everyone, due to caching effects.
We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.
Update: Unfortunately, for many, this outage seems to have lasted longer than an hour. It appears that many ISPs...

Additionally, the study demonstrates that consumers want more access to information and work applications on their mobile devices, pointing to continuing challenges for businesses in enabling employees to effectively work on the go.
Sybase says the role of new tablet devices such as the iPad has been a subject of great debate recently, and while the study shows that entertainment activities such as watching video and playing games are some...

Maj. Gen. Nick Justice, Research, Development and Engineering Command commanding general and key members of his staff traveled to Apple headquarters on March 5. Apple officials reportedly gave the Army group tours of its laboratories and other facilities and talked about some examples of where the military is already using Apple technology. The Army's research and development command is evaluating commercial hand-held solutions such as iPad, iPhone, iPod, iMac, and MacBook platforms.
"The Army is moving away from big-green-box solutions and toward those that will adapt along with our warfighters on the battlefield," Justice says. He adds that the Army recognized the billions of dollars invested by industry to develop its...
