iPad developer support continues to soar
Since Apple introduced the iPad in late January, Flurry Analytics (http://www.flurry.com/) -- a cross-platform mobile application analytics provider -- says it's noticed a significant spike in developer support, indicating early excitement for the promise of the device.
As April 3 draws near, developers continue to develop for the iPad at a fever pitch. Today Apple added a toggle switch to its online iTunes store that allows consumers to view apps available specifically developed for the iPad. About 2,000 iPad apps were listed upon Flurry's initial count.
Comparing the two pie charts from Flurry, the first notable difference is that iPad made up 22% of new projects starts within Flurry over the last 60 days. In March, over 3,000 unique applications were created within Flurry. A second point of interest is that Android's share of new project starts has decreased from 18% to 10%.
However, it shouldn't be concluded that Android developer support is on the decline, say the folks at...

iSuppli: iPad sales to hit seven million in 2010, triple by 2012
The iPad's attractive design, compelling applications and multi-touch capability will help to offset the omission of Adobe Flash from the device and send demand soaring in 2010 and beyond, according to a preliminary forecast by iSuppli Corp. (http://www.isuppli.com).
Worldwide iPad sales are expected to amount to 7.1 million units in 2010. Sales will double to 14.4. million in 2011 and nearly triple to 20.1 million in 2012, says iSuppli.
Sales in 2010 will be driven by early adopters and others attracted to the iPad's unique touch screen-baed user interface, the research group says. In 2011 and 2012, iPad sales will be driven up by a range of factors, including a flood of new applications, improved functionality and declining prices.
What's more, iSuppli reps say this forecast is "conservative." Factors that could boost sales beyond their preliminary expectations are swift feature enhancements and the early addition of Flash support.

An iPad edition of Office would likely be built by a unit within Microsoft’s consumer business that creates versions of Office that work with Apple’s Macintosh personal computers. Kristen Woody, a spokesman for that unit, told "Bloomberg" it “doesn’t have anything to share at this time.”

iPhone leads smartphone makers in customer satisfaction
Overall satisfaction among smartphone and traditional handset owners whose phones are equipped with touch screens is considerably higher than satisfaction of owners of phones that have other input mechanisms, according to a new report by J.D. Power and Associates (http://www.JDPower.com). And the iPhone leads the pack in customer satisfaction.
Among smartphone owners whose device has a touch screen, satisfaction averages 771 on a 1,000-point scale, nearly 40 index points higher than among those whose smartphone uses other input methods, such as a text keyboard. Currently, slightly more than one-half of owners indicate their smartphone has a touch screen for navigation. USITC to investigate Apple's complaint against HTC
A U.S. trade agency will investigate Apple's patent-infringement claims against Taiwan’s HTC Corp. to determine if its phones using Google’s Android operating system should be banned from the U.S.
Last month Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.
As many as 10 of those violations involve the Nexus One, Apple said in a complaint submitted to the ITC. The Delaware lawsuit, however, didn't specify the HTC-made phones that allegedly violated Apple's patents.
In a statement (http://www.usitc.gov/press_room/news_release/2010/er0331hh2.htm), the USITC says: "The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has voted to institute an investigation of certain personal data and mobile communications devices and related software. The products at issue in this...
Analyst: Apple selling every iPad it can build
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster tells clients that his initial estimates of 900,000 iPads sold in the June quarter and 2.7 million in calendar year 2010 “may prove to be conservative" and that Apple is selling every iPad it can build.
As reported by All Things D (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Munster-Apple-is-Selling-allthingsd-418258...), Munster thinks Apple will sell between 200,000 and 300,000 iPads this weekend -- comparable to the 270,000 first gen iPhones it sold at launch. And he thinks the chances are good that the company will sell out of the tablet device.
“When Apple began taking pre-orders customers could pre-order for home delivery on April 3 or in-store pickup on April 3,” Munster told clients. “A week before the launch (on March 27) the company pushed back the shipping date to April 12 and ended the in-store reservation program for the launch. And in preparation for the launch, on March 31 Apple retail stores began calling those with iPad pickup reservations to...

The Find My iPad feature works best if your iPad includes both Wi-Fi and 3G,...
Swiss court shoots down Apple's iPhone trademark appeal
Uh oh. Apple has asked for reconsideration of its trademark application for the word “iPhone” by the Swiss Federal Administrative Court. They were denied, with the court maintaining that the term is a non-distinctive word for which Apple could not be granted a trademark.
The Court rejected the application for the class 9 goods on the grounds that "iPhone" will be immediately understood by consumers as describing a telephone with Internet or information technology-related functions, and accordingly represents a non-distinctive, descriptive indication.
Apple has argued that the prefix "i" can have numerous different meanings, all of which seem equally likely to the addressed market circles. The Managing Intellectual Property site (http://www.managingip.com/Article/2456399/IPHONE-mark-held-inherently-no...) says that, according to Apple's argument, the numerous possible meanings of the mark will evoke various different associations in the addresses, resulting in uncertainty as to the...

“While HTML5 video dealt more broadly with opening up standards for video and providing an alternative to Flash, HTML6 will focus specifically on making those interactive, sense-driven aspects of video that we have only imagined a firm reality,” says Greg Kostello, founder and chief technical officer at VMIX.
In addition to addressing minor data-logging and SEO challenges found in HTML5, Kostello identified a handful of consumer features that he expects clients and their audiences will welcome with HTML6:

Study: iPad could eventually replace Windows computers for some
According to a new poll conducted by ORC (http://www.opinionresearch.com), an Infogroup Company, the vast majority of US consumers (71%) are familiar with Apple’s iPad. Six percent plan on buying one within a year, equating to a sale of about seven million units, and 1% said they will purchase one as soon as it becomes available, which would translate to a sale of approximately one million units.
The findings in ORC’s survey correspond closely with market analyst predictions that five million iPads will be sold in 2010. Based on the results of ORC’s research, it is clear that a significant number of tech-hungry consumers are interested in an iPad in the short-term, but what does this mean for the long-term success of the product?
“Adoption of new technologies is often a slow and gradual process,” says Kevin Wood, vice president and senior analyst with ORC’s technology practice. “It wasn’t that long ago when the Blackberry smartphone was only used by executives and road warriors....

Music industry sources: no iTunes Replay before the third...
Music industry sources told "CNET" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-20001480-261.html) this week Apple has informed label managers that a streaming music service is unlikely to be ready before the third quarter.
Some had hoped such a service might arrive when Apple unveiled the iPad tablet in January, but it didn't. "CNET" says that same month, Apple executives spoke to the major record labels about enabling people to store their music on the company's servers and access their songs with web-enabled devices. At that point, music-industry insiders speculated that Apple's new service might debut early this year.
"Besides a later-than-hoped-for start to Apple's streaming, all of this also means that music -- which has typically played an important role in most of Apple's culture-changing devices -- will be bumped to the sidelines with the iPad," says "CNET."
Last year Apple has bought Lala, which, in September 2008, unveiled "the first and only free fully licensed service to instantly...

AT&T, Apple reportedly working on network issues
AT&T executives have reportedly been working with Apple to resolve the issues regarding its highly criticized network issues. iPhone users have long complained about dropped calls and slow data connections.
Now, as rumors circulate (again) that Verizon iPhone is in the works, AT&T is reportedly working with Apple on improving network communication. AT&T executives flew to Apple's campus last year to assure Apple CEO Steve Jobs that they were working to resolve the issues and instruct Apple handset designers on wireless networking, AT&T Chief Technology Officer John Donovan told "The New York Times" (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405270230473910457515407278419861...).
In mid-December, AT&T executives set up a 100-day plan to dramatically improve the company's network in densely-populated cities, he said. It's long been understood that AT&T's exclusivity deal with Apple would eventually end. If that end coincides with the release of a Verizon iPhone...
Greenpeace criticizes iPad, cloud computing
In a new report "Cloud Computing and its Contribution to Climate Change," the environment group, Greenpeace (http://www.greenpeace.org), has criticized the iPad, cloud computing and "IT's growing carbon problem."
"Here's part of what they have to say: "Whether you actually want an iPad or not, there is no doubt that it is a harbinger of things to come. The iPad relies upon cloud-based computing to stream video, download music and books, and fetch email. Already, millions access the 'cloud' to make use of online social networks, watch streaming video, check email and create documents, and store thousands of digital photos online on popular web-hosted sites like Flickr and Picasa.
"The cloud is growing at a time when climate change and reducing emissions from energy use is of paramount concern. With the growth of the cloud, however, comes an increasing demand for energy. For all of this content to be delivered to us in real time, virtual mountains of video, pictures and other data must...
Encoding.com adds HTTP live streaming encoding for iPad, iPhone...
Encoding.com, a global provider of studio-class online video encoding services, has announced support for HTTP Live Streaming for Apple’s iPhone, iPod touch, and the iPad mobile devices.
HTTP streaming enables publishers to provide users with a better video experience by continuously adapting the video stream in real-time to match the user’s available bandwidth, says Encoding.com CEO Jeremy Farber. Encoding.com is excited to bring Apple’s new capability to the five hundred customers currently in its roster, he adds.
Starting with iPhone OS 3.0 and QuickTime X, video producers can deliver streaming audio and video over HTTP from an ordinary web server for playback on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad mobile devices. This is called HTTP Live Streaming and supports both live broadcasts and video on demand. Because it uses HTTP, most edge servers, media distributors, caching systems, routers and firewalls support this type of streaming.
