RipCode: we'll bring Flash to the iPhone OS
RipCode (http://www.ripcode.com/) says its newest product, the TransAct Transcoder V6 can intercept Adobe Flash-based file or live video requests and convert them to a container, video codec, and audio codec accepted by the Apple devices -- all transparently to the end user device and without the need for any pre-transcoding or device-based client.
RipCode CEO Brendon Mills says the iPad is poised to further accelerate and expand the mobile video device market just as the iPhone has over the last several years. However, one of its noted shortcomings has been Apple’s lack of support for Flash video playback, given the dominant position of Flash in professionally generated entertainment, sports and news content. HTML5 has been purported to address this dilemma by introducing Apple device applications that are simply "thin clients" communicating back to a web site hosting and subsequently delivering Flash files without a device-based player, but HTML5 isn't yet widely adopted, Mills says...

Adobe no longer investing in Flash for iPhone OS
Mike Chambers, Adobe’s Principal Product Manager for developer relations for the Flash Platform, says in a blog (http://www.mikechambers.com/blog/2010/04/20/on-adobe-flash-cs5-and-iphon...) that Adobe is abandoning its efforts to bring Flash to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
He notes that in Apple's latest draft of their iPhone OS developer program license that Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).
Chambers says that, essentially, this has the effect of restricting applications built with a number of technologies, including Unity, Titanium,...

Apple warns against jailbreaking the iPhone
Apple has posted an article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743) warning against the jailbreaking of an iPhone. The article is about adverse issues experienced by customers who have made unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS (this hacking process is often called "jailbreaking").
Apple says that issues that have been encountered include instability, disruption of services, and compromised security. "As designed by Apple, the iPhone OS ensures that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operate reliably. Some customers have not understood the risks of installing software that makes unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS ('jailbreaking') on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch," Apple says. Sorry, but the Apple TV is still a hobby
Apple TV units were up 34% year over year for Apple's second fiscal quarter of 2010 -- but, sorry Apple TV fans, it's still classified as a "hobby" by Apple.
In speaking with the press and analysts, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said that the Apple TV's niche simply isn't comparable to the big computer, MP3 player and smartphone markets in which the Mac, iPod and iPhone compete. That said, it's still doing well relative to its size, he added.
On a brighter note, "a number of us love the Apple TV and use the product, and believe there's something there," Cook added.
Apple's retail business sees revenue increase 38% year-over...
During the its fiscal 2010 second quarter that ended March 27, Apple saw its retail store chain increase revenue by 22%. That's up 38% year-over-year.
Apple had an average of 284 stores open during the quarter. The stores saw 47 million visitors in the second fiscal quarter of 2010 as compared to 39.1 million in the second fiscal quarter of 2009. The average revenue per store was $5.9 million, compared to $5.5 million in the 2009 quarter.
Apple will open 40-50 new retail stores before the end of the year. Half of them will be international stores, with locations including London, Paris and Shanghai. The latter will get two stores, and Apple plans on having 20 retail stores in China by the end of 2011.
The retail stores sold approximately 606,000 Macs. And, as always, in talking with analysts about the fiscal results, Apple Chief Financial Officer said that half of those sales are to folks who've never bought a Mac before.
iPod unit sales flat, but iPod revenue up 12%
Analysts expected iPod sales to dip in the latest fiscal quarter, but they remained basically flat (down 1% year-over-year). Apple sold 10.89 million iPods during the quarter, generating revenue of US$1.7 billion (that's a total revenue increase of 12%).
The iTunes Store had its best quarter ever, bringing in sales of $1.1 billion. In talking with analysts on the latest financials, Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said that the iPod's share of the US market remains at over 70% and that the Apple device continues to gain ground internationally in Australia, Canada, Japan and the UK, among other regions.
The iPod touch is still a best seller with with unit sales increasing 63% year-over-year. It's teh strongest iPod revenue growth rate in last two years, says Oppenheimer.
So did the iPad have any affect on iPod touch sales? Apple Chief Operating Officer said that the announcement of the tablet device has had no discernible affect on either iPod or Mac sales. However, "we...
iPhone sales increase way above industry average
In a press conference regarding its latest quarterly financials, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said that sales of 8.75% of iPhones in the latest fiscal quarter was more than three times the IDC estimate of 41% growth of overall smartphone growth for the period, as estimated by the IDC research group.
And the growth has nothing to do with lower pricing? The average selling price of iPhone is still approximately US$600. Oppenheimer also touted the upcoming iPhone OS 4, saying that customers and developers both were excited by the upcoming 100-plus new features.
Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook acknowledged the "staggering growth" of the iPhone globally. For example, Apple saw 474% growth in Asia Pacific year-over-year and iPhone revenue up $1.3 billion in China. Cook said that the addition of eight carriers also helped.
Mac sales grow 33% year-over-year; desktops up 40%
In a press conference regarding its latest quarterly financials, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said Mac sales were up 20% in America alone, representing a 26% increase in revenue.
Apple sold 2.94 million Macs during the quarter, representing a 33% unit increase over the same quarter in 2009. Worldwide Mac sales were up 3%, increasing revenue by 49%. Asia Pacific was the biggest market; Macs sales there were up 67%, garnering a revenue increase of 184%.
Overall Macs brought in $5.4 billion in revenue -- $1.7 billion from desktop sales and $2.8 billion. Desktop sales grew 40% from the second quarter of 2009 -- a 45% increase in revenue. Laptop sales grew 28% year-over-year, seeing revenue rise 17%.
Your next textbook could be an iPad
On March 30, Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania announced that all students will receive a 13″ MacBook laptop and an iPad. Seton Hill is not the only university embracing the iPad: George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon will offer incoming freshmen a choice of a new MacBook or the iPad.
Last fall, Princeton University conducted a pilot program, giving Amazon Kindles to 50 students. Early feedback indicated that many “were dissatisfied and uncomfortable with the devices.”
Complaints centered around the inability of the device to function in many of the same ways that students interact with textbooks, including bookmarking pages, highlighting text, affixing sticky notes or other marks. Many of these same complaints would certainly apply to Apple’s iPad. So, why is Seton Hill giving iPads to incoming students?
According to the university, it is “training students of all learning styles and abilities to be better researchers, better at compiling and organizing data, and...

Analyst: Apple might be eyeing AMD acquisition
There are rumors that Apple and AMD execs are talking about the former using the chips of the latter in upcoming products. Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group, even thinks there's a slim chance that something more could be in the works.
Even though there's a team within Intel is dedicated solely to Apple, if Apple did decide to switch, however, the AMD microprocessors might be more suitable for Apple since the chips favor graphics over central processing units, he told "MacNewsWorld" (http://www.macnewsworld.com/rsstory/69816.html?wlc=1271794909).
If Apple were to dump Intel, it might actually be in the market to buy AMD, Enderle suggested. Apple is already making its own processor for the iPad, he pointed out, and it might be looking for more vertical integration. "AMD is relatively cheap, and Apple could afford to buy it," Enderle told "MacNewsWorld."
Jobs gets credit for helping promote California donor bill
On Wednesday the California State Senate's health committee will review a bill that, if passed, will make California the first state in the nation to create a live donor registry for kidney transplants. The bill will also require California drivers to decide whether they want to be organ donors when they renew their drivers' licenses.
Despite California State Senate Bill 1395's near universal support, the ideas behind the bill had languished for years on the desk of Senator Elaine Alquist, according to the "SAI Business Insider" (http://www.businessinsider.com/how-steve-jobs-got-sick-2010-04?utm_sourc...). The article says 'The bill exists today -- and the law will, in all likelihood, exist in the future -- thanks to Steve Jobs's illness last year and the huge, expensive effort it took for him to find a liver donor."
At a dinner in December Jobs sat next to Maria Shriver, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife, the whole story of his liver transplant, according to "SAI...
