Apple's MagSafe gets safer
Apple's MagSafe power adapter has gotten safer, according to a "Wired" post (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/04/apple-makes-magsafe-magsafer/#ixz...). The company has updated MagSafe tips for the 85 Watt adapters which come with the 15 and 17-inch MacBooks, and the 65 Watt versions for the 13-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro.
"Wired" says the tip is aluminum and puts the plug in parallel with the cable instead of at right-angles, just like that of the MacBook Air. However, with this new design the aluminum extends past the rectangular tip and into a cable-coddling tube. This tube alone should fix a major failing point of the adapters, says "Wired."
Almost a year ago, a lawsuit was filed seeking class action status and accusing Apple of neglecting a flaw in the MagSafe power connector for its laptops that might not only cause a break but could trigger sparks, forcing customers to buy replacements and even creating a potential fire hazard. The joint complaint from Tim Broad, Naotaka...
Apple overtakes Microsoft in terms of market capitalization
"MarketWatch" (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/apple-passes-microsoft-for-second-place...) is reporting that Apple, as of Thursday, overtook Microsoft and became the second-largest company, in terms of market capitalization, on the S&P 500 .
Apple trails Exxon Mobil, according to Standard & Poor's index services unit. However, "MarketWatch" notes that the S&P 500 is float-adjusted, so it doesn't use the full market basis for Microsoft. Apple's float-adjusted market cap reached US$241.5 billion, surpassing Microsoft Corp.'s index market value of $239.5 billion, said Standard & Poor's. Exxon still remains in the top spot on the S&P 500 with a market cap of more than $300 billion.
What is market capitalization? It's an estimation of the value of a business obtained by multiplying the number of shares outstanding by the current price of a share.

One of the hot rumors of the week is that Apple is considering buying ARM, a company whose chip designs are in the iPhone. But the US company's head honcho is squashing those rumors.
CEO Warren East says that, with ARM's market capitalization at more than £3bn why fork out a fortune to own it when Apple and others can license the designs at a fraction of that? United Kingdom, France, India among cheapest for mobile...
Where are the best deals for mobile broadband? Comparing mobile data pricing in a number of countries, ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) found that the UK, France and India have among the world's lowest prices for mobile broadband plans. In India for example, where 3G mobile broadband services launched in the middle of 2009, an unlimited download plan costs just over US$17 per month.
“ABI Research expects emerging markets with low Internet penetration to price mobile broadband aggressively to drive usage,” says ABI Research analyst Bhavya Khanna. “However, in developed markets the widespread use of data dongles has created strains on mobile networks; and one could see data plans change to throttle data consumption.”
Operators in some countries are already using this approach, limiting data to 5 GB or even as low as 3 GB per month, even for their most expensive plans.
Vice President of Forecasting Jake Saunders, adds, “Another consumer concern is confusing overage charges...

Apple store employees canned after data mix-up
Apple store employees canned after data mix-up
Several employees of the Legacy Village (Ohio) Apple store have been fired after personal information from a repaired computer was mistakenly transferred to another customer’s Mac during a data restore operation, reports "ifo AppleStore" (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/2010/04/20/several-employees-fired-after...).
According to several sources, the stores have a standard procedure and method of backing up and restoring hard drive data from customer computers brought in for service. The procedure ensures that data from one back-up is completely deleted after the restore to maintain privacy of all customer information.
"In this case, an employee backed up a customer’s computer to an external hard drive last month and performed the necessary service," says "ifo AppleStore. "However, a previous customer back-up had not been deleted from that hard drive. When the employee restored the data to the repaired computer, it included the back-up...
Google purchases company founded by P.A. Semi defectors
The Apple-Google competition just gets more interesting. Google has purchased startup firm Agnilux, a San Jose company founded by a number of defectors from P.A. Semi, the chip company Apple bought in 2008, according to a "peHUB" report (http://www.pehub.com/69556/google-buys-stealth-hardware-startup-agnilux/).
On April 22, 2008, it was made public that Apple had agreed to buy a boutique microprocessor design company called PA Semi for US$278 million. The company was known for its design of sophisticated, low-power chips.
Many of P.A. Semi’s chip developers stuck with Apple, but others -- including some system-level folks -- launched a stealth startup called Agnilux, funding it with proceeds from the Apple acquisition, says "peHUB." The article adds that Agnilux previously held strategic investment talks with companies like Cisco, Microsoft and Texas Instruments.
"We have not yet been able to confirm pricing terms, although assume it must have been a big deal to convince the Agnilux...
Analyst thinks Apple's next big thing will be a video...
Apple's next big thing may be a video platform that combines cameras in the next versions of the iPhone and iPad with the giant data center the company's building in North Carolina, Ezra Gottheil, senior analyst with Technology Business Research, told clients today -- and as reported by "Computerworld" (http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9175894/Apple_s_next_big_thing_Vi...).
During a quarterly earnings conference call with analysts Tuesday, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer cited "future product transitions" as a contributing factor to the anticipated decline from a 42% margin for the year's first quarter to a 36% margin for the quarter ending June 30. Gottheil thinks that Apple is ready to make a major move into video, and based his bet on a series of clues in the company's upcoming hardware, as well as the US$1 billion data center in North Carolina that's now hiring personnel.
Last year it was announced that Apple would build a data center in Catawba County on the...
Extensis developing new product to support web fonts
Extensis (http://www.extensis.com), a division of Celartem, has begun testing a new web font service that enables commercial web designers to incorporate custom fonts into web sites.
For years, web designers have been very limited in how they can use typography on the web, says Celartem CEO Osamu Ikeda. Previously, font use on the Web was limited to the few standard fonts installed on a reader’s machine, he adds. For typographic flexibility, designers most often have resorted to static text images in their designs. But the tradeoff was steep: this text was not easily updated, and could not be indexed or searched.
Due to recent technology improvements, web browsers now support the use of custom fonts on websites (via @font-face tags). The challenge is that different browsers support different web font formats, and font vendor licenses generally don't allow users to simply put fonts loose on a web server, because of concerns about piracy. This is where Extensis comes in, says Ikeda...
