MONKEYmedia sues Apple for patent infringement
Another day, another lawsuit. A company called MONKEYmedia has filed a lawsuit against Apple for infringing claims in three of MONKEYmedia's "Seamless Contraction" patents. The company says Apple’s infringement involves its user interfaces for document summarization, RSS readers and video players that can display multiple versions of text and/or audiovisual content.
"We can sit by and watch Apple continue to use our patented inventions without paying, or we can do something about it," said Eric Bear, MONKEYmedia's CEO. "Synergy between inventors and manufacturers is healthy, and we love that Apple believes in our technology. We simply prefer open communications and fair compensation."
The lawsuit was filed in the Western District of Texas -- Austin Division. Austin-based MONKEYmedia is a privately held user interface design studio turned intellectual property licensing boutique, founded in 1994 by Janna Buckmaster Bear and Eric Gould Bear, a Microsoft and Yahoo! alumnus. Its...
What’s the next game-changing consumer device?
What do connected cars, e-book readers, smartphones and HDTVs have in common? They have all been radically transformed by connectivity. And in the next decade, driven by both consumer demand and market opportunities, many more connected devices will emerge, according to a new report by the Yankee Group (http://www.yankeegroup.com).
Data from Yankee Group’s Anywhere Consumer: 2009 U.S. Survey indicates that 55% of consumers highly value connectivity in e-book readers, 50% in MP3 players and 40% in HDTVs. But how can device makers distinguish the next big thing from the also-rans? Yankee Group’s new model evaluates 16 CE devices against 10 business and connectivity attributes, and groups the devices into three segments:
° Anywhere Target Devices, like e-book readers and HDTVs, have the most untapped potential.
° Anywhere Impaired Devices, like game consoles, digital cameras and portable navigation devices, have only a marginal capacity to innovate.
° Anywhere Has-Beens, like computers,...

Hulu not ready to move to HTML5 yet
>Hulu, an online site for watching television shows, says HTML 5, the standard for online video Apple is promoting over Flash, isn't ready for prime time, reports "All Things D" (http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100513/hulu-still-not-coming-to-your-i...).
The article says that Hulu product head Eugene Wei has this to say: "We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs. Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements."
HTML5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML (HyperText...

C4 conference canned; Apple blamed
New restrictions that Apple added to its iPhone software developer kit (SDK) have led an independent programmer to cancel a conference devoted to Mac programming and computer science, according to a "CNET" report (http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20004869-264.html).
Jonathan "Wolf" Rentzsch announced Wednesday in an online post (http://rentzsch.tumblr.com/post/592949476/c4-release) that he had canceled the C4 conference after four years organizing it because of new wording in a section of the iPhone OS 4.0 software developer kit.
He wrote: "With resistance to Section 3.3.1 so scattershot and meek, it's become clear that I haven't made the impact I wanted with C4. It's also clear my interests and the Apple programming community's interests are farther apart than I had hoped."
"... By itself Section 3.3.1 wasn't enough to cause me to quit C4. I've weathered Apple lying to me and their never-ending series of autocratic App Store shenanigans. But unlike previous issues such as the...

Adobe founders: Apple could undermine the next chapter of the...
Adobe founders Chuck Genschke and John Warnock have posted an online letter (http://www.adobe.com/choice/openmarkets.html) in regards to the company's ongoing feud ... er, debate ... with Apple on the merits -- or lack thereof -- of Flash.
Here's a sampling of the letter: "When markets are open, anyone with a great idea has a chance to drive innovation and find new customers. Adobe's business philosophy is based on a premise that, in an open market, the best products will win in the end — and the best way to compete is to create the best technology and innovate faster than your competitors.
"That, certainly, was what we learned as we launched PostScript and PDF, two early and powerful software solutions that work across platforms. We openly published the specifications for both, thus inviting both use and competition. In the early days, PostScript attracted 72 clone makers, but we held onto our market leadership by out-innovating the pack. More recently, we've done the same thing...

ABI Research: 2012 will Be a 'bellwether' year for 4G
ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com) has been tracking cities and population coverage for 4G for the past year. At the end of 2009 there were more than 170 802.16e carriers across 65 countries, covering 480 million people. That number is projected to cross the one billion mark by the fourth quarter of 2012 (4Q 2012).
USB dongles have been an excellent vehicle to prime the market along with CPE and laptops, says the research group, but mobile handsets will be essential to the success of WiMAX. Yota, Sprint, and Clearwire have already started beefing up their lineups with models from HTC and Samsung.
Meanwhile, mobile operators are seeking out LTE licenses. Twenty carriers will launch by 4Q 2010. Population coverage lags WiMAX but will catch up, reaching 600 million people by 4Q 2012. LTE coverage will start in urban hotspots but carriers indicate they will push coverage rapidly in order to handle the increasing mobile data wave.
The 4G market could well have 150 million...

Google-AdMob decision postponed due to Apple-Quattro deal
A decision due this week on whether to prevent Google from purchasing the AdMob advertising network has been postponed because of complications created by Apple's aggressive foray into online advertising, according to a report in the "New York Times" (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/12/technology/12google.html).
The Federal Trade Commission (FCC) got a two-week extension from Google and AdMob for its review of Google’s US$750 million acquisition, two people briefed on the review process told the "Times." The agency wants to use the additional time, in part, to better understand the competitive effects of Apple’s purchase of Quattro Wireless, an AdMob rival, and Apple’s impending introduction of its new iAds mobile advertising system, the article adds.
Google, which derives 99% of its revenue from online ads, announced in November its intention to purchase AdMob, one of the world's largest mobile ad networks, for $750 million. The deal immediately raised antitrust concerns.
It was...

Study: Mobile touch we expanding by over 230% annually
Taptu (http://www.taptu.com), a search and discovery engine that indexes touch screen content, reveals in its second quarterly report that the mobile touch web has grown 35% since last quarter, which represents a 232% annual growth rate.
This puts its growth rate ahead of the Apple App Store, currently showing an annual growth of 144%, but behind the Android Market growing at an annual rate of 403%, albeit from a smaller base. The report, which covers January 2010-April 2010, also shows mobile touch web sites rose to 440,100 from 326,600 in January.
At this current run rate, the report predicts that the mobile touch web will increase to 1.1 million sites by the end of the year, nearly twice Taptu’s original forecast, and nearly a full year ahead of its January prediction, fueled in part by the continued consumer love affair with touch screen phones, and even more importantly the rising sales of mid-range touch-enabled devices.
