Apple holding education event on Jan. 19 in NYC
Apple has announced a Jan. 19 education event to be held next Thursday, Jan. 19, at 10 am (Eastern) in New York City at the Guggenheim Museum. Apple has released no other info, but according to "All Things D" (http://macte.ch/RD2wJ), it's likely that Apple plans to beef up its iBook app and iBookstore, which lags behind the Kindle's offering. Perhaps the iBookstore and iBook app will be available on the Mac at long last,so you'll be able to purchase books on any OS X or iOS device and have it "pushed" to all your other devices via iCloud. Apple will probably announce a plethora of new book titles. Don't be surprised to see the company make a major push into the digital textbook realm, promoting the iPad and iTextbooks as a less expensive alternative to pricey high school and (especially) college texts. Also look for Apple’s to promote self-publishing. There are self-publishing offerings from Barnes & Noble and Amazon, and Apple doesn't want to be left behind. Apple's option will...

Spanish tablet maker accuses Apple of extortion
Another day, another lawsuit. Nuevas Tecnologías y Energías Catalá, a small Spanish tablet computer maker and one of the few firms to beat Apple in court, is now accusing Apple of extortion. Last November Nueva successfully defended its Android-based tablet computers (marketed under the label NT-K) in court. The company also accused Apple of abusive anticompetitive behavior. "What makes this is even more noteworthy is the fact that Apple asserted the same design-related right -- a so-called Community design -- with which it won two injunctions against Samsung in Germany (one related to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and another one related to the Galaxy Tab 7.7) but lost in the Netherlands (where an injunction was granted only against certain Samsung smartphones and based on a technical patent, not a design-related right)," "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/oRMib) noted at the time. Last year Apple alleged Nueva's tablet was a forged iPad and convinced custom officials to impound shipments of the...

Apple confirms acquisition of flash storage maker
Apple has confirmed its purchase of Israel's Anobit, a maker of flash storage technology, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/IlFTM). Apple apparently paid upwards of US$500 million, although the company hasn't elaborated on what it paid. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” Apple spokesperson Steve Dowling told "Bloomberg." Anobit has developed a chip that enhances flash drive performance through signal processing, the article adds. The chip is already incorporated in Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad and the MacBook Air. The Israel-based "Calcalist" publication says Apple is interested in Anobit's technology to increase and enhance the memory volume and performance of its devices. The chip could double the memory volume in the new iPads and MacBooks. Apple now has a guaranteed steady supply of high-performance controllers made by Anobit that make the NAND flash used in its mobile devices, especially...

The company also contributed $14,700 to his 401(K) account and paid life-insurance premiums worth $1,820.
