Apple: user permission required for apps to access contact data
Apple has issued a statement regarding reports that some iOS apps have been accessing, transmitting and storing user contact data -- such as that in Address Book -- without explicit permission.
Reports also note that some apps were uploading users’ Address Book to company servers without telling the user it was happening. No longer, it seems.
"Apps that collect or transmit a user’s contact data without their prior permission are in violation of our guidelines," Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr told "AllThingsD" (http://macte.ch/eNu0g). "We’re working to make this even better for our customers, and as we have done with location services, any app wishing to access contact data will require explicit user approval in a future software release."
FLA: iPad/iPhone plant conditions better than average
"Reuters" (http://macte.ch/XTd0I) reports that working conditions at Chinese manufacturing plants where iPads and iPhones are made are far better than those at garment factories or other facilities elsewhere in the country, according to the head of a non-profit agency investigating the plants.
The Fair Labor Association (FLA) announced on Feb. 13 that it was beginning a study of the working conditions of Apple's top eight suppliers in China, following reports of worker suicides, a plant explosion and slave-like conditions at one of those suppliers, Foxconn Technology Group. Auret van Heerden, president of the FLA offered no immediate conclusions on the working conditions, but he noted that boredom and alienation could have contributed to the stress that led some workers to take their own lives, says "Reuters."
As part of its independent assessment, the FLA will interview thousands of employees about working and living conditions including health and safety, compensation, working hours...
Congress has questions for Apple on developer data access
House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman and Commerce Manufacturing and Trade Subcommittee Chair G.K. Butterfield sent a letter to Apple on Wednesday, following complaints that a smartphone application dubbed Path was collecting address book data and storing it on remote servers without permission, reports "The Next Web."
While Path has purported been tweaked to address the issue, Butterfield and Waxman have noticed that parts of Apple’s iOS developer website says Apple provides a comprehensive collection of tools and frameworks for storing, accessing and sharing data. So they wonder whether Apple requires apps to request user permission before transmitting data about a user, according to "The Next Web."
Butterfield and Waxman have come up with a list of questions they want Apple to answer about all this. You can find the questions at http://macte.ch/SQSDW .

Apple to bankruptcy judge: may I please sue Kodak again?
Apple has asked a bankruptcy judge for permission to sue Eastman Kodak over allegations it’s infringing patents that Apple says cover technologies used in printers, digital cameras and digital picture frames, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/JBIpl).
The article adds that Apple said in a filing Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York that it intends to file a complaint against Kodak at the International Trade Commission and a corresponding suit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan based on patent-infringement claims. The suit will seek an order blocking Kodak’s infringement, according to the filing.
This is part of an ongoing battle. In January Kodak filed lawsuits against Apple and HTC Corp., alleging the infringement of certain Kodak patents relating to digital imaging technology. A complaint filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) specifically claimed that certain of Apple’s iPhones, iPads, and iPods, and certain of HTC’s smartphones and tablets infringe...
Online ads for the iPad in China disappear
Two Chinese B2C e-commerce sites, Amazon China and Suning.com have removed the iPad from sale "in an apparent move to avoid implication in the Apple versus Proview legal battle over the use of the iPad name in mainland China, reports " Asia Tech News (http://macte.ch/n11Vv).
A search for "iPad," "iPad 2" or "any relevant permutation" yields results only for accessories for (or rivals of) Apples tablet on both those sites. However, the removal doesn't seem to be the result of a request from Proview Technology, which is laying claim to the iPad trademark and which has been seeking to halt both imports and exports of the device in China, notes "MacRumors" (http://www.macrumors.com).
China's Proview Technology, a tech firm claiming to own the iPad trademark, plans to seek a ban on shipments of the Apple tablet in and out of China. The company triumphed over Apple in a lawsuit in southern China late last year and is looking to enforce the court ruling. Proview is petitioning Chinese...
Apple now the third largest mobile phone vendor worldwide
Worldwide smartphone sales to end users soared to 149 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, a 47.3% increase from the fourth quarter of 2010, according to Gartner. Total smartphone sales in 2011 reached 472 million units and accounted for 31% of all mobile devices sales, up 58% from 2010.
Smartphone volumes during the quarter rose due to record sales of Apple iPhones. As a result, Apple became the third-largest mobile phone vendor in the world, overtaking LG. Apple also became the world's top smartphone vendor, with a market share of 23.8% in the fourth quarter of 2011, and the top smartphone vendor for 2011 as a whole, with a 19% market share.
"Western Europe and North America led most of the smartphone growth for Apple during the fourth quarter of 2011," says Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner. "In Western Europe the spike in iPhone sales in the fourth quarter saved the overall smartphone market after two consecutive quarters of slow sales."

Apple cuts iAd pricing once more
Apple is once again cutting the minimum amount it charges advertisers to run a campaign on its iAd mobile ad system and boosting the amount it pays mobile app developers, reports "Ad Age" (http://macte.ch/XVbil).
iAds combine the emotion of TV advertising with the interactivity of Internet advertising, according to the late Steve Jobs, when he introduced the service in 2010. He said iAds, which are built into iOS 4 and later, allow users to stay within their app while engaging with the ad, even while watching a video, playing a game or using in-ad purchase to download an app or buy iTunes content.
Advertisers will now have to spend justUS $100,000 for Apple mobile campaigns running in iPhone and iPad apps, down from a previous $500,000 threshold and a significant reduction from the initial starting price of $1 million in 2010, when Jobs unveiled Apple's first ad product.
In addition, app developers will receive 70% of ad revenues from iAds running on their apps, compared to a previous...

Launching with support for 14 different stores worldwide, LinguaSearch lets users from all major app markets search for apps they can understand. Not only can they find apps which can be used in their native language, but the results are also sorted by rating.
For example, when a French user searches the Apple App Store, many results may not offer a French localization. With LinguaSearch, users can choose to only see apps that have been translated into their own mother tongue. The same might apply to a native Spanish speaker living in the US, who can use LinguaSearch to find apps which are available in Spanish on the US Apple App Store.

He also discussed the educational opportunities Apple offers for its employees.

'Wall Street Journal' reinforces smaller iPad rumor
The smaller iPad rumors continue. "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/cTeBw), quoting the usual unanimous "people familiar with the situation," says Apple is working with component suppliers in Asia to test a new iPad with a smaller screen (about eight inches).
The article says the smaller tablet will have a similar resolution screen as the iPad 2. Apple is working with screen makers including Taiwan-based AU Optronics and LG Display Co. of South Korea to supply the test panels, per the "WSJ."
"A smaller tablet device would broaden Apple's portfolio and help it better compete with rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co. and Amazon.com Inc.," the article adds. However, in December 2011, the Intermediate People's Court in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen rejected Apple's complaint against Proview Technology (Shenzhen). The court said Proview lawfully registered the iPad trademark as long ago as 2000 for products in a number of countries, including China.

New Apple TV along with an iPad 3?
It's anticipated that Apple will roll out a new iPad -- the iPad 3 -- next month -- and perhaps a new Apple TV as well, according to several sources, including "9to5Mac" (http://www.9to5Mac.com) and "MacRumors" (http://www.macrumors.com).
The next gen iPad is expected to boast an ultra-high resolution 2048 x 1536 display (a retina display) that exceeds the resolution of 1080p content. However, Apple only offers a maximum of 720p HD content on their iTunes Store and the current Apple TV maxes out at that resolution.
A retina display iPad would be a good launchpad for 1080p iTunes Store offerings. If this happens, an Apple TV update with 1080p support would only make sense.

Apple is top consumer electronics brand in 2011
U.S. consumer technology hardware and consumable sales fell just one half of a percent in 2011 ending the year at nearly $144 billion, according to the The NPD Group (http://www.npd.com). During that time Apple ruled the roost as the top consumer electronics brand.
The research group says that nearly 60% of all sales in 2011 were driven by the top five categories; computers, TVs, tablets/e-readers, mobile phones, and video game hardware, according to NPD’s Retail and Consumer tracking services and Mobile Phone Track. Computers (notebooks and desktops) generated the most revenue with nearly US$28 billion in sales, accounting for almost 20%of sales, but that figure was a decline of 3% from 2010. Tablets/e-readers were the clear winner in 2011, nearly doubling sales to $15 billion in 2011.
"U.S. hardware sales growth is becoming harder and harder to achieve at the broad industry level," saysStephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "Sales outside of the top five...
Apple to Asian manufacturer: it's us or Asutek

The article says the similarities between Apple’s MacBook Air and Asustek’s Zenbook prompted Apple to demand that Pegatron choose sides. The Asian manufacturer egatron currently assembles Asustek’s ultra-thin Zenbook family, but will stop doing so by the end of March, says "9to5Mac."
Investigators seizing iPads in in Shijiazhuang
Investigators started seizing iPads on Thursday in Shijiazhuang, southwest of Beijing, after receiving letters from Shenzhen Proview, an official of the economic investigation unit of the city's Xinhua district, told "ABC News."
"All the Apple iPads in the big shopping malls and supermarkets have been taken off shelves in Xinhua district," he added. The official wouldn't say how many devices had been seized or the number of retailers affected.
Apple has accused Shenzhen Proview of infringing its iPad trademark and filed a lawsuit to that affect last year. However, in December 2011, the Intermediate People's Court in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen rejected Apple's complaint against Proview Technology (Shenzhen). The court said Proview lawfully registered the iPad trademark as long ago as 2000 for products in a number of countries, including China.
Exposure 4 plug-in ships for Photoshop, Lightroom
Alien Skin Software has released Exposure 4, the new version of its photography effects plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop Lightroom. Exposure is designed for accurate film simulation and a wide range of creative effects in a simple interface.
Exposure brings all the creative tools of film photography to the world of digital, such as discontinued films, dark room tricks, and lo-fi camera quirks, according to Tom Welsh, the designer of Exposure. Popular classic films are accurately simulated, like Kodachrome, Polaroid, and Panatomic-X. Exposure reproduces the ethereal glow of black & white infrared film, and now color infrared.
New texture overlay effects are built from high resolution photos of light leaks, dust and scratches, and borders. This helps add detail to new presets for alternative photographic processes like cyanotype, lith printing, and wet plate photography, says Welsh.
Exposure 4 has a redesigned user interface and new controls that help...

"We believe that workers everywhere have the right to a safe and fair work environment, which is why we’ve asked the FLA to independently assess the performance of our largest suppliers," says Apple CEO Tim Cook. "The inspections now underway are unprecedented in the electronics industry, both in scale and scope, and we appreciate the FLA agreeing to take the unusual step of identifying the factories in their reports."

iTV or not to (be) iTV?
ITV, Britain's biggest commercial broadcaster, has written to Apple warning the company not to call its HDTV the "iTV," reports "The Telegraph" (http://macte.ch/gShvw).
Of course, Apple has never said it was planning its own branded television set, dubbed "iTV" or something else. But just in case the rumor mill is correct ITV, the broadcaster of popular period soap opera, "Downton Abbey," doesn't want to take the chance its own name might be diluted.
Adam Crozier, chief executive of Britain’s biggest commercial broadcaster, raised the issue with the company when he took the job in 2010, and purportedly received assurances that Apple wouldn't muscle into its territory, at least in the UK. However, insiders fear that the world’s biggest company might take a different stance under Tim Cook, who has replaced the late Steve Jobs as CEO, notes "The Telegraph."

iOS passes Mac OS in share of Web traffic
Apple sold a historic number of mobile devices in 2011. The IDC research group (http://www.idc.com) reports that in 2011, Apple shipped 93.2 iPhone units and sold an impressive 40 million plus iPad units. In Q4 alone, Apple sold 17.07 million iPhones, 11.12 million iPads, 6.62 million iPods but only 4.89 million Macs.
More so now than ever, mobile devices are playing a key role in the lives of consumers -- and the new found industry shows no signs of slowing down, according to Chitika Insights (http://www.chitika.com). The mobile device industry is growing so fast, that it will likely become the predominant method for consumers to access and interact with the web in the near future, according to the research group. This poses the questions: When will we see mobile traffic overtake traditional desktop traffic, and what does this mean for the computing industry?
Given the record breaking mobile device sales reported by Apple in 2011 compared to their relatively low volume of computer...
