A U.S. Federal Court Jury has ruled that Apple and LG Electronics didn't infringe on Alcatel-Lucent patents covering video compression technology., reports "The MacObserver" (http://macte.ch/jmjUD). European Union ends antitrust probe into e-book pricing
European Union regulators ended an antitrust probe into e-book prices on Thursday, accepting an offer by Apple and four publishers to ease pricing restrictions on Amazon and other retailers. The decision "hands online retailer Amazon a victory in its attempt to sell e-books cheaper than rivals in a fast-growing market publishers hope will boost revenue and customer numbers," according to "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/zBZ4v). The European Commission said the concessions from Apple and the publishers soothed concerns that their pricing deals curbed competition. Apple has been sued in Europe, the U.S. and Canada for collaborating with publishers to "fix" ebook prices. The brouhaha centers on Apple's move to change the way that publishers charged for e-books as it prepared to introduce its first iPad in 2010. Traditionally, publishers sold books to retailers for roughly half of the recommended cover price. Under that "wholesale model," booksellers were then free to offer those books to...

German court looks at Apple's infringement action against...
Germany's Mannheim Regional Court held a Dec. 7 trial on Apple's rubber-banding (overscroll bounce) infringement action against Samsung, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/apaho). The patent-in-suit is EP2126678 on "list scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch-screen display. The Mannheim court has already stayed a couple of other Apple lawsuits over doubts concerning the validity of certain asserted intellectual property rights. And a stay could also happen in the rubber-banding case, "though the hurdle is high (German courts only stay patent infringement cases if there's at least an 80% probability of invalidation) and it looks like a close question whether Samsung's invalidity contentions meet that threshold," Florian Mueller writes for "FOSS Patents." This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the...

iPhone 5 is TIME's top tech gadget of 2012
The iPhone 5 tops TIME's "Top 10 Gadgets of 2012" list. Here's what TIME has to say about the latest gen Apple smartphone: "Apple may be responsible for more than its share of the tech industry’s great leaps forward, but it’s at least as good at fussing over the tiny little details other companies ignore. The iPhone 5, which starts at $199 with a two-year contract, is one of the most artfully polished gadgets anyone’s ever built, with a taller screen than previous iPhones built into a thinner, lighter case. The camera, with a particularly well-done panorama mode, is another highlight. There are lots of nifty smartphones out there, including the iPhone’s impressive archrival, Samsung’s Galaxy S III. But when it comes to melding hardware, software and services so tightly that the seams fade away, Apple still has no peer. What's more, the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display came in at number six on the list. You can read more at http://macte.ch/WnS4G .

G-Technology says its G-SPEED RAID external storage solutions now come equipped with the industry's highest capacity enterprise-class hard disk drives (HDDs): the 4TB HGST Ultrastar drives. The company says they offer 7,200 RPM performance, 64MB cache, the highest 2.0 million hour mean-time-between-failure²(MTBF) HDD specification, and enterprise-class features. The 4TB HGST enterprise-class drives are purportedly the only SATA HDDs rated at 2.0 million hours mean time between failure (MTBF). They also utilize enterprise-specific firmware to minimize the performance impact of rotational vibration interference (RVI) found in rack-mounted servers and multi-drive storage arrays, and feature special error recovery and detection features. All G-SPEED solutions feature an aluminum enclosure with four hot-swappable drives, and a "smart" cooling fan. The G-SPEED Q RAID storage solution for creative professionals comes equipped with 3Gbit eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 (via cable) and USB...
