ByteWorks releases techBASIC App Builder
ByteWorks has released techBASIC App Builder, which gives iOS app developers the ability to write a program in techBASIC on the iPhone or iPad, compile it under Xcode with the techBASIC App Builder, and sell it on the Apple App Store.
TechBASIC App Builder takes techBASIC programs written on iOS and converts them into fully functional stand-alone apps, enabling developers to write apps without using Objective C, says Mike Westerfield, president of Byte Works. Once created, these apps can be distributed just like any other app.
They can be submitted to the Apple App Store as free or paid apps, or distributed using ad hoc distribution to any iPhone or iPad. The end product is an app that is indistinguishable from apps written in Objective C, according to Westerfield.
TechBASIC requires an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad running iOS 5 or later. It costs US$14.99 and is available in the App Store Utilities category.

Apple wins Tech & Engineering Emmy
Apple was awarded a Technology & Engineering Emmy on Thursday evening during a ceremony at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, reports "Cult of Mac" (http://tinyurl.com/9ww27yw).
The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards honor “development and innovation in broadcast technology and recognize companies, organizations and individuals for breakthroughs in technology that have a significant effect on television engineering.”
Apple’s award is for its “Eco-system for Real Time Presentation of TV Content to Mobile Devices without the use of Specialized Television Hardware.” It’s not entirely clear which of Apple’s services this relates to, but it’s thought that it relates to one of the Cupertino company’s cloud-based infrastructures, notes "Cult of Mac."
PFSOFT introduces Protrader web-based trading software
The PFSOFT company, a trading technology provider, has introduced an enhanced web trading application that works with Mac, Windows and operating systems.
"As well as our Desktop solution, Protrader for Web allows users to trade professionally over all asset classes from one place,"says Vitalii Ivliev, analyst at PFSOFT. "In addition to basic functionality, web application provides traders with advanced charting, level 2 quotes, option chain, and even automated strategies management. In addition to functionality, improvements were made considering application design, he adds. Protrader for web embodies a user friendly interface that has thought-out workspace usability and a great level of flexibility in layout customization, according to Ivliev.

Tim Cook: China will become Apple's biggest market
Apple expects China to overtake the United States as its biggest market, CEO Tim Cook told a Chinese government news agency, as reported by "ABC News" (http://tinyurl.com/b74hbej).
"China is currently our second largest market. I believe it will become our first. I believe strongly that it will," the Xinhua News Agency quoted Cook as saying in an interview.
Apple sales in China more than doubled in 2010 and 2011 though growth has slowed in the past year.
Apple updates printer drivers
Apple has updated its print drivers for various HP and Brother models.
The updated drivers work with Mac OS X 10.6 and higher. You can obtain them via the Software Update component of the Mac OS X Systems Preferences app.
NTT DoCoMo president interested in servicing the iPhone
Katoru Katō, president of NTT DoCoMo=., said that the firm would want to add the iPhone to its lineup of serviced smartphones if it could form a mutually beneficial contract with Apple, according to a "Nikkan Kōgyō Shimbun" report -- as translated by "BrightWire" (http://tinyurl.com/bh5x4pl).
Apple requires that carriers servicing its devices sell a fixed amount per year. Katō said that his company could handle such quotas if iPhones accounted for approximately 20%-30% of its overall smartphone sales.

Nektar announces Panorama support for Cubase
Nektar (www.nektartech.com), the company known for the Panorama P4 and P6 USB controller keyboards, has announced Panorama integration with Steinberg's DAW Cubase.
Panorama is designed with DAW navigation and workflow in mind, making it easy to control Cubase while performing or recording without having to reach for the computer mouse or the QWERTY keyboard. Each control, transport or navigation button is automatically mapped to Cubase with a logical layout that's transparent thanks to Panorama's high resolution TFT display.

At this week's Consumer Electronics Show, Rapoo, a manufacturer of wireless peripheral products, announced Rapoo TV -- a receiver and remote solution to make any HDTV "smart." It connects any Wi-Fi enabled iOS or Android device to an HDTV allowing users to search the Internet, download apps and view web or smartphone content.
Rapoo TV can mirror the content from the connected iOS or Android devices onto the HDTV and convert the device into the TV’s remote control. Additionally, users can connect a wireless mouse and keyboard to Rapoo TV to search the web and use the HDTV as a large desktop.

Addonics introduces the Mini HDD Duplicator Station
Addonics Technologies has announced the US$45 Mini HDD Duplicator Station (http://tinyurl.com/a2muwqp), a compact storage device about the size of a desktop computer power supply.
The storage device is designed to be used as an 1:1 HDD/SSD duplicator or as a USB 3.0 docking device for up to two SATA hard drives. It's a tool for transferring data between different types of hard drives and flash memory cards, as well as for cloning hard drives or making back up hard drives.
When used as a duplicator, you simply insert the master hard drive into the SOURCE slot and the destination drive into the TARGET slot. You then press the CLONE button and the duplication process starts automatically. Apple, photographer settle eyeball image lawsuit
Apple and Swiss photographer Sabine Liewald have settled a lawsuit involving the alleged misuse of an eyeball image used during one of Apple's keynote presentations, reports "CNET" (http://tinyurl.com/avpoytr).
News of the settlement came in a court-ordered dismissal dated last Wednesday. The two parties were scheduled to meet for a pretrial conference earlier, says "CNET." Terms weren't disclosed.
Last October Apple was sued by the photographer who claimed the electronics giant misused one of her images by including it in a promotion for its latest MacBook Pro computers. Liewald said Apple acquired the rights to use the image of a model's eye (complete with make up) for "layout purposes only," as opposed to commercial use.

Screenshots now locked in iTunes Connect after app approval
Apple has announced on its Developer Portal (http://tinyurl.com/bzhcn5t) that screenshots added to app descriptions will be locked in place once an app has been approved.
"Beginning January 9, app screenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect once your app has been approved," Apple says. "New screenshots may be uploaded when you submit a binary for an update to an existing app or a new app."

Tim Cook meets with China Mobile chairman
Apple CEO Tim Cook met with China Mobile's Chairman Xi Guohua on Thursday to discuss "matters of cooperation," reports "Reuters" (http://tinyurl.com/a3sktz7).
"In the morning, Apple's CEO Tim Cook visited China Mobile's headquarters. China Mobile's Chairman Xi Guohua and Tim Cook discussed matters of cooperation," said Li Jun, a China Mobile spokesman, in an emailed statement.
No further details will be given due to a confidentiality agreement signed, the statement said.
Apple releases MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.6
Apple has posted MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.6 for mid 2012 models.
This update fixes a color issue with HDMI displays connected to MacBook Air, resolves an issue with Windows which can prevent MacBook Air from booting properly, and also resolves an issue where unplugging a Thunderbolt device may cause the system to freeze when waking from standby. The MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update will update the EFI firmware on your computer.

Monotype Imaging Holdings has announced the commercial release of its SkyFonts service, a system that enables typographic experimentation by allowing users to try or rent fully functional fonts. SkyFonts debuts with an inventory of more than 8,000 fonts.
Users can try fonts for free for up to five minutes within any desktop application or spend credits to rent fonts for as long as they’re needed. When the trial or rental period expires or if the fonts aren't renewed, they’re removed automatically from the user’s system.

CES: RODE announces stereo mic for iOS devices
At this week's Consumer Electronics Show, RODE Microphones (www.rodemic.com) announced the iXY, a stereo microphone for iPhone and iPad and iPod touch with 30-pin connector that allows recording at sampling rates up to 24-bit/96kHz.

Walmart to begin selling the iPhone 5 with no-contact, prepaid...

Motorola Mobility files petition for review in legal battle with...
Motorola Mobility has filed a 33-page petition for review with the United States International Trade Commission (USITC, or just ITC) concerning a mid-December preliminary ruling by an Administrative Law Judge on the sole remaining patent in Motorola's complaint against Apple, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://tinyurl.com/acoshyn).
In December, Judge Thomas B. Pender, an administrative law judge at the U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled that Apple didn't violate a Motorola Mobility patent relating to a sensor controlled user interface for a portable communication device. CES: Intel demos new chips for mobile computing
At this week's Consumer Electronics Show, Intel (www.intel.com) is demoing upcoming processors, including Haswell, its forthcoming fourth generation Intel Core processor family targeted at about 10 watt design power.
What's more, Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group at Intel, says the company is bringing the low-power line of processors into its existing third generation Intel Core processor family. Available now, these chips will operate as low as seven watts, allowing manufacturers greater flexibility in thinner, lighter convertible designs. Currently there are more than a dozen designs in development based on this new low-power offering.

Tim Cook makes second trip to China
Apple CEO Tim Cook has made a second trip to China, reports "Bloomberg" (http://tinyurl.com/bk6vgkb). The article says the exec met Miao Wei, head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, to talk about the development of China’s information technology industry, global mobile communications and Apple’s business in China.
Cook visited China in March and pledged “greater investment” in the world’s largest market for computers and mobile phones. Since then, Apple has almost doubled its number of stores in China and Hong Kong to 11, from six at the time of Cook’s last visit.
AT&T announces record smartphone sales in fourth quarter
AT&T (www.att.com) says it sold more than 10 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2012, topping its previous record quarter of 9.4 million, set in the fourth quarter of 2011. This included best-ever quarterly sales of Android and Apple smartphones.
"We had another incredible quarter of smartphone sales as the mobile Internet continues to drive strong growth in wireless," says Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer for AT&T Mobility. "These are the industry’s most valuable postpaid subscribers with average revenues twice that of non-smartphone subscribers."
