iPhone 4S captures 42.8% of UK mobile phone sales in October
The iPhone 4S accounted for 42.8 % of all UK mobile phone sales in October and helped Apple to further increase its market share, according to new data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, as reported by "The Telegraph" (http://macte.ch/2NEx2).
According to Kantar, three quarters of the sales were from existing Apple users upgrading their handsets. Fourteen percent were upgrading from the iPhone 4 to the newer 4S.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at the panel, said that overtaking Android, even for just a month, was “a feat many thought impossible for Apple." Over the last year, Apple sales ranged from 20.8% to 18.5% -- and then up to 27.8%.
Apple’s overall share in the latest 12 weeks of data was up 2.8%. Smartphones made up 69.8% of sales, meaning that 44.8% of the British population now owns a smartphone, according to Kantor.
iPhones, iPads, Macs hot sellers on Black Friday
Deutsche Bank Analyst Chris Whitmore tells clients in a note -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) that a check with more than 200 stores on Black Friday show huge demand for Apple products, including the iPhone, iPad and Mac.
The analyst's checks included about 100 Apple retail stores and more than 100 AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Best Buy, Walmart and Target stores. Whtimore tells clients that about 75% of Apple retail stores polled were completely sold out of the iPhone 4S by the end of the day on Black Friday. However, Apple had restocked many of those stores by Saturday, as follow-up calls found that just 30% of Apple's stores remained sold out of the iPhone 4S.
At AT&T stores, Whitmore found that about 50% were sold out over the weekend. Verizon also has trouble keeping the Apple smartphone in stock, while Sprint had adequate inventory to keep up with demand, he adds.
Meanwhile, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster's inquiries indicates that Mac sold...
Apple still top tablet supplier in Europe
Findings from an October 2011 report (http://www.channelemea.com/spip.php?article4798) by the Context research firm showed that improved availability of the iPad 2 helped Apple maintain its spot as the largest tablet supplier in Europe. Sales volumes of tablets were up 20% sequentially in September 2011.
Sales of Acer and Asus tablets remained constant, but their share fell slightly as the market grew. This implies that while there's demand for non-Apple tablets, the opportunity appears limited at current prices, according to Context and CCS Insight.
Seven-inch tablets accounted for only 2% of total sales volumes in August. This size tablet is expected to increase its market share with the launch of Amazon’s new Kindle Fire. CCS Insight and Context expect network operators to offer tablet and smartphone bundles around Christmas, as new brands start to compete for a share of festive sales.
Competition in the non-Apple tablet market is expected to increase strongly in the fourth quarter...
Report: Apple, Google Walle will force MNO cooperation
Mobile wallets are coming, and while MNOs [mobile network operators] will provide the majority of NFC-based mobile wallets, their market share will erode between 2012 and 2016 as Google and Apple claim loyal users, according to ABI Research (http://www.abiresearch.com).
"By the end of 2012, Google will prove that Google Wallet is a hit with consumers. By 2014, we will see Google Wallets supported alongside competing MNO offerings globally," says Mark Beccue, senior analyst, mobile commerce and NFC. "MNOs will provide 75% of all mobile wallets in 2012, shrinking to 63% in 2016."
Google Wallet will also succeed in markets where MNOs prefer not to spend capital to develop and support mobile wallet infrastructure, according to the research group. These MNOs will partner with Google and will benefit financially from the ventures. Apple will factor into the erosion of MNO mobile wallet market share.
"Apple will launch a mobile wallet product in 2012. Apple’s MNO partners will allow Apple...

Australian judge questions fairness of Galaxy ban
An Australian appeals court judge has questioned the fairness of a ruling that granted Apple’s request to ban the sale of the Samsung Galaxy in the never-ending legal dispute ver patent infringement.
"The result looks terribly fair to Apple and not terribly fair to Samsung," Federal Court Justice Lindsay Foster said Friday at a hearing in Sydney on Samsung’s appeal for the ban to be overturned -- as reported by "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/MdYrx). Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett issued an injunction Oct. 13 barring the sale of the Galaxy 10.1 Tab in Australia until Apple and Samsung resolve the patent dispute at trial.
Bennett failed to consider the “dire consequences” of the ban on Samsung, which has been “entirely shut out” from marketing the device, Neil Young, Samsung’s lawyer, said. According to "Bloomberg," Justice John Dowsett said the panel would try and rule early next week on Samsung’s request to lift the injunction.

Apple looking for execs with Web-based software backgrounds
Apple has been looking to recruit senior-level executives with backgrounds in Web-based software, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://macte.ch/TNBOm), quoting unnamed "people familiar with the matter."
The article says Apple has approached at least one prominent Internet entrepreneur since at least earlier this year about a possible position. The company has also purportedly discussed its needs with recruiters.
The hunt for "cloud" execs comes on the heels of Apple's launch of iTunes Match, a cloud feature that stores music tracks in the cloud and makes them available on any device with iTunes, and iCloud, a cloud-based storage and syncing service. Apple's talent search "might suggest Apple's still not sure it got its iCloud launch right" or could indicate "that its ambitions for the cloud extend even further than it has yet revealed," opines "Channel Register" (http://macte.ch/8pZaZ).

Apple-Samsung case could be broadened
The European Commission's chief competition enforcer, vice president and competition commissioner Joaquín Almunia, told reporters Tuesday that the ongoing antitrust inquiry into the use of patents related to mobile communications standards in connection with the dispute between Apple and Samsung is "not the only case," leaving the door open to a broadening of the investigation.
"I think Motorola Mobility is the likely next recipient of a questionnaire from Brussels," Florian Mueller writes for "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/YauJ7). " While Samsung is asserting 3G-related patents against Apple in at least five EU member states, Motorola Mobility is litigating in the largest EU member state -- Germany -- against both Apple and Microsoft over at least three patents declared essential to two different industry standards."

That Apple is sourcing the display from three suppliers underscores the challenges of manufacturing a 10-inch-class QXGA screen in high volume, he says, adding that Apple is working with three different manufacturers: Samsung, Sharp and LGD. The 2048x1536 screen will be the centerpiece the of the iPad 3, Shim says.

"With market penetration of both mobile devices and digital magazines finally hitting their stride, we felt that now is the perfect time to conduct this research -- a study that we couldn’t have executed credibly a year ago with such a small pool of potential respondents," says Wayne Eadie, senior vice president of...
iOS users adopt platform upgrades 3x faster than Android...
Jumptap, which specializes in targeted mobile advertising, has released its October MobileSTAT report which, among other findings, shows that Apple is the industry leader in getting its customers to embrace new platforms and features -- a conclusion that reveals something about the habits of Apple users, as well as the company’s approach to marketing and product.
October proved to be a release-heavy month with high profile launches of the iPhone 4S and iOS 5, the announcement of Android 4.0, and the release of Blackberry’s BBX operating system. However, the most interesting insights from the Mobile STAT report focused on the way in which device releases impacted OS adoption rates.
In less than three weeks since its official release, iOS 5 had already accounted for 32% of the total iOS traffic on the Jumptap network. In contrast, new Android releases were slower to catch on. More than six months after the launch of Android 2.3, the OS had an adoption rate of less than 50% of the...
Apple still trails competition in wireless carriers
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty says in a note to clients -- as reported by "Fortune" -- says that though the iPhone has gone from one carrier -- AT&T -- to nearly 230 carriers in 105 countries, Apple still trails its competitors.
Research in Motion (RIMM), for example, has deals for the BlackBerry with 79% of the 760 operators Huberty identified. Only 30% carry the iPhone. The biggest opportunity for growth, according to Huberty is in Asia, both in terms of total population and in terms of the number of subscribers who don't have access to the iPhone because their cellular provider doesn't sell it. Running OS X in VMware Fusion: Continues to Require Lion for...
This past week, VMware Released a new version of VMware Fusion 4.1, which among other things reportedly included some significant speed enhancements to Internet Explorer 9.
One thing that was revealed is that you could run earlier versions of Mac OS X as a client under 4.1 (this was not previously possible with version 4.0.1). Given the licensing, we were incredibly surprised (although delighted) to see this. Unfortunately, while incredibly useful for developers wanting to test on multiple versions, this turns out to be an oversight.
VMware has just posted to their blog the following:
One change was the introduction of a new license verification step for users to verify they are in compliance with the OS licensing terms. When the license verification step was added in VMware Fusion 4.1 the server edition check was omitted. We are preparing an update.Running Mac OS X client in a virtual machine continues to require Lion (purchased from the Mac App Store or a USB thumb drive.) Users...
ITC dismisses S3's complaint against Apple
The US International Trade Commission has dismissed the first complaint by graphics firm S3 against Apple since"no violation" was shown and that its investigation into the complaint against Macs has been terminated, "reports "FOSS Patents" (http://macte.ch/3Msaa).
The finding overturns a July ruling by ITC judge James Gildea, which determined that none of the S3 patents were relevant to Apple's iOS products The operating system on the Mac infringes two S3 patents related to graphics chips involving image compression, Gildea said.
"It's a setback for HTC, which is in the process of acquiring S3 Graphics and was hoping to gain leverage against Apple," Florian Mueller writes for "FOSS Patents. " HTC's own first ITC complaint against Apple is rather unlikely to result in a finding of any violation. An Administrative Law Judge made an initial determination of no violation, and the ITC staff (the Office of Unfair Import Investigations) does not appear to oppose the ALJ's position."
