Category Review: image analysis software for Mac OS X, part two

This MacNews Category Review is the second part of our round-up of Mac software for image analysis. Products covered include ImageJ, Imaris, iRad, iRAF, iSee, Madena, NIH AFNI, NIH Image, OpenLab, OTMIAS, Slidebook and ProScope.

ImageJ

ImageJ (http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/) is a Java-based image processing tool that handles 8-bit grayscale, 8-bit indexed color, 16-bit unsigned integer, 32-bit floating point and 32-bit RGB.

Imaris

Imaris (http://www.bitplane.com/go/products) offers microscopy researchers tools for the interpretation of image data, combining visualization and analysis. Features include the tracking of cell motion over time, measuring volume changes in organelles and tracing entire neuronal trees. Imaris is compatible with all major microscopy image file formats.

iRad

iRad (http://irad.sourceforge.net/) is a viewer for medical images in the DICOM format. It supports uncompressed and JPEG compressed DICOM grayscale images. There's also support for 16-bit contrast adjustment, image scrolling and tiling. Included with iRad is xRad, a DICOM server for image acquisition from DICOM modalities such as CT, MRI, and US.

IRAF (Image Reduction and Analysis Facility)

IRAF (http://iraf.noao.edu/) is a software collection that handles general image processing and graphics, as well as reduction and analysis of optical and IR astronomy data. It contains a complete programming environment and hundreds of tasks.

iSee

iSee (http://www.iseeimaging.com/) is analytical imaging software that provides 100 functions for image acquisition, hardware control, image processing, analysis and presentation.

Madena

Madena (http://www.eyephysics.com/) is a utility for specialized medical image processing and viewing.

NIH AFNI

NIF AFNI (http://afni.nimh.nih.gov/afni) is a set of C programs for processing, analyzing and displaying functional MRI data.

NIH Image

NIH Image (http://rsb.info.nih.gov/) is a customizable image processing and analysis application for acquiring, editing, displaying, animating and analyzing images. It offers a range of tools and functions.

OpenLab

OpenLab (http://www.improvision.com/) is a cell imaging system with a wide variety of applications; it also has specialized modules available.

OTMIAS

OTMIAS (https://www.otmedia.com/) is image analysis software built specifically for biomedical research. It can be used to determine DNA ploidy (cell cycle analysis), S-Phase Fraction (proliferative activity), and percent of apoptotic cells on cytologic preparations or cells cultured directly on glass slides (intact cells) and on sections of formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissue.

Slidebook

Slidebook (http://www.intelligent-imaging.com/) software modules include automated microscope and external-device controls, integrated control of many CCD cameras, three kinds of deconvolution, 2D and 3D visualization and analysis, live-cell imaging, ratio imaging, FRET imaging and specialized custom analytical solutions.

ProScope

The ProScope (http://www.bodelin.com/) is a handheld digital microscope. Made for science education, law enforcement investigation, industrial quality control, medical and dental sciences and coin stamp and gem collectors, it uses modular lenses ranging from 1X to 200X. With it you can capture stills, video and time lapse with a single click and use the captured media in any iLife and iWork software tools.
