Review: Proporta's FM transmitter as good as any
The Proporta Wireless FM Stereo Transmitter is (d'uh) iPod compatible. It's a small, portable device that plugs into any standard 3.5 mm (1/4 inch) stereo output (like the one on an iPod) and transmits to a selected stereo frequency. With it, you can listen to your iPod, PDA, laptop computer, MP3 player, CD player or any other source in stereo using a normal FM radio in your home or your car.
The Proporta Wireless FM Stereo Transmitter can transmit on a number of pre-selected frequencies that are clearly labeled by a number of LEDs displayed on the front of the transmitter. You set your radio station, plug in a compatible device and you’re (theoretically) good to go. The Wireless FM Transmitter can also be powered by either an internal battery (two AAAs) or an in-car power supply. (Batteries aren't included.)
That said, here's my take on FM transmitters in general: they work okay on short distances, but are often hamstrung by interference from FM stations. That’s why I recommend a cassette adapter (about $20 from Radio Shack) as an inexpensive solution for playing an iPod in a vehicle.
I do know folks who are big fans of FM transmitters and have had better luck than Yours Truly. If you're in the market for one, Proporta's is as good as any. And at US$17.50, it's a fairly inexpensive bet.
