New MSI all-in-one could offer a glimpse of upcoming iMacs

Apple is normally a leader in, well, just about every area of technology. However, MSI has introduced a new all-in-one computer that I think is a foreshadowing of features we'll see on upcoming iMacs. Well, at least I hope it's a hint of iMac things to come.

The Wind Top AE2420 3D (http://us.msi.com/WindTop/3DAE2420) is the world’s first 3D touch screen all-in-one computer. Unlike 3D TVs, the Wind Top AE2420 3D is designed to address the current disconnect between people’s interest in 3D entertainment, and the limited availability of content, as it can bring almost any 2D content -- from home movies to DVD rentals and 3D Blu-Ray -- to life in 3D, according to the folks at MSI.

The Wind Top AE2420 3D is powered by Intel Core i7 processors, just like the high-end iMacs. They sport 24-inch, multi-touch screens and exclusive wireless 3D shutter glasses (with rechargeable batteries). Now imagine all these features on a 27-inch iMac. Actually, with the Magic Trackpad Apple might let that serve as the multi-touch aspect of its all-in-one, but, otherwise, wouldn't the Apple take on the Wind Top's technology/functionality be a mind-blowing system?

As for specifics, the Wind Top AE2420 3D has a 120Hz high scanning frequency LED back-light panel, which is twice the speed of 60Hz panels. Inside the unit, MSI uses imaging technology to create 3D visual effects similar to how the human eye views images.

MSI addresses the shortage of 3D movies with technology that converts 2D content to 3D. The Wind Top AE2420 3D is capable of running 3D games, and showing 3D photos and videos taken with the new 3D cameras on the market. Plus, it provides 3D graphics performance with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5730 discrete graphics chip that supports DireX 11.

The MSI system also sports USB 3.0, something Macs currently lack. However, I expect that to be coming in early 2011 -- UNLESS Apple moves straight to Light Peak technology.

The Wind Top AE2420 3D delivers 2.1 channel surround sound via two hi-fi five-watt channel speakers and a 10-watt subwoofer powered by MSI Premium Sound Technology and THX TruStudio Pro technology. Again, imagine that on an iMac, plus a built-in TV tuner -- or at least a build-to-order Elgato option.

Pricing for the MSI all-in-one starts at US$1,799. I expect an iMac of this nature would be more. But it would also be the ultimate home entertainment/multimedia computer.
