Study: ‘Experiential tenants’ like Apple can’t help...

A report by data analytics firm Thasos finds foot traffic dropping off at malls across the country in recent months. The study also found that malls with so-called experiential tenants that aren’t just focused on selling products, like Apple, Italian food hall Eataly and Tesla, haven’t been drawing in extra traffic.

The research group says that, overall, the foot traffic growth that U.S. malls experienced starting in late 2017 has peaked and begun to reverse course in recent months. Grocery-anchored open-air malls (GAOAs) continue to outperform all other mall categories, but the margin of this outperformance narrowed significantly in 2018.

Thasos says that, beginning in January 2018, small strip centers without major anchor tenants began to outperform open-air malls anchored by big-box retailers, reversing a 2017 trend. The report adds that foot traffic to U.S. outlet malls, which are typically outdoor retail...

Mozilla wants Apple to rotate tracking IDs on...

Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, has launched a petition, asking Apple to rotate tracking IDs on iPhones each month. The petition says there’s a unique ID living on your Apple smartphone that allows advertisers to track the ads you click on, the videos you play, and the apps you install.

You can turn this identifier off, but most people don’t know that feature exists. Mozilla’s petition says: “that’s why we’re asking Apple to change the unique IDs that advertisers use to track us on each iPhone, every month. That means we could still get relevant ads – but there’s a real cap that makes it harder for companies to build profiles of us over time.”

I didn’t write this column. I spoke it.

Farhad Manjoo, New York Times:

Here’s what I do: Instead of writing, I speak. When a notable thought strikes me — I could be pacing around my home office, washing dishes, driving or, most often recently, taking long, aimless strolls on desolate suburban Silicon Valley sidewalks — I open RecUp, a cloud-connected voice-recording app on my phone. Because I’m pretty much always wearing wireless headphones with a mic — yes, I’m one of those AirPod people — the app records my voice in high fidelity as I walk, while my phone is snug in my pocket or otherwise out of sight.

And:

Then comes the magical part. Every few days, I load the recordings into Descript, an app that bills itself as a “word processor for audio.” Some of my voice memos are more than an hour long, but Descript quickly (and cheaply) transcribes the text, truncates the silences and renders my speech editable and searchable.

And:

Writing by speaking has quietly revolutionized how I work. It...

How about ‘Feelyvision’ for macOS, iOS devices?

19 countries approve EU Copyright Directive that...

The future of Google News in Europe is now in doubt as EU member states approved The EU Copyright Directive. The new law – which could see Google having to pay publishers to include brief snippets in search results – was previously passed by the European Parliament, but was subject to approval by individual countries.

Not every country agreed to implement the directive, but most did so this morning …

RipIt is great for moving DVD videos to your Mac (or...

When you need to “rip” DVDs to your Mac's hard drive, the Little App Factory’s $24.95 RipIt does it well and quickly. But it's a no-frills app, so other software may meet your needs better. And it can’t rip Blu-ray discs.

A lot of folks (most folks?) now purchase/rent movies online. If you’re among them — or if you now buy all your films online, but have a DVD collection you’d like to digitize — RipIt gets your movies off the disc and onto your Mac, where it's easier to find, organize and play 'em. I ripped a DVD of Saturday Night Fever in about 23 minutes.

Ripping a DVD to watch, has several advantages. If you're watching a movie on a laptop, a "ripped" version conserves battery space over playing the DVD because extra juice is required to spin a disc. You can use Spotlight in macOS to find a movie in your collection. Movies stored in your computer can't get lost, scratched or broken. Plus,...

Safari: macOS browser now autosubmits logins. Here’s...

Apple changed the behavior of Safari in macOS 10.14.4, and you may have noticed it and thought it was a bug. Now, if you have stored a password for a website, when you select a login entry to autofill, Safari 12.1 for macOS automatically submits the login. Previously, it would fill the fields and still require you to click a Login or Submit or other button to proceed.

I understand Apple’s logic in making this change, as it reduces friction and takes less time to log into a site, much like dropping text message login codes into an autofill field for macOS and iOS. Apple described this Safari change in 10.14.4’s release notes as “Streamlines website login when filling credentials with Password AutoFill.”

The main Apple versus Qualcomm court battle, which starts today, looks set to be by far the world’s biggest patent or antitrust case, making previous lawsuits seem trivial in comparison.

Apple patent filing involves ‘pro-active GPU...

Apple has filed for a new patent (number 2019018037) for “pro-active GPU hardware boot-up” that shows the company wants its Macs to boot-up even faster when using internal and external GPUs [graphics processing units].

GPUs generally comprise multiple cores or processing elements designed for executing the same instruction on parallel data streams, making them more effective than general-purpose CPUs for algorithms in which processing of large blocks of data is done in parallel. In general, a CPU functions as the host and hands-off specialized parallel tasks to the GPUs.

In order for a frame to be rendered on a display, the GPU and the CPU must work together. The number of frames displayed per second (FPS) is referred to as a frame rate. At lower frame rates, the human eyes can distinguish still frames displayed in rapid succession. However, at higher frame rates, individual frames are not perceptible to a human and instead appear as seamless motion. Therefore,...

Zagg Slim Book Go keyboard case for 9.7-inch iPad...

The best thing I can say about the Zagg Slim Book Go is that it has me seriously thinking about using my 9.7-inch iPad as my primary work machine again. Apple’s baseline iPad feels a lot like a miniature laptop once it’s paired with this case, right down to a backlit keyboard that’s far more satisfying to type on than anything Apple itself offers. It’s also one of the few cases with a good solution for handling the Apple Pencil, and its detachable keyboard makes it easy to use as either a tablet or a laptop as required.

It’s not an unattractive case, but it’s never going to turn heads. Zagg covered the keyboard half with a linen material that reminds me (not unpleasantly) of coverless hardbound library books, while the side that houses the iPad sports a no-nonsense thick plastic shell. Aside from the volume buttons and a stiff but durable adjustable flap that folds down so you can use the iPad as a laptop, it’s fairly nondescript.

Apple adds “Confirm Subscription” dialog box for...

This is arguably a good thing.

Following a wake of subscription scam events in its App Store, Apple has reportedly added a subscription confirmation dialog box to the purchase process.

First publicized by developer David Barnard on Twitter, any In-App purchase that is a subscription will have an additional confirmation box after the purchase is approved.

The subscription will continue unless the user cancels it in iOS’ settings at least one day before the subscription period ends.

Apple has undergone a rash of recent subscription scams lately, some apps with what appear to be one-time in-app purchases hooking users into recurring weekly or monthly subscription costs. This has also been exacerbated via Touch ID, where users will sometimes press the home button to try to exit out of an app that offers a subscription, and instead approve the purchase.

This appears to be a server-side change, so it will work with all currently supported versions of...

FCC to hold 5G auction/Rural Broadband Fundraiser on...

Because infrastructure’s a good thing.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a 5G auction, alongside a $20.4 billion rural broadband fund.

The auction will take place on December 10, this marking the largest rang of airwaves the FCC has auctioned for use at one time. The 5G auction will consist of 3400 MHz frequencies, available in three different spectrum bands.

For the rural broadband fund, the FCC is repurposing funds to create the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. Its goal is to connect up to four million rural homes and business to high-speed internet. It will provide $20.4 billion in subsidies over the next 10 years to companies to build out rural infrastructure.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

Apple spending about $500 million on its upcoming...

Apple is spending around $500 million on more than 100 games to debut this fall with its Apple Arcade game service, reports the Financial Times (a subscription is required to read the article).

The article says that the tech giant is offering game publishers extra incentives if they agree to exclusivity windows, restricting new releases to Arcade for a few months before wide distribution on rival platforms. The strategy should continue once Arcade launches, as Apple promised the platform will net new and exclusive games on a regular basis.

Last month announced Apple Arcade, a game subscription service that will feature over 100 new and exclusive games, including original releases. The games can be played on Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs. You can start a game on one device and continue it on another. Pricing hasn’t been announced.
