No, Apple's licensing of iTunes & AirPlay 2...

Apple stole the limelight at CES without even appearing as an exhibitor, thanks to a series of announcements from Samsung and a series of other television makers incorporating Apple's AirPlay 2 wireless streaming in their products, including LG, Sony and Vizio. This news was cynically portrayed as a "strategy reversal" and a new effort at "copying Microsoft" by the Wall Street Journal -- and out here in the real world, it is nothing of the sort.

Opinion: iOS 13 is the right time for a modern take...

One of the biggest shake-ups we’ve seen in the iOS user-interface was the replacement of skeuomorphism – making things look like real-life objects – with the complete opposite in iOS 7. Where once we had realistic looking 3D representations, we instead got a ‘flat’ UI which goes out of its way to remain 2D.

While some feel that skeuomorphism looks old-fashioned these days, the approach still has its fans even now – and Apple has shown signs of beginning to adopt a new take on the look using something called anisotropism …

How to: MacBook Air Windows 10 RTX 2080 eGPU gaming...

On its own, the 2018 MacBook Air is a downright terrible gaming machine. Connected to my LG UltraWide 5K2K Display, the MacBook Air averages around 1-2 frames per second in Rocket League, and similarly abysmal scores in Unigine Heaven and Valley benchmarks. That’s no fault of the MacBook Air, as it’s a thin and light portable laptop built around maximizing battery life. In other words, it was never intended to be a gaming machine.

But if you own a MacBook Air and are looking for ways to get more out of your laptop, then an eGPU setup within a Windows Boot Camp environment can go a long way towards making that a reality. Watch our hands-on video walkthrough for the step-by-step details. more…

LG’s new 17-inch Gram laptop makes me want a 17-inch...

At this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), LG was showcasing its  ultralight $1700 17-inch Gram laptop that, as I’ve noted previously, makes me long for a new 17-inch MacBook Pro.

LG’s laptop (pictured) sports an eighth generation Intel Core i7 processor, a 17-inch WQXGA (2560 x 1600) IPS display, a Thunderbolt 3 port, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, and a 72Wh lithium battery that purportedly runs for 19.5 hours for $1,700. It also has three USB 3.1 ports, a micro-SD port, an HDMI port, and Ethernet port.

Imagine if Apple released a similar laptop with FaceID, a bezel-less screen, optional cellular connectivity, and expandable memory so you could use third party memory and not have to pay Apple’s outrageous prices.

Apple patent filing hints at improved handwriting...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20190012072) for “character recognition on a computing device” that shows the company is working on further improvements to the handwriting tech on iOS devices — and is even considering bringing it to macOS.

In the patent filing, the tech giant notes that user interaction with devices such as computers and other electronic computing devices has increased significantly in recent years. These devices can be computers, tablet computers, televisions, and multimedia devices.

Interaction with these devices can be performed using various input devices, such as touch screen displays, touch-sensitive surfaces, remote controls, mice and other input devices. Touch-sensitive surfaces and touch screen displays, in particular, have become increasingly popular input devices, as has providing handwritten input using such input devices.

Apple sys that providing for robust character recognition of handwritten input enhances the user's...

The most important thing to do if your Mac has a...

SSDs (solid-state drives) offer extremely reliable, fast, and consistent performance over many, many years. They aren’t subject to problems that can harm even the best-designed modern hard disk drives (HDDs): exposure to magnetic fields or the failure of moving parts inside the drives.

But SSDs remain expensive many years after they first appeared. Nearly all other aspects of computation—from processors to RAM to LCD displays—have dropped dramatically in price while improving in quality and performance year after and year. SSDs initially followed that curve, especially for lower-capacity drives, but tapered way off. The cost of manufacturing higher-capacity memory chips used in SSDs hasn’t dropped much in recent years.

Turn-by-turn directions, ride hailing features...

If you’re looking to meander towards India in the near future, you’ll like this.

Apple has incorporated turn-by-turn navigation to Apple Maps in India. It also gave customers in the country the ability to order taxis from within the app via popular ride-hailing services.

A number of users in India, especially New Delhi and Bengaluru, noticed that the feature had arrived. An Apple spokesperson confirmed the update.

At present, users can now order a taxi from either Uber or Ola, which account for the two biggest ride-hailing apps in the country.

India is, of course, a crucial market for Apple, and one where it sees the potential for a lot of growth. At the moment, around 90% of smartphones sold in the country run on Android. In September 2018, regulations postponed the introduction of Apple Pay there.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become as they become available.

The future of Apple is playing well with others

Apple’s not known for being the most outward-looking organization. For much of its existence, it’s seemed to project an aura of indifference—verging on ignorance—of what goes on outside its walls. That’s in large part by design: Apple has always had a carefully cultivated veneer of being in a league of its own, eschewing any need to pay attention to what its would-be rivals were up to.

Even when it has deigned to work with others, Apple generally presented an attitude of doing this as a favor to its partners, bestowing some small iota of the Apple brand and mojo upon them. (Remember its deals with Motorola and HP in the 2000s?) There’s no better example than porting iTunes to Windows—arguably one of the best business decisions Apple made, since it brought the iPod to scads of PC users—a move that Steve Jobs famously, if not decorously, described as “giving a glass of ice water to someone in hell.”

The successor to the iPhone XR, with LCD screen panel, will be upgraded from a single rear lens to a dual-camera system.

The triple camera system is visualised in this render from last weekend, which is meant to be based on iPhone 11 prototypes. The Journal’s story today corroborates that previous leak.

The research group says Apple sold 1.7 million Macs during the fourth quarter of 2018. That’s down from 1.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2017. That gives the Mac 12.1% share of the U.S. market compared to 12.4% in the year-ago period.

Codea’s iOS Menu Bar

Simeon, co-creator of the amazing iPad coding app Codea:

Codea is our iPad app for creative coding. I’ve been developing
a universal version for some time.

It’s hard to take a complicated, eight-year-old iPad coding
environment and bring it to iPhone. There’s so many damn features
that need to work in so many damn configurations.

Autolayout takes care of many of these issues (thanks, SnapKit).
But it doesn’t take care of the most important: design. I’ve been
stuck on the design for a universal version of Codea’s code editor
for over a year. It might even be two.

I realised six months ago as I was using my Mac, using the menus,
that I need these things — menus — in Codea. I was trying to
solve a problem that has been solved for decades.

So I set out to make the best menus I could make for iOS.

Do not miss their...

We want a lot out of iOS 13, but there’s one issue that’s becoming increasingly problematic on iPhones for a lot of customers: spam calls. Hulu redesign aims to simplify navigation

Hulu is preparing to update its streaming app in order to make it simpler to navigate to and discover content you want to watch. Some of the changes coming in the weeks ahead are smaller, but worthwhile tweaks – like adding buttons or rearranging menus. But the more notable change is that Hulu is testing the elimination of the app’s existing landing page – currently known as “Lineup” – and replacing it with a new experience.

There’s a possibility that the testing might reveal that viewers prefer “Lineup” over “Hulu Picks” so the company can’t definitively say that it will drop Lineup permanently.

I’m currently testing out Hulu and it’s a pretty good app, but these changes are a good move. There are some other changes I would like to see with the DVR and other functions, but navigation should help users find the content they want faster.
