Invisible 'Kismet' iMessage exploit used...

A group of 37 journalists has fallen prey to an iMessage vulnerability, one that has existed for a year, enabling bad actors supposedly working for governments to spy on the journalists' activities.A report from the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab claims to have uncovered an operation that took place during July and August of 2020, one conducted by government operatives. The campaign attacked 37 iPhones owned by journalists, producers, anchors, and executives at news-gathering organizations, with the main target being Al Jazeera. The attacks used Pegasus spyware from NSO Group, specifically a vulnerability referred to as "Kismet." It is believed the vulnerability was an "invisible zero-click exploit in iMessage," and was a zero-day exploit against iOS 13.5.1 and possibly...

AirPods Max Unboxing & Review: The pinnacle of...

I’ve been using AirPods Max all week, and I’ve got a lot of thoughts. My biggest takeaway is that these headphones are overpriced. I like them a lot for various reasons, but they are 100% overpriced. The reasons you would buy this pair of headphones could be quite similar to the same reasons someone buys a $500+ pair of shoes — it’s just because you like what you like. And while $550 is a lot to command, the vast majority of consumers these headphones are being marketed to are absolutely going to enjoy these headphones. Here’s why.

Microsoft may go down the same route as Apple in shifting away from Intel for its products, with the software giant said to be working on its own processor designs that may end up in its Surface computer line.Apple's self-designed A-series chips used in the iPhone and iPad lineup, as well as the new Apple Silicon for Macs, has demonstrated it is possible for a hardware producer to create its own processor instead of relying on a third party like Qualcomm or Intel. Rumors from Microsoft suggest it too may pull off the same hardware maneuver in the future.According to sources of Bloomberg, Microsoft is working on an in-house processor design,...

Facebook's Criticism of Apple's Tracking...

The MacRumors site writes:
Facebook's recent criticism directed at Apple over an upcoming tracking-related privacy measure is "laughable," according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a non-profit organization that defends civil liberties in the digital world.
Facebook has claimed that Apple's new opt-in tracking policy will hurt small businesses who benefit from personalized advertising, but the EFF believes that Facebook's campaign against Apple is really about "what Facebook stands to lose if its users learn more about exactly what it and other data brokers are up to behind the scenes," noting that Facebook has "built a massive empire around the concept of tracking everything you do...." According to the EFF, a number of studies have shown that most of the money made from targeted advertising does not reach app developers, and instead goes to third-party data brokers like Facebook, Google, and lesser-known firms.

"Facebook touts itself in this case...

The Look Around feature of Apple Maps may work with more countries in the future, with Apple's vehicles driving around Israel, New Zealand, and Singapore to collect images used to generate the street-level views.Introduced in iOS 13 and later macOS Big Sur, Look Around is Apple Maps' answer to Google Maps' Streetview. Using photographs caught by its fleet of Apple Maps vehicles, scrollable views from street level are available to access in a number of locations, though it seems more areas will be added to the roster soon enough. The Apple Maps Image Collection page, which lists countries and regions, the type of image collection mechanism being used, and when the capturing is taking place, has been updated with details relating to three countries. The Verge reports:

Firefox's latest update brings native support for Macs that run on Apple's Arm-based silicon, Mozilla announced on Tuesday. Mozilla claims that native Apple silicon support brings significant performance improvements: the browser apparently launches 2.5 times faster and web apps are twice as responsive than they were on the previous version of Firefox, which wasn't native to Apple's chips...

Firefox's support of Apple's Arm-based processors follows Chrome, which added support for Apple's new chips shortly after the M1-equipped MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini were released in November.

Firefox 84 will also be the very last release to support Adobe Flash, notes ZDNet, calling both developments "a reminder of the influence Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has had and continues to exert on software and hardware nine years after his death."
Jobs wrote off Flash in 2010 as successful Adobe software but one that was a 'closed' product "...

Apple has released a support document on helping users figure out if their device(s) are being accessed by others without their knowledge. The company also mentions steps that users can take in such cases to protect their privacy.

The support document reads, “Apple makes it easy to connect and share your life with the people closest to you.” It stresses on the importance of an individual’s privacy, “ What you share, and whom you share it with, is up to you — including the decision to make changes to better protect your information or personal safety.”

Best guide to protect your data on Apple devices

The Director of Cybersecurity at Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Eva Galperin tweeted the link of the support document published by Apple. Major problems with MacBook Pro models

Apple hasn’t largely changed the MacBook Pro since the redesigned model of 2016 which also introduced the TouchBar. However, the last three years have been very bad for the Mac as a whole.

Very soon, it was realized that the chassis of the 2016 MacBook Pro design was not good at cooling the machine. The relatively new butterfly keyboard which was introduced alongside the 2015 12” MacBook also brought over to the MacBook Pro suffered from major quality issues.

The much hyped TouchBar falls short

The TouchBar which was sold by Apple as a revolutionary new way of input seldom receives any love. Apple touted the TouchBar as a major new input mechanism after having perfected the mouse with the first Macintosh in 1984 and the touch on the iPhone. However, the TouchBar fell short of the hype and as a result, the majority of the users wish that Apple would just bring back the function buttons instead.

The current generation MacBook Pro models are far better...

Apple’s A14 Bionic beats Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888

Apple unveiled the 2020 flagship processor for its mobile devices, the A14 Bionic, in September. On the other hand, Qualcomm introduced its flagship processor Snapdragon 888 with major promises. Apple continues to hold the lead over Qualcomm, as the benchmarks rate A14 much higher than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888.

The iPad Air was the first device to use the A14 Bionic  and in October, the company introduced flagship iPhones powered by A14 Bionic as well. Qualcomm’s new chip will power most of the flagship Android phones that are set to release in 2021. Apple has already launched four iPhone 12 models that are powered by the A14 Bionic chip.

A funny thing to note is that even last year’s chip A13 Bionic beat Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 888. The noted online tech magazine AnandTech released a set of results comparing the leading chips in the smartphone world. According to the tests (benchmarks), the A14 Bionic scored 1,603 in single- core...

Apple-Criticizing Banner Ads Now Added to Some of...

Facebook added banner ads criticizing Apple into some of its iOS apps, 9to5Mac reports, in its ongoing war against Apple's new privacy changes:
By tapping the Learn More button, the app opens an article written by Facebook in which the company says Apple's policies announced at WWDC 2020 with iOS 14 will "harm the growth of business and the free internet." Facebook refers both to the new App Store privacy labels and also an option in iOS 14 that prevents apps from tracking users.

The fact that Facebook is now showing these messages in its iOS apps criticizing Apple demonstrates that the company is trying to get popular appeal to change Apple's mind about its new App Store privacy rules. That's because Facebook is one of the companies that will be most impacted by Apple's new privacy policies as its social networks rely heavily on ads and personal data from users.

In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said it doesn't want to force Facebook to change its business...

Apple to temporarily close Stores in LA

With COVID-19 cases still rising in Los Angeles Apple will be temporarily closing a number of retail stores in the area.

The occurrence is a first in a few months, and Apple will be closing its two Los Angeles Apple Stores today. Eleven others will be following on Saturday, and there’s no information on when operations will resume.

In December all of the South California population is under a ‘stay at home’ order, but non-essential stores can remain open. Malls and stores are expected to run at reduced capacity.

Corona virus cases are also climbing in the Bay Area but Apple has not made the move to close its stores there yet. Most are operating in ‘Express’ mode which allows for genius bar appointments and order pickups only.

Apple-1 computer and Apple II Schematics by Wozniak...

RR Auction has recently revealed that schematics for an Apple II prototype computer has sold for $630,272. What makes it special was that it was written by Steve Wozniak, then co-founder of Apple.

The documents consisted of notes and circuit schematics, programming instructions and photocopied pages of ‘Timing’, ‘Sync Timing and Adr. Gen’, ‘Display’, ‘System Timing’ and ‘Bus Sources’. Veracity was confirmed via a letter of provenance signed by Wozniak himself, saying how he was an engineer at HP and worked on hand-held calculators.

Also, an Apple-1 computer was featured in the same auction and fetched $736,862. These machines are distinctive in that they were the first computers created and sold out of Job’s garage. There were only 175 units created and more than half no longer exist.

Following the damage caused to the factory through the violence, as well as state authorities determining it had broken labor laws, Wistron now has to contend with a loss of income from its client, Apple.

Wistron removes VP in row of violence at iPhone plant

The Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron, handling the assembly of some models of iPhones in the Indian state Karnataka, removed the Vice President of Indian “activities”. The assembly plant suffered from major losses as workers took to violence for non-payment of salaries and forceful overtime.

Under Vicent Lee’s watch, the Wistron plant in India suffered from major issues. As a result, the company is removing the person from the position. The plant is located in the city of Kolar where the riot saw cars being overturned, glass being smashed, and a lot more of violence.

“Since the unfortunate events at our Narasapura facility we have been investigating and have found that some workers were not paid correctly, or on time. We deeply regret this and apologize to all of our workers,” read a statement released by Wistron.

The statement released by Wistron in response to the recent violence added, “This is a new...

Opinion: Getting back to the iPhone battery service...

By David Balaban

I want to touch on the problem of the independent repair community not being fair to Apple. I almost never say things like that because I think Apple does a lot of bad things. I think they are too controlling, their reach is too far, and they prevent us from being able to extend the lives of our devices.

I think that we should call the tech giant out when it does bad things. At the same time, I think that we also must be fair because if we expect to be treated fairly, then we need also to be fair.

I think that this battery service issue that was being sensationalized needs some thought to be put on.

Apple is a threat to the free internet, says Facebook

Facebook is in a feud with Apple over the new updated privacy settings, the iPhone maker is scheduled to release early next year. The social networking giant ran a full page on December 16, criticizing Apple’s “forced software update” which according to Facebook will “limit businesses’ ability to run personalized ads”.

The social networking ran a second full page ad titled “Apple vs. the free internet”.  The company ran the ad on December 17, one day after the first full page. The first ad was in New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post titled “We’re standing up to Apple for small businesses everywhere”.

Apple is planning to implement a slew of new privacy features in iOS. Starting early next year, apps will not be able to gather data from users without their permission. Developers can ask users for permission to track their activity with the help of a pop-up prompt. Users can either agree to let that app track their...

Apple, others ban Kazakhstan’s MitM HTTPS certificate

Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, have banned today a root certificate that was being used by the Kazakhstan government to intercept and decrypt HTTPS traffic for residents in the country's capital, the city of Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), reports ZDNet.

Under the guise of a "cybersecurity exercise," the Kazakhstan government is forcing citizens in its capital of Nur-Sultan to install a digital certificate on their devices if they want to access foreign internet services. Once installed, the certificate would allow the government to intercept all HTTPS traffic made from users' devices via a technique called MitM (Man-in-the-Middle).

However, with the ban, even if users have the certificate installed, browsers like Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Mozilla will refuse to use them, preventing Kazakh officials from...

I’m not exactly a fan of using my iPhone with a case, especially with the stunning new iPhone 12 design. Even so, I still like to have some cases around — either to protect my iPhone in some situations or to change its style from time to time. I’ve been using the Mujjo leather case with my iPhone 12 Pro Max for the last month and it has proven to be a great alternative to Apple’s MagSafe leather cases.

Facebook: Free as in Bullshit

Facebook’s second full-page newspaper ad attacking Apple, helpfully transcribed (and photographed) by MacRumors:

Apple vs. the free internet

Apple plans to roll out a forced software update that will change
the internet as we know it — for the worse.

Take your favorite cooking sites or sports blogs. Most are free
because they show advertisements.

It’s an unfortunate quirk of the English language that free as freedom and free as in beer are very different meanings of free. But when you see an ad headlined “Apple vs. The Free Internet”, most people would assume they’re about to hear an argument about free as in freedom.

Not Facebook. They’re arguing about free as in beer. I mean, they’re alleging that Apple is taking away freedom — the freedom of small business advertisers to benefit from unrestricted...

I'm sure this sounds familiar: You're trying to download and install the latest iOS release, or take some photos, or download that cool app your friend told you about, and your iPhone says the storage is full.

You’ve already deleted every app you don’t think you need, and there’s still not enough space. So you look at your iPhone storage in Settings page and, sure enough, your iPhone’s storage is full. Worst of all, a huge chunk of it is just listed as Other. What’s that supposed to mean? How do you get rid of it?
