Everyone’s AirPods will die. We’ve got the trick to...

Geoffrey A. Fowler, Washington Post:

“Sorry, we can’t help you,” said the Apple store Genius. My AirPods were dying. After just 15 minutes of use, the wireless headphones I use daily chirp a sad little battery-depleted alert. I came to Apple to get them repaired.

The employee said there were lots of people like me, with $159 AirPods purchased in 2016 and 2017 that now can’t hold a charge. But even though Apple promises “battery service,” the store had no way to fix my AirPods. It didn’t even have a way to test them.

If you are running into battery issues with your AirPods, here’s the sequence Fowler lays out for figuring out the economic path to follow:

  • If your AirPods are less than a year old and the battery is not performing up to the promised five hours of listening time, an Apple store will replace them at no cost.

  • Apple recently began selling its AppleCare+ warranty for $29, which covers the battery, too. But this...

Where Apple Music is headed in 2020

Sophie Charara, Wired UK:

Apple doesn’t break out Beats 1 monthly listening figures; various commentators have speculated they are relatively low, the official line is “tens of millions”. What we do know is that one of Lowe’s priorities is to merge the two elements of Apple’s £9.99 a month Music offering: its Spotify-style streaming service and the Beats 1 radio shows.

And:

When it comes to someone like Billie Eilish, who now has her own Beats 1 show, the Apple Music team realised that their pre-adds, which allow users to register their interest in an album before it’s out, had made people more invested in her March 2019 album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

It turns out users are four times more likely to complete an album if they’d pre-added it to their collection, 1.5 times more likely to listen to it again and they listen to music four times longer than other Apple Music subscribers. In short, Apple is trying to build a better hype machine than...

No new iPad Pros this year? ‘Apple Glasses’ in early...

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — analyst Ming-Chi Kuo forecasts that Apple will release updated iPad Pros and new MacBooks (yep, MacBooks, not MacBook Airs) in the first half of 2020, along with an “iPhone SE 2” and the long-anticipated Apple Glasses.

He thinks the next rev of Apple’s pro tablet will come in the same 11-inch and 12.9-inch form factors, but will feature, among other things, a Time of Flight 3D sensor that will aid in augmented reality apps and usage. So does this mean that we’ll see no refresh of the iPad Pro line-up this fall? Almost everyone (including me) felt we’d see ‘em updated with new specs later this month.

Kuo says the MacBook will replace the controversial butterfly keyboard with a scissor mechanism keyboard that will be more durable. I’m assuming he means the 12-inch MacBook....

Ausounds AU Stream ANC review: Impressive sound and...

Active noise cancellation is still a rarity when it comes to true wireless earbuds, and it’s generally an expensive feature, to boot. Enter the Ausounds AU Stream ANC earphones, a pair of relatively compact and comfortable Bluetooth earbuds that pack in impressive sound, a water-resistant design, and solid noise-cancellation abilities for a reasonable $150 price tag. We do have a few quibbles, however, including a so-so charging case, the lack of aptX support, and the fact that the microphones occasionally pick up wind noise.

Design

Measuring about 1.7 inches long and weighing about 0.4 ounces (for the pair), the black AU Stream ANC earbuds are slightly longer and about twice the weight of a pair of Apple AirPods, although that’s not to say that the earbuds (which are each equipped with 13mm titanium gold drivers) are anywhere near heavy.

As any long-time Apple World Today patron knows, I’m a big fan of WaterField Designs’ products. The company’s new Executive Leather iPhone Sleeve — available in six custom-fitted sizes for the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max (“naked” or within an Apple case) is as gorgeous as the rest of the company’s products, but doesn’t fit my needs. At least without an additional purchase.

Handcrafted from full-grain cow or pebbled bison leather, it looks and feels great. The $69.9 Executive Leather iPhone Sleeve  is lined with soft Ultrasuede  that protects and cleans the screen of the smartphone as you slide it in and out of a coat, briefcase, or purse. However, it’s too big to fit into a pants or shirt pocket. You can spring an extra $5 for a loop and carabiner so it can be attached to a belt or bag loop, which is what I need to use the...

How to pair a wireless controller with your Apple TV

And I really like that you can pair a PlayStation DUALSHOCK 4 or Xbox Wireless Controller for gameplay. Here’s how to connect of the controllers to your Apple TV:

Begin with your controller turned off. Then to put your controller in pairing mode. With an Xbox Wireless Controller, press the Xbox button to turn on the controller. Then press and hold the Connect button for a few seconds.

With a DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller, press and hold the PS and Share buttons at the same time until the light bar begins to flash.

Then on your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth. Wait while your Apple TV searches for nearby Bluetooth Accessories.

Patent outlines how vibration/feedback could be...

Your Apple Pencil could one day provide vibrational feedback as you draw.

A recently published Apple patent shows how a next-gen Apple Pencil could use haptic feedback, with the use of magnetic fields physically affecting the stylus while it is actively being used to draw on an iPad or iPad Pro, using the force to vibrate the implement.

Such a feature could be powered by a motor or actuator of some form that would vibrate the stylus, as seen in some video game controllers.

Per the patent, entitled “Stylus with external magnetic influence,” Apple has suggested that such feedback could be achieved by creating magnetic fields that can impart a force on the tool. The patent features a magnetic component embedded inside the stylus, as per usual with the Apple Pencil. The stylus could react to magnetic fields which would move the stylus magnet, which would then move the attached stylus.

The magnetic component could be housed in a spring, which would allow...

iCloud Drive folder sharing, other features, pushed...

Sometimes a project takes a bit longer than expected.

Apple has quietly informed customers that its shared iCloud Drive folders feature, which would have directly competed with Dropbox, has been pushed back to 2020.

Prior to Tuesday, the macOS All Features page had an asterisk for iCloud folder sharing that said the addition would be coming later this fall. Overnight, the text has changed to “coming this spring.”

The Communication Limits for Screen Time feature has also been pushed back as well.

The corresponding iOS 13 All Features page has not yet been updated to reflect the new timeline. It seems almost certain, though, that it will also be pushed back to the spring.

The iCloud Drive system was overhauled during the iOS 13 beta period, adding new features such as folder sharing and the ability to pin files to stay downloaded. Unfortunately, a number of beta testers reported issues with data loss and data corruption. Apple, in turn, reverter...

Owlcam review: The easiest, classiest, most phone-...

When it first shipped, the Owlcam broke new ground by cherry-picking the best ideas from the competition and adding an excellent trick of its own: uploading incident video in real time to the cloud. It’s also easily the slickest consumer experience in the market, with some real top-notch design flourishes.

Note that this is actually our second look at the Owlcam. We tested what was basically a shipping beta, then known as the Owl Car Cam, just over a year ago. It lacked key features such as Android support, some of which were added after that review. Reviewed here is the mature product.

Apple is apparently getting the rights to A Christmas Carol, a live action musical based on the Charles Dickens’ classic that will  star Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, reports Variety. It will arrive later this year on Apple TV+, although it could get a limited theatrical release first.

The article adds that Reynolds and Ferrell stand to make “staggering amounts” as producers and stars, along with “significant paydays” for writer-directors Sean Anders and John Morris (Daddy’s Home, Instant Family). Apple TV+ original shows, series, and movies: Apple...

Apple is said to be spending a couple billion dollars over 2018 and 2019 on the development of exclusive original programming. That’s a lot of TV! It’s nothing compared to the $12 billion Netflix spent on content in 2018, but it’s still a very big investment.

What can you get for a couple billion dollars? Apple hopes to attract some of the best talent in TV and film production, including huge stars and directors, and to lock down the television and movie rights to best-selling books. Though the company has only given us a glimpse at a handful of shows, the Hollywood trade press has uncovered many more through its reporting on deals from casting agents and production companies.
