Trump’s tariffs will still hit desktop Macs, AirPods...

We learned yesterday that this year’s iPhones will escape the latest of Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports for the first two months or so of sales. The US government announced that the new tariff has been deferred until December for certain product categories, including cellphones.

However, while iPads and MacBooks also benefited from the delayed introduction, the 10% tariff will still kick in for a number of other Apple products on September 1 …

Why Disney’s video bundle will force Apple to bundle...

It’s amazing how one company can change how you view pricing in an entire market.

More than a year ago, I made some guesses about how Apple would roll out its still-forthcoming TV streaming service. I was a symbol away from getting the name right, and guessed that “Apple TV”—we now know it’s called Apple TV+—would cost $7.99 a month, with an affordable bundle with Apple Music.

But back then, Disney’s streaming plans were still on the drawing board. Today, with the launch of Apple’s service coming very soon, the landscape is more complicated and competitive than ever. Not only are NBCUniversal and Warner Media preparing their own streaming-service launches, but Disney’s moves keep getting more aggressive.

FAA bans some MacBook Pro notebooks with recalled...

When your notebook’s battery is in questionable shape, the FAA tends to take notice.

U.S. airline safety regulators banned select MacBook Pro notebooks on flights after Apple recently stated that some units posed a fire risk.

In a statement, the FAA said that it was “aware of the recalled batteries that are used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops” and stated that it alerted major U.S. airlines about the recall.

The watchdog group also reminded airlines to follow 2016 safety instructions for goods with recalled batteries. As such affected Apple notebooks should not be included on flights as cargo or carry-on baggage.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency issued a warning about these MacBook Pro models earlier this month, telling airlines in the region to follow 2017 rules that require devices with recalled lithium-ion batteries to be switched off and not used during flights.

The Apple notebooks in question are some 15-inch MacBook Pros sold...

New Apple Maps data, more details maps, begin...

Roughly one year ago, Apple announced a huge change to its Maps app, stating that the company was completely overhauling its fundamental map data. The new data would expand upon what was there, now including buildings, rivers, roads, and vegetation in a vastly more accurate and detailed form.

Apple began rolling out the new mapping data to Northern California just after its announcement, with a promise to continue rolling out new maps to the rest of the U.S. “over the next year.” Southern California and Hawaii followed in late 2018, then parts of the southwest in April 2019.

The updated maps have begun rolling out to Texas, Louisiana, and Southern Mississipi, the more detailed data funneling into the application without the need to download a new iOS update.

As of August 13th, 2019, the new maps have begun rolling out to several areas in the northeastern U.S., including Maine, New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

Since the introduction of Apple...

It's time to liberate the Apple Watch from the...

By the time watchOS 6 drops later this year, only the slimmest of threads will keep the Apple Watch tethered to the iPhone. The watch itself will soon have its own App Store. It’ll have more useful built-in apps, such as a calculator and voice memos, and long ago, the cellular models eliminated the need to rely on the iPhone for internet connection. It’s already so close to being a standalone device, so I say it’s time for Apple to snip the last thread and open it to buyers who don’t have an iPhone.

The Apple Watch is already a hit with its current design, but a standalone Apple Watch may turn into a cultural phenomenon of the likes that Apple hasn't seen in years now. Even handcuffed to the iPhone, the Apple Watch is already the undisputed leader of the smartwatch world, to the point that earlier this week research firm Strategy Analytics (via...

Remember how Samsung suffered the indignity of having the Galaxy Note 7 banned from U.S. flights, and how one exploded on a Southwest Airlines flight? Apple is attracting slightly similar attention after Bloomberg quoted a statement from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration confirming that 2015 15-inch MacBook Pros with defective batteries are banned from U.S. flights.

FAA Bans Recalled MacBook Pros From Flights

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has banned select MacBook Pro laptops on flights after Apple recently said that some units had batteries that posed a fire risk. In a statement, the FAA said it was "aware of the recalled batteries that are used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops" and stated that it alerted major U.S. airlines about the recall. Bloomberg reports: The watchdog also reminded airlines to follow 2016 safety instructions for goods with recalled batteries, which means that the affected Apple laptops should not be taken on flights as cargo or in carry-on baggage by passengers. The Apple laptops in question are some 15-inch MacBook Pros sold between September 2015 and February 2017. Apple issued the recall in June, saying it had "determined that, in a limited number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro units, the battery may overheat and pose a fire safety risk."

This week, four airlines with cargo operations managed by Total Cargo Expertise -- TUI Group...

Researcher Makes Legit-Looking iPhone Lightning...

A researcher known as MG has modified Lightning cables with extra components to let him remotely connect to the computers that the cables are connected to. "It looks like a legitimate cable and works just like one. Not even your computer will notice a difference. Until I, as an attacker, wirelessly take control of the cable," MG said. Motherboard reports: One idea is to take this malicious tool, dubbed O.MG Cable, and swap it for a target's legitimate one. MG suggested you may even give the malicious version as a gift to the target -- the cables even come with some of the correct little pieces of packaging holding them together. MG typed in the IP address of the fake cable on his own phone's browser, and was presented with a list of options, such as opening a terminal on my Mac. From here, a hacker can run all sorts of tools on the victim's computer.

The cable comes with various payloads, or scripts and commands that an attacker can run on the victim's machine. A hacker can...

Cosmic Watch Puts The Universe At Your Fingertips

Over the years, I’ve reviewed a number of apps that are designed to assist both amateur astronomers and science buffs. When Cosmic Watch appeared on my radar, I thought I would try out its features and give Apple World Today readers an idea of how this iOS app can both educate and delight you.

Cosmic Watch is designed and developed by Celestial Dynamics Ltd of Zurich, Switzerland, so it’s no wonder that the app has the precision of a fine mechanical watch. The app, which sells for $4.99, is probably the best-looking astronomy app I’ve used. It differs from many of the others by acting as a 3D planetarium, a timepiece like none you’ve ever used before, and as an augmented reality guide to the night skies.

Launch Cosmic Watch on your iPhone or iPad, and you’ll be drawn into the app’s beautiful real-time renderings of the universe around you., Tap the...

New Apple Maps are rolling out to the northeast U.S.

About a year ago, Apple announced a huge change to Apple Maps. It wasn’t about new features in the Maps app (though there are new features coming in iOS 13), but rather a complete overhaul of the fundamental map data. Buildings, rivers, roads, vegetation; it’s all vastly more detailed and accurate in the new maps.

Apple began rolling out the new mapping data to Northern California just after its announcement, with a promise to continue rolling out new maps to the rest of the U.S. “over the next year.” Southern California and Hawaii followed in late 2018, then parts of the southwest in April 2019.

CarPlay in iOS 13: A big leap forward

John Voorhees, MacStories:

CarPlay fascinates me because it’s a relatively rare example of a successful Apple software product that isn’t tightly integrated with the company’s hardware. Of course, CarPlay runs from an iPhone, but it also relies on automaker media systems to deliver its experience to users in their cars. This lack of integration shows in cars with slower media systems; however, even when automakers’ hardware provides a subpar experience, CarPlay’s simplified but familiar interface and access to content already on users’ iPhones is superior. So much so in fact that Apple says CarPlay has managed to capture 90% of the new car market in the US and 75% worldwide.

Those are astonishing numbers. Compare them to Android’s far larger market share in smartphone representation. My gut is that this is due, in part, to the relatively high cost of buying a car. With smartphones, you have a massive low end, with some phones given away. Android dominates the low end...

This is an incredible story. At the heart of it: Pornography.

Yahoo bought Tumblr which, back in 2013, was a hotbed for pornography. Yahoo banned porn, and site traffic plummeted.

According to the linked Wall Street Journal article:

Verizon Communications Inc. has agreed to sell its blogging website Tumblr to the owner of popular online-publishing tool WordPress.com, unloading for a nominal amount a site that once fetched a purchase price of more than $1 billion.

So what’s a nominal amount? According to Axios:

Verizon is set to sell the social network Tumblr to Automattic Inc, the owner of online publishing tool WordPress. A source familiar with the deal puts the price-tag “well below” $20 million, while another source puts it below $10 million.

Apple gold now sourced from miners who reverse Gold...

Apple gold supplies — used in small amounts in circuit boards — are now being sourced from miners who work to not only restore but improve the land used once operations are complete.

Jeweler Tiffany & Co has also signed up to the same initiative, which will reverse historic mining damage to rivers and streams in order to allow the return of salmon on the endangered species list…

Hacks: Tall tales of Apple security woes

Have you heard the one about the Face ID “hack”?

WELL. Keep your hands and feet inside the cart as this ride can take sudden turns.

Writing for the Forbes contributor network and yodeling mime academy, Davey Winder says “Apple's iPhone FaceID Hacked In Less Than 120 Seconds.” (Tip o’ the antlers to @designheretic.)

“Hacked”, you will not be surprised to discover, is used somewhat loosely in this context.

What you need to know is this is an extremely clever and dangerous hack that that puts you in danger right now. Its keep element is just one thing: free access to the unconscious body of the iPhone owner. That’s it.

Kensington’s Dual Monitor Arm sounds like a nice fit...

Some research has determined “sitting disease” as the cause for numerous health issues. The 90-degree sitting position that many of us take on for hours on end during the work week may be a cause for concern.

Eighteen research studies in which almost 800,000 men and women participated show that people who live a sedentary life, largely sitting at a desk for hours on end every day, have a significantly higher risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Other studies cast doubt on those results, but you can read a good article about all this here. So if you want to play it safe,  Kensington SmartFit One-Touch Height Adjustable Dual Monitor Arm is a viable option at a decent price (about $140 at...

Facebook dark mode in testing, after it was promised...

Facebook dark mode has been one of the most frequent requests from app users, with the company promising it earlier this year, and it seems it is now in testing.

As with many unannounced tests in social media apps, it was discovered by computer science student Jane Manchun Wong digging into the code. It was Wong who recently spotted a “snooze” feature in Twitter that allows users to temporarily silence notifications…

Eventually we'll get a macOS with 3D interface...

Could macOS 10.15 — the operating system update that will follow this fall's macOS 10.14 Catalina -- sport a 3D interface? Who knows? But a future version likely will.

Natural human interfaces, based upon hand gestures in free space, represent the next big evolutionary jump in consumer and industrial electronics. Natural interfaces utilize advanced 3-D vision technology to interpret actions by users -- such as hand gestures or other movement-based input -- as commands for the device.

However, unlike the mouse or the touchscreen, with which the user has to make physical contact, there's no physical device that/s touched. Rather, the TV, computer or other appliance simply observes the user and the user’s surroundings, and derives meaning from what it sees. With the same ease that an officer can direct traffic at a busy intersection with a few natural gestures, we will be able to convey our intent to our devices, Spare predicted.

The Apple Card is not magic

A select set of consumers are finally starting to get their Apple Cards, and the web is overflowing with banal analysis about every mundane detail. Did you hear the one about the guy with a credit score of 620 who got approved? Gasp!

Look, I get it. This is Apple, after all. Anything the company does gets dissected, fawned over, argued about, and hot-taked into oblivion. But the Apple Card is often mistakenly considered to be far more noteworthy than it is: outside of the fact that the Apple Card is, well, from Apple, it’s not very remarkable at all.

Apple Card units begin arriving at customers’ homes

The Apple Card recently rolled out to a limited number of customers via the Wallet app, and some customers are beginning to receive their physical, titanium Apple Card in the mail.

Over at The Verge, Nilay Patel shared photos of his Apple Card. The card was revealed to be thicker than his other metal and plastic credit cards, weighing in around 14.75, making it slightly heavier than the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card but lighter than an American Express Platinum.

Aaron Andino shared the following unboxing video of his Apple Card, the card and packaging remaining consistent with pre-launch photos that had leaked out into the ether.

The physical Apple Card, made out of titanium, features a clean design with an Apple logo, a chip, and a name. There’s no card number or expiration date on the card, nor is there a CVV on the back. Instead, these details are stored in the Wallet app for...

Rumor: Apple could opt for “Pro” monicker with next-...

Apple may go the “Pro” naming route with the next-gen iPhone models.

CoinX, a noted and reliable Twitter leaker, said that Apple looks like it will use the Pro suffix branding for the new iPhone.

The source previously corrected named the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR a week before their debut. They also stated the exact weight of the XS Max, described the default wallpaper set and even the asymmetric grille hole arrangement seen in the iPhone XS line.

While CoinX doesn’t clarify the naming, he stated that there are several ways Apple could incorporate the “Pro” moniker into its upcoming iPhone lineup.

This could mean that Apple is readying an “iPhone” and “iPhone Pro” tiered lineup, using the new XR as the “iPhone” and the triple-camera iPhone 11 as “iPhone Pro”.

Apple could also retain the numbers and opt for both “iPhone 11” and “iPhone 11” product names upon launch.

The “Pro” features could model themselves after the current...

6 upgrades Apple’s iPad Pro needs before an...

With just a few weeks to go until Apple kicks off its furious fall release schedule, the rumors are in full swing. We might have learned the name of the new iPhone and the possible replacement for 3D Touch, but the latest rumor is a head scratcher. Apparently, Apple will be adding the same triple camera array that’s coming to the iPhone 11 to the iPad Pro, marking a giant leap from the current 12-megapixel single-camera it currently has.

We’d like to dismiss this rumor as ridiculous, but it comes from Mac Otakara’s Chinese supple sources (via MacRumors), which have been accurate in the past. So let’s pretend it’s true. Here’s my question: Why? Taking pictures with an 11- or 12.9-inch tablet is already awkward for both the photographer and the people forced...

Parallels Announces Parallels Desktop 15 for Mac

Today Parallels — which is now part of Canadian software powerhouse Corel — announced Parallels Desktop 15 for Mac. Each year, Parallels makes a major update to the virtual machine app, and 2019 brings some excellent changes.

Parallels Desktop 15 works with macos 10.15 catalina both as a host and a guest operating system

When Parallels Desktop 15 ships — soon — it will be ready for macOS 10.15 Catalina as both a host and guest operating system. In other words, Parallels Desktop 15 works with Catalina as the Mac’s operating system, and it can also be set up as a guest OS for testing apps.

Of course, the primary reason for the existence of Parallels Desktop is that many Mac users need to run Windows apps because of corporate dictates or personal preference. Users can move old PCs to the Mac as a virtual machine, import virtual machines that they’ve been using for a...
