Today’s earnings call won’t tell us the usual things...

In normal times, today’s earnings call would tell us two important things about AAPL: how well the company did last quarter, and how well it expects to do in the current one. But these are not normal times.

Although today’s earnings report will answer the first question, there’s widespread agreement among analysts that the Q3 results are not particularly important – the coronavirus crisis has hit Apple’s supply chain, and dampened demand, so the numbers are going to say more about the state of the global economy than they do about Apple specifically …

Future Apple Watches, iPhones could be (sorta) self-...

Future Apple Watches and iPhones could have limited self-cleaning features according to two newly granted Apple patents.

In the patent filings, the tech giant notes that some mobile electronic devices are equipped with sensors and transducers that enable the devices to perform far more functionalities than communications. Media playing, photography, location detection, online shopping, social media, online banking, calendar and health applications such as heartbeat, blood pressure and blood oxygen level measurement are among the apps that an Apple Watch and iPhone can provide. communication device can facilitate. What’s more, they can be equipped with environmental sensors, such as pressure sensors, humidity sensors and gas sensors.

‘Apple Glasses’ could allow you to directly...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20200241629) for “manipulation of virtual objects using a tracked physical object.” It involves the rumored “Apple Glasses” and would allow users to move a physical object to manipulate an onscreen augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality (AR/VR/MR) image.

In the patent data, Apple notes that various electronic devices exist, such as head-mound devices (also known as headsets and HMDs), with displays that present users with a computer-generated reality (CGR) environment in which they may be fully immersed in a surrounding physical environment, fully immersed in a virtual reality environment comprising virtual objects, or anywhere in between. While direct manipulation of physical objects in the surrounding physical environment is available to users naturally, the same is not true for virtual objects in the CGR environment.

Apple says that lacking a means to directly interact with virtual objects...

Developers of messaging app, Telegram, accuse Apple...

Another day, another antitrust complaint. The developers of the encrypted messenger app, Telegram (pictured), told the European Union Commission that it isn’t fair that iOS users can only download software from Apple, reports The Financial Times.

In a complaint to EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager, Telegram, which has more than 400 million users, said Apple must "allow users to have the opportunity of downloading software outside of the ‌App Store‌.”

This at least the third antitrust complaint to the EU Commission. Last month Rakuten's Kobo subsidiary, Kobo alleged that Apple's iBookStore commission rate is anti-competitive when it also promotes its own Apple Books service.

Apple is also facing formal investigation into alleged anticompetitive practices over both the App Store and Apple Pay. The European Commission has...

Law360 reports that Apple has urged a Texas federal court to delay its upcoming US$700 million retrial with VirnetX, saying infection rates in the areas surrounding the courthouse are so high that it's "a virtual certainty that someone with COVID-19 will be at the trial," according to a motion unsealed Wednesday.

This is part of a legal battle that’s been raging for six years. In January 2014, VirnetX, considered by many (including me) to be a “patent troll,”  filed a motion with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas seeking to supplement its infringement contentions against Apple, the defendant in a patent infringement lawsuit. The tech giant is accused of violating four patents....

Telegram rails against 'colossal' App...

Secure messaging platform Telegram has become the third big developer to file an antitrust complaint against Apple in the European Union, railing against Apple's control and fees on the App Store.Filed on Thursday morning, Telegram's complaint with the European Commission is mostly focused on Apple's fees and rules it implements in the App Store. Specifically cited were Telegram's attempt to open a gaming platform in 2016, that Apple shut down, claiming it violated app store rules.Telegram says that because of Apple's rejection, the company as a whole "risked being deleted from the App Store." It isn't clear why the company believes this is the case, as apps can be rejected during the App Store review process, without impacting other apps that a company has developed. At present, no supporting documents are publicly available to validate this claim.

Universal Movies’ Future releases to be shown on...

A deal between AMC Theaters and Universal will lead to new movies being released in online platforms earlier than usual.

New movie releases from Universal Movies will be released just 17 days after it shows up in theaters on iTunes and Apple TV, which means those who want to watch it can just wait two and a half weeks instead of 75 days.

Universal Movies has been releasing movies digitally with great success. Their latest, ‘Trolls World Tour’ garnered an impressive $100 million in just 3 weeks. With COVID-19 shutting down theaters, AMC stipulated that they won’t be releasing Universal Movies films if they kept with the digital releases.

An agreement was reached between the two companies, with the 17-day window being the result.

AMC and other theaters have delayed releases due to the pandemic, including titles such as ‘Mulan’, ‘The Quiet Place 2’, ‘Tenet’ and others. The transition to digital may be the only way these companies can continue.

A ‘new’ memorabilia signed by Steve Jobs is currently on the auction block.

A Jobs-featured Fortune Magazine that’s signed by the former CEO will be auctioned off on July 30. The bid starts at $11,000, and the piece itself comes with an interesting backstory.

The signed Fortune Magazine will be auctioned in the Nate D Sanders Auctions. Its description reads ‘To Terry / steve jobs’ with the lower case signature. Terry was a former chauffeur who used to drive Jobs, and asked him to sign the magazine at one point. Job agreed but then notified the limo company and complained...

If you’re a long-time Mac user or a new one, it’s possible you’re only aware of the Delete key, which is technically a “backward delete”: it deletes characters to the left of the current cursor in English and other languages that read left-to-right. It has its own symbol: ⌫. On various vintages of keyboards, you might find the word Delete, a leftward-pointing arrow ←, or both the arrow and the label. (For Mac users, it’s nearly always Delete; Backspace is more of a…Windows word.)

On extended keyboards, you may also find a “forward delete” option. It may also be labeled Delete or Del, and it has the forward delete symbol on it: ⌦. Press this and characters to the right of the insertion point are deleted.

Qualcomm Hints That the 5G iPhone Might Not Arrive...

Qualcomm's Q3 earnings report might indicate a delay for Apple's upcoming 5G iPhones, with the company highlighting a "partial impact from the delay of a global 5G flagship phone launch" for its fourth quarter projections (which covers July, August, and September earnings). The Verge reports: Looking at the calendar of upcoming phone releases, it's hard to imagine that Qualcomm is talking about any device other than the upcoming 5G iPhones, which are expected to arrive this fall. Typically, Apple releases its new iPhone in September, and it's one of the few upcoming devices that would sell in large enough numbers that Qualcomm might need to disclose the material impact on an earnings call. There are already rumors circulating of delays for Apple's 5G lineup due to production slowdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with Reuters, chief financial officer Akash Palkhiwala indicated that the delay likely wouldn't be too long for the unnamed phone, describing it as "a...

When a customer gets refunded for an app they purchased, Apple doesn't refund the 30% cut they took from the developer, says developer Simeon Saens of Two Lives Left. While [online] payment processors generally don't refund fees on refunded payments, "the App Store doesn't position itself as a payments processor the way Stripe does, so it sounds really weird that they would act like one," writes HN user chadlavi. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says in a tweet: This is a critical consideration in these 30% store fees. They come off the top, before funding any developer costs. As a result, Apple and Google make more profit from most developers' games than the developers themselves. That is terribly unfair and exploitative. "If the app store took a 3% chunk and never refunded it regardless of the ongoing status of the transaction, that would put them right in line with other payment processors," adds chadlavi. "It would also still net them billions of dollars, I think!"

Apple facing another multi-state lawsuit over ‘...

Apple is facing another “Batterygate” lawsuit regarding its iPhone "throttling" practices, this time from Arizona attorney general Mark Brnovich, reports Reuters.

Last week, a document released by a tech watchdog group showed the Texas attorney general might sue Apple for such violations in connection with a multi-state probe, without specifying charges, the article adds. Since at least October 2018, investigators have asked Apple for data about “unexpected shutdowns” of iPhones and the company’s throttling, or slowing down, of the devices through power management software, documents Reuters says.

Apple has admitted to occasionally slowing iPhones with older batteries to avoid unexpected shutdowns. Related lawsuits have alleged that Apple's actions violated...

Arizona Leads Multi-State Probe Into Older iPhones...

Arizona is leading a multi-U.S. state probe into whether Apple's deliberate slowing of older iPhones violated deceptive trade practice laws, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing documents. From a report: Last week, a separate document released by a tech watchdog group showed the Texas attorney general might sue Apple for such violations in connection with a multi-state probe, without specifying charges. In the ongoing probe since at least October 2018, investigators have asked Apple for data about "unexpected shutdowns" of iPhones and the company's throttling, or slowing down, of the devices through power management software, documents Reuters obtained through a public records request showed. Apple came under fire in 2017 when Primate Labs, the maker of software for measuring a phone's processor speeds, revealed that some iPhones became slower as they aged.

How to use your iPhone as a webcam for video...

Just because you’re working from home now doesn’t mean you’re off the hook when it comes to meetings. And just because you don’t have a spare webcam around doesn’t mean you need to peel back the tape that’s covering your laptop’s camera—as long as you have an iPhone or an iPad, you can easily turn it into a makeshift webcam.

Update 07/29/20: Since we first published this article, we have reviewed a new entry in this field, Camo. It may be the best way yet to use your iPhone as a Mac webcam, though the full version is not cheap.

There are a few different apps you can use, but we recommend Kinoni’s EpocCam Webcam. Not only is it easy to set up, but the free version with ads and occasional watermarking works with both Mac and PC (iVCam is a good option if you’re using Windows, and...

iOS Alexa App gets an update and redesign

Amazon’s Alexa gets an update for the iPhone which adds a personalized home screen and native features.

The Alexa app for iOS gets overhauled with several redesigns, including shifting the focus away from third party skills and a personalized Home screen.

The Home section now emphasizes the Alexa button, which gives users a straightforward way to activate the voice assistant. Right below are several ‘suggestions’ per user, including music playback control, setting alarms and more. Advanced features, like Skills, Routines, Reminders and Settings have been sent to the ‘More’ button.

Alexa users should be able to get suggestions and tips more easily. Amazon hopes that the redesign can make users adapt better with Alexa on their iPhone and through Amazon voice speakers like the Echo.

The new update should be available to download now on iOS, Android and Fire OS devices. Amazon mentioned that all supported devices should have it by late August.

Want to run Mac OS 8 on your Mac? Now you can

Hey, you Mac old timers (like me). How many times have you said to yourself, “Man, I could use a round of Duke Nukem 3D right now!” or wished you could go back to a version of Adobe Photoshop that didn’t have all the tools you need? (Okay, never, but play along with me here.)

Well, now you can go back to the old days of the Mac with a Mac OS 8 emulator, written by Felix Rieseberg. He created a JavaScript app which includes a virtual machine that emulates a Macintosh Quadra 900 running Mac OS 8.1. The 261MB compressed download expands into an app that runs that system in a window on your modern Mac.

Phil Schiller, in Reuters interview, says Apple...

Reuters:

When the App Store launched in 2008 with 500 apps, Apple executives viewed it as an experiment in offering a compellingly low commission rate to attract developers, Philip W. Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing and top executive for the App Store, told Reuters in an interview.

“One of the things we came up with is, we’re going to treat all apps in the App Store the same – one set of rules for everybody, no special deals, no special terms, no special code, everything applies to all developers the same. That was not the case in PC software. Nobody thought like that. It was a complete flip around of how the whole system was going to work,” Schiller said.

And this bit of history:

In the mid-2000s, software sold through physical stores involved paying for shelf space and prominence, costs that could eat 50% of the retail price, said Ben Bajarin, head of consumer technologies at Creative Strategies. Small developers could...

Om Malik: Tech CEOs in DC is a waste of time

Om:

In a few hours, the chief executives of four major technology companies — Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are going to be hauled up in front of our politicians. I am surprised to see Microsoft omitted from this list, though they should be in here with the big four. They will have to defend themselves from the charges that they stifle competition as a result of their market dominance.

And:

The short version (in case you want to skip reading the piece) — all sizzle no steak. In other words, you could (and should) avoid even thinking about it. You are not going to see the four chieftains say anything that damages their business or upsets the status quo. It is not going to impact the employees or the stocks of these companies. Hell, it is not even a photo-op: the whole non-drama is going to play out on Zoom.

Read the whole piece. A number of hot takes, all worth reading. I’m not convinced these hearings will turn into any meaningful change,...

AMC Theatres, Universal collapsing theatrical window...

The Hollywood Reporter:

In a stunning reversal, AMC Theatres has struck a historic agreement with Universal that will allow the studio’s movies to be made available on premium video-on-demand after just 17 days of play in cinemas, including three weekends, the two companies announced Tuesday.

The deal — which presently only covers AMC’s U.S. locations — shatters the traditional theatrical window, a longstanding policy that has required studios to play their films on the big screen for nearly three months before making films available in the home.

Key to this deal is that AMC will get revenue from the video on demand showings. In effect, AMC’s theaters will be paid to let someone else show movies.

Will we see a return to normal movie-going behavior once COVID-19 is in the rear view mirror? Or are we seeing a behavior changing milestone in the model of going to a theater to see a movie? I suspect the latter, given the incredible wealth of quality content...

The Morning Show and the pandemic: Rewrites

Deadline:

When Apple TV+ hit The Morning Show had its Season 2 production stopped by COVID-19, no one rested on their laurels. According to Emmy nominee Mark Duplass, who played beleaguered producer Chip Black, the show is in rewrites to reflect the current global situation—something they also did in Season 1 as a response to #MeToo.

Follow the headline link to read the short interview with Duplass.

Some shows have returned to very cautious production, but most are taking the approach of The Morning Show and using this time for rewrites. I suspect when Hollywood does get the all clear to return to full scale production, we’re going to see a boom in creativity, some informed by the learning that comes along with all the remote collaboration, and some based simply on the massive amount of uninterrupted writing time.

CEO Tim Cook explains why Apple isn’t monopolistic

Apple ‘s Tim Cook and other tech companies’ CEOs will appear before the House Judiciary Committee and the Antitrust Subcommittee today. Apple has submitted Tim Cook’s prepared opening statement in full, which you can read here, but following are some of the highlights:

° “Apple does not have a dominant market share in any market where we do business. That is not just true for iPhone; it is true for any product category.

° “We created the App Store in 2008 as a feature of iPhone. Launching with a little more than 500 apps, it was our ambitious attempt to dramatically expand the feature and customizability of every user’s device. We wanted to create a safe and trusted place for users to discover apps — and a means of providing a secure and supportive way for developers to develop, test, and distribute apps to iPhone...

As noted by 9to5Mac, Apple is sold out of the US$1,299.95 LG UltraFine 5K Display, which is listed as "Currently Unavailable" from the online Apple Store and is unavailable for pickup from Apple retail stores.

This has happened before. In February 2017, the display — the one Apple promotes for use with its Mac laptops — was unavailable. But two months later, an upgraded model went on sale. The new unavailability status could mean:

° Apple plans to make its own external display for those of us who can’t afford the $5,000 Apple Pro Display XDR.

° A revamped version of the UltraFine 5K display is coming.

° LG is facing production/supply issues like many companies in this time of pandemic.
