Apple's removable battery standard could change...

Apple's engineers are researching how to best make a series of standardized enclosures that would allow users to routinely swap batteries between higher-powered devices like an iMac, and lower powered ones like keyboards or other peripherals.

Multiple devices would use a standardized case to provide interchangeability between different brands.
If implemented, the technology could lead to a universal standard for battery interchangeability and could reduce or eliminate the need to plug every wireless device in to charge it.

The last Apple device with a "user replaceable" battery was the 2009 MacBook, making it 15 years since users could casually swap out batteries on an Apple mobile computing device to keep it going. Apple isn't alone in using built-in, non-replaceable batteries.

Detail from the patent showing one form of wraparound iPhone display
Apple files countless patent applications every year, and it is granted something like countless minus one. Just because there's a patent, just because it's been granted, it does not follow that Apple will make whatever the idea is — except sometimes, surely, it must be very keen.

Perhaps especially now when Apple has been granted a patent — that it has already been granted. This happens when the company puts through an amended version after the original is granted, and very often it's close to impossible to spot what has changed.

Original Macintosh inspires 3D-printed Mac Studio...

YouTuber Scott Yu-Jan is back at it again, this time fusing a Mac Studio and an iPad mini into a design inspired by the original Macintosh.

Inspired by the 1984 Macintosh, designer and YouTuber Scott Yu-Jan decided to see if he could find a way to make use of his underutilized iPad mini while at his desk. He settled on creating a dock for his Mac Studio that would use the iPad mini as a secondary screen.

The video shows his design process as he quickly comes up with ideas for what the dock can do. After scrapping a few he deems unrealistic — including a pair of cupholders in the back — he finally chooses his design.

macOS Sonoma update fixes USB hubs, Java crashes,...

Following iOS and iPadOS updates late last week, Apple has released a complementary update to macOS Sonoma with security updates and some big bug fixes.

macOS Sonoma 14.4 update breaks USB monitor hubs
It's still not fully clear what the update contains in its entirety. The patch notes displayed for a manual update mention the updates provide "important bug fixes and security updates," and that it is "recommended for all users."

The update notes also include a link to details of Apple's security releases. The page is not yet updated, however — and still lacks detail on what was updated in iOS 17.4.1.

Consumers Sue Apple, Taking Page From Justice...

Apple has been hit with a flurry of new consumer lawsuits accusing the iPhone maker of monopolizing the smartphone market, piggybacking on a sweeping antitrust case lodged by the U.S. Justice Department and 15 states last week. From a report: At least three proposed class actions have been filed since Friday in California and New Jersey federal courts by iPhone owners who claim Apple inflated the cost of its products through anticompetitive conduct. The lawsuits, seeking to represent millions of consumers, mirror the Justice Department's claims that Apple violated U.S. antitrust law by suppressing technology for messaging apps, digital wallets and other items that would have increased competition in the market for smartphones.

DOJ Antitrust Lawsuit Says Apple Is Causing Android...

FrankOVD shares a report: Here's a paragraph from the DOJ's antitrust lawsuit against Apple in full: "In addition to degrading the quality of third-party messaging apps, Apple affirmatively undermines the quality of rival smartphones. For example, if an iPhone user messages a non-iPhone user in Apple Messages -- the default messaging app on an iPhone -- then the text appears to the iPhone user as a green bubble and incorporates limited functionality: the conversation is not encrypted, videos are pixelated and grainy, and users cannot edit messages or see typing indicators.

"This signals to users that rival smartphones are lower quality because the experience of messaging friends and family who do not own iPhones is worse -- even though Apple, not the rival smartphone, is the cause of that degraded user experience. Many non-iPhone users also experience social stigma, exclusion, and blame for 'breaking' chats where other participants own iPhones. This effect is particularly...

Apple testing the Apple Pencil with the Apple Vision Pro
When Apple released the Apple Vision Pro, it made a big deal about how the spatial computing headset didn't rely on any sort of handheld controller. Instead, the Apple Vision Pro relies on the "gaze and pinch" system.

Apple has a monopoly on the Steve Jobs Theater
Apple's App Store, iPhone and its services including Messages are getting extreme scrutiny by governments globally. Many of those governments seem skeptical that their citizens are buying expensive things from Apple because they are better, rather than being forced to buy things from Apple that are better because they have no real choice.

Is the free market failing, and should governments intervene to fix things?

Using its new powers under the Digital Markets Act, the European Union has announced sweeping probes into US Big Tech, including multiple investigations of Apple.

As of early March 2024, Apple has enabled the creation of third-party rivals to its own App Store, specifically and solely because it has been forced to under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). As part of that same DMA, the EU now has the authority and regulatory powers to investigate qualifying firms and, if it sees fit, apply steep fines for any perceived breaches of the law.

Now the EU has formally announced the start of several such investigations, covering Apple, Meta, and Google's parent company...

EU Launches Probes Into Apple, Meta, Google Under...

The European Union has launched investigations into Apple, Meta and Google under its sweeping new digital-competition law, adding to the regulatory scrutiny large U.S. tech companies are facing worldwide. From a report: The suite of probes [Editor's note: the link may be paywalled; official press release here] announced Monday are the first under the EU's Digital Markets Act law, which took effect earlier this month. They come less than a week after the Justice Department sued Apple over allegations it makes it difficult for competitors to integrate with the iPhone, ultimately raising prices for customers. Apple and Google will now face EU scrutiny of how they are complying with rules that say they must allow app developers to inform customers about alternative offers outside those companies' main app stores. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said it is concerned about constraints the tech companies place on developers' ability to freely communicate with users and...
