Today the Apple Pencil lineup got more confusing than ever. When Apple introduced the new Apple Pencil Pro, it chose not to remove any of the three existing models from sale. This means there are four Pencil options for new customers.

However, what if you already have an existing Apple Pencil and simply want to upgrade your iPad to the enticing new M4 iPad Pro?

We have some bad news for you.

New Apple Pencil Pro adds a fourth stylus option for...

Macworld

For some reason, Apple sells three accessories all named Apple Pencil, each with different features and compatibility. The solution? A fourth Apple Pencil!

The new Apple Pencil Pro may seem like an unnecessary complication to a stylus lineup for an accessory that shouldn’t need a lineup, but there’s no arguing that it doesn’t deliver the features everyone wants. Apple Pencil Pro looks just like the 2nd-generation Apple Pencil, and it supports all the same features including magnetic charging and pairing, double-tap, and tilt and pressure sensitivity. But it also adds four new features we’ve wanted in an Apple Pencil for a long time:

  • A gyroscope that lets you “roll” the pencil to change the orientation of shaped brushes and tools.
  • A taptic engine for haptic feedback.
  • Find My support.
  • Squeeze sensitivity, to open palettes or change tool options like weights or colors....

Brand new Final Cut Camera app for iPhone and iPad...

Today at the iPad-focused ‘Let loose’ event, Apple not only introduced compelling new iPad hardware, it also had a first-party software story to tell.

The main highlights of that story were Final Cut Pro 2 and Logic Pro 2 for iPadOS. These major updates to Apple’s iPad-exclusive versions of its pro software suite seem set to take great advantage of advancements like the iPad Pro’s M4 chip.

Included in that announcement, though, was news of a brand new app coming to the iPhone and iPad: Final Cut Camera.

The new iPad Pro is finally here with an M4 chip and...

Macworld

Apple introduced a major update to the iPad Pro during Tuesday’s “Let Loose” event. Promoting the new iPads as AI-capable tablets, the new 13-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro have several upgrades over the models they replace—with a higher starting price to go with them.

At the heart of the iPad Pro is an M4 System on a Chip, a big leap in silicon from the M2 chips they replace. The M4 has a 10-core CPU, with 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores, and Apple claims that the M4 is 1.5 times faster than the M2 in CPU performance. The M4 has a new display engine that is 50 percent faster than the M2, and a 10-core GPU that is four times faster. The iPad Pro has 8GB (256GB or 512GB SSD models) or 16GB (1TB or 2TB models) of RAM. Learn more about the M4.

The M4 also has a 16-core NPU, which...

New iPad Pro loses ultra-wide camera, fastest spec...

While the new iPad Pro with M4 is a major step forward across the board, there a couple gotchas to be aware of. Firstly, with this generation, Apple has removed the ultra-wide camera from the rear camera module altogether.

Also, while Apple touts the performance jump of the 10-core CPU found inside the new M4 chip, that chip variant is exclusive to the 1 TB and 2 TB iPad Pro models. Lower storage iPads get a 9-core CPU. They also have half the RAM …

What is nano-texture glass and do I need it?

Macworld

On some Apple products, including the Apple Studio Display and M4 iPad Pro, a feature called nano-texture glass is available. This is something that was first introduced on the incredibly expensive Pro Display XDR, before coming to other Apple products beginning with the now-discontinued 27-inch iMac. So, what is it, and should you spend hundreds more to have it adorn your screen?

What is Nano-texture glass?

Glare is often a problem in brightly lit offices and homes, which can render the large, glossy displays little more than hugely elaborate mirrors. One way to combat this is through matte displays. Opting for the new nano-texture glass will drastically reduce glare while avoiding the frostiness and washed-out colors that are often the compromise made when opting for...

Apple debuts M4 processor in new iPad Pro

Macworld

Apple’s new iPad Pro is powered by the M4 processor, skipping the M3 entirely. Apple has never debuted an M-series processor in a product other than the Mac, so the launch of this new processor in the iPad Pro is an unexpected surprise.

The M4 is made on an enhanced 3nm process and contains over 28 billion transistors and has the following advanced features in the iPad Pro:

  • 4 high-performance CPU cores with improved branch prediction and wider decode and execution engines.
  • 6 high-efficiency CPU cores with improved branch prediction and a deeper execution engine.
  • 10-core GPU built on the same architecture as M3, with dynamic caching, mesh shaders, and ray tracing acceleration.

The M4 chip, which powers the new iPad Pros, delivers a 50% faster CPU and improved efficiency compared to the previous-gen M2 chip. Apple has also introduced updated accessories, including a redesigned Magic Keyboard with an aluminum palm rest and function key row, and the Apple Pencil Pro with squeeze gestures, Find My location tracking, and haptic feedback. Is the Apple Store down? Here’s why

Macworld

When the Apple Store goes offline it’s usually an indication that Apple is about to launch a new product. However, that’s not always the case—on May 7, the morning of the Let Loose iPad event, Apple didn’t pull its store offline as it usually does.

Why is the Apple Store down?

Are you having trouble browsing the Apple Store online? There are a few reasons why the Apple Store might be offline. It could be because Apple is preparing to launch new products at an event, or it could be because Apple is about to start taking pre-orders for a new product.

If you are reading this story and it’s the day of an Apple Event then yes, the store is down. Apple has taken it offline while it prepares for new product launches. The store always tends to go offline just before an event–to find out...

If you are concerned about your privacy and security online using a VPN could give you some reassurance. Apple provides various measures in macOS that make Macs more secure, but if you want to ensure that the connection between your Mac and the internet is protected, rather than the computer itself, you need a VPN.

Using a VPN essentially makes you invisible on the web–your data is encrypted, your IP address is hidden, and you can even make it look like you are surfing from another country. This latter reason is the key motive many people using a VPN have: they want to access services that are locked to a particular region, such as accessing U.S. Netflix from the U.K or...

Apple's iPhone Spyware Problem Is Getting Worse

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Wired: In April, Apple sent notifications to iPhone users in 92 countries, warning them they'd been targeted with spyware. "Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID," the notification reads. Users quickly took to social media sites including X, trying to work out what the notification meant. Many of those targeted were based inIndia, but others in Europe also reported receiving Apple's warning. Weeks later, little is still known about the latest iPhone attacks. Former smartphone giant Blackberry, now a security firm, has released research indicating they are linked to a Chinese spyware campaign dubbed "LightSpy," but Apple spokesperson Shane Bauer says this is inaccurate.

While Apple says the latest spyware notifications aren't linked to LightSpy, the spyware remains a growing threat, particularly to people who may be...

Tomorrow at the ‘Let loose’ event, Apple is expected to debut next-generation iPad Pro and iPad Air models alongside some brand new iPad accessories.

The iPad Pro seems set to be the focal point, with a brand new OLED display, thinner body, and very possibly the launch of Apple’s M4 chip. New versions of the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil are also expected, both of which will likely be exclusive to the iPad Pro.

Evidence found on Apple’s Japanese site suggests the new Pencil may be dubbed the Apple Pencil Pro. Which got me thinking:...

Apple may add a Pro model to the Apple Pencil lineup

Macworld

While Apple’s “Let Loose” event on Tuesday could be one of the shortest events in the company’s history at about 35 minutes, there will be plenty jammed into the short runtime. And if another report holds up, Apple may spend some of that time talking about a high-end Apple Pencil.

On Monday, Apple updated its websites worldwide with a new animation of the “Let Loose” logo, one where you can erase the image if you move a cursor over it on a Mac, or erase it with your finger on the iPhone and iPad. According to an X post by @ribu_ap712, the updated Apple website in Japan had code that referred to an “Apple Pencil...

2024 iPad Pro: Everything you need to know about...

Macworld

The current iPad range is one of the most populated we’ve seen. It includes two iterations of the standard iPad, the iPad mini, the iPad Air, and the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, so there’s plenty to choose from. It seems Apple isn’t stopping there, though; rumors suggest it could be adding an even larger iPad Pro to the line-up. Here’s everything we know about the next-generation iPad Pro.

2024 iPad Pro release date: When will the M3 iPad Pro arrive?

We were hoping Apple would hold a spring event to launch the new iPads, but after the M3 MacBook Air arrived in early March, we had lost hope. However,...

Today in a subscriber-only post, analyst Ross Young reported that he and his team have heard rumblings about a new iPhone display size being introduced with 2025’s iPhone 17 lineup.

This new display size would take the spot of the current iPhone Plus model, continuing to offer a larger iPhone option at a more affordable price. However, in a surprising move, this reported new size will take the iPhone Plus in a direction that will likely be unexpected by many.

Last week at the White House Correspondents Dinner, SNL’s Colin Jost joked about how The New York Times—the country’s most successful news publication—was only kept alive by Wordle and other puzzle games. The Times didn’t appreciate the remark.

Apple has clearly been paying attention to the Times’ success, though, as its latest strategy for boosting Apple News+ subscribers is a heaping dose of puzzle games. After launching crosswords last fall, another News+ game is on its...

As we await tomorrow’s iPad event, we’re looking back at a playful Apple marketing campaign that you’ve probably never seen. That’s because it ran in a single market at the time: Japan.

Welcome to our weekly Apple Breakfast column, which includes all the Apple news you missed last week in a handy bite-sized roundup. We call it Apple Breakfast because we think it goes great with a Monday morning cup of coffee or tea, but it’s cool if you want to give it a read during lunch or dinner hours too.

Is this event another non-event?

Apple started running virtual press events during the pandemic when in-person gatherings made little sense and at various times were frowned upon or literally illegal. But Apple has largely stuck with that format even as health concerns lessened and its own employees were herded back into the office. Why is that? Because virtual events have advantages far beyond the containment of disease.

Aside from avoiding the logistical headaches of getting a thousand bad-tempered journalists from around the world to the same place at the same time, a pre-recorded video...

New iPads are great, but longtime Apple users have always wanted to see a touchscreen Mac, something along the lines of the Microsoft Surface. Reports of such a device by Apple have barely surfaced (pun intended) in recent years, but a new patent offers some hope that itt may still one day arrive.

Apple was recently granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that covers exactly this. Patent 11,320,869 is titled, “Hinged keyboard accessory having multiple installation modes for a tablet computing device” and describes a tablet accessory that fits the description of a Magic Keyboard-like...

Is Apple TV+ having a quality crisis?

When Apple first entered the TV streaming market, it came with a unique approach. It wasn’t focused on creating the most content, famously launching Apple TV+ with only a handful of shows. Similarly, its aspirations never seemed to be growing into the largest streamer. Despite mainstream hits like Ted Lasso, the service is still relatively niche.

All of that was okay, because Apple’s focus was on one thing: quality. Making the best of the best.

Some have called TV+ the new HBO. At one point, I would have agreed. Apple remarkably won a Best Picture Oscar for CODA, a prize Netflix has still never won. Ted Lasso scored back-to-back...

Apple reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that topped estimates, despite a 10% drop in iPhone sales. The company also announced that its board had authorized $110 billion in share repurchases, "a 22% increase over last year's $90 billion authorization," notes CNBC. "It's the largest buyback in history, ahead of Apple's previous repurchases." From the report: Apple did not provide formal guidance, but Apple CEO Tim Cook told CNBC's Steve Kovach that overall sales would grow in the "low single digits" during the June quarter. Apple posted $81.8 billion in revenue during the year-ago June quarter and LSEG analysts were looking for a forecast of $83.23 billion. On an earnings call with analysts, Apple finance chief Luca Maestri said the company expected the current quarter will deliver double-digit year-over-year percentage growth in iPad sales. What to expect from Apple’s May 7 “Let loose” event

Best MacBook Pro deals this month

Macworld

Apple announced new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips at an event on October 30. The upgraded MacBook Pro models arrived less than a year after Apple launched the M2 Pro and M2 Max variants of the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro (in January 2023). The late-2023 MacBook Pro update also marks the demise of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which has been replaced by a 14-inch model with the standard M3 chip, unfortunately at a higher price than the discontinued model.

If you want to buy a MacBook Pro you will be able to save money if you choose one of the M2-series models, which will now be discounted by resellers as they sell off the discontinued stock.

However, you should keep in mind that, with a mixture of price rises and declines across the range in comparison to the previous generation, it could be hard to spot a really good deal. Luckily we are here to help.
