Today the Unicode Consortium previewed the new emoji that are expected to be added to Apple’s upcoming OS updates, including iOS and iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and more. Though the list isn’t finalized yet, it’s likely that everything outlined will be approved and added to the official set of emoji that platform owners like Apple and Google will adopt.

One standout from the list is a new ‘face with bags under eyes’ emoji that makes me feel truly seen. It’s undoubtedly bound to be one of the most popular additions. Other new emoji include a shovel, fingerprint, beet, and more.

Beet, exhausted face, splatter emoji could be coming...

Macworld

If you think there are far too many emoji already, get ready for some bad news: There are always more emoji on their way. The conveyor belt of emojis never stops, and new emojis will keep arriving on your iPhone until the heat death of the emojiverse.

We’ve now got a good idea of the emoji that the conveyor belt is likely to disgorge next year, thanks to the Unicode Consortium publishing the proposals currently expected to feature in version 16.0 of its emoji list. (At time of writing the latest set of emoji is version 15.1.) Version 16.0 is currently slated to include new emoji for:

Best VPN for iPhone: Unlock content with these...

Macworld

There are two main reasons why someone might want to install a VPN on an iPhone. One important reason is to protect their privacy and increase their security. Another key reason is that a VPN can be used to make it look like you are based in a different country, which can unlock content, such as movies and TV shows, that wouldn’t be available where you are.

If you are concerned about how secure the data on you iPhone is a VPN may be a solution that could give you peace of mind. We have a selection of VPNs for iPhone that we recommend below. But first we’ll quickly address why you might, or might not, need a VPN to protect the data on your iPhone.

Do I need a VPN on my iPhone?

Whether you need a VPN on your iPhone depends on your reasons for wanting one. If you were looking for the added security and privacy of a VPN, then Apple covers much of that with iCloud Private Relay. This feature of iCloud+ (which...

MacBook Air and Pro compared: Battery capacity in...

Macworld

Measuring MacBook battery life in straight hours of real-world usage (as Apple likes to do) is not always an accurate metric for comparison purposes as so many use and environmental factors play a part. We can, however, rely on straight technical specifications to tell us the stated battery capacities of each MacBook.

Where Apple is secretive about iPhone battery specifications (see our list of iPhone battery capacities based on teardowns), the company does list MacBook capacities in Watt hours (Wh). We have trawled through the Apple product Tech Specs pages from 2009 to 2024 to bring you as complete a list as we can gather using official Apple battery declarations.

The watt-hour is a unit of energy equivalent to one watt (1W) of power...

The future of the iPhone is coming but it’ll cost...

Macworld

It’s kind of hard to believe today, given how wildly successful the iPhone has been, that in the product’s early days there was only a single iPhone model for sale. It wasn’t until ten years ago, in 2014, that Apple introduced two different iPhone models, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. But that opened the floodgates, and Apple has spent the last ten years trying to find the right combination of new iPhone models to maximize the money it makes from its most important product.

If reports are true, next year Apple’s going to be switching things up again, dropping the iPhone Plus for a dramatic new model. After the discontinuation of the iPhone mini after two years and the (apparent) death of the iPhone Plus after three, what does Apple have up its sleeve for 2025?

The iPhone Ultra...

Apple Says US Antitrust Lawsuit Should Be Dismissed

Apple said on Tuesday it plans to ask a U.S. judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department and 15 states in March that alleged the iPhone maker monopolized the smartphone market, hurt smaller rivals and drove up prices. From a report: In a letter to U.S. District Judge Julien X. Neals in New Jersey, Apple said "far from being a monopolist, Apple faces fierce competition from well-established rivals, and the complaint fails to allege that Apple has the ability to charge supra-competitive prices or restrict output in the alleged smartphone markets." In the letter to the judge, Apple said the DOJ relies on a new "theory of antitrust liability that no court has recognized."

The government is expected to respond within seven days to the Apple letter, which the court requires parties to submit, hoping to expedite cases before advancing to a potentially more robust and expensive effort to dismiss a lawsuit. The Justice Department alleges that Apple uses its market...

Top 12 Mac games for 2024

Macworld

Unfortunately in recent years, the number of great games for Mac has declined because many are no longer supported. Every new version of macOS tends to break a few games, but macOS Catalina in 2019 meant that lot of games that used 32-bit code were no longer Mac compatible.

At the same time that Apple went 64-bit only it also introduced Metal for 3D graphics, which left a lot of games developers with a decision: make new Mac versions of their games or stop making them. Unfortunately many chose the latter.

This will hopefully change now that macOS Sonoma is here. With Sonoma, Apple provides two things: a new Game Porting Toolkit to make it easier for game developers to bring their games to the Mac, and...

A classic iPhone color is looking more likely than...

Macworld

At least once a year (and frequently twice) Apple shakes up the colors of its iPhone range. This is the subject of surprisingly feverish speculation: Is yellow going to face the axe in 2024? Will white make the cut? What’s the fate of green?

The latest word, in fact, is that white is in and yellow is out, at least on the standard iPhone models. On the Pro and Pro Max for 2024, meanwhile, we’re believed to be getting a new “rose” finish. This is all according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a reputable analyst with a long history of decently accurate predictions.

In Apple land, rose generally means a pinkish gold. It was highly popular back in the days of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7, but has been scarce since then.

Macs tend to maintain a good amount of value but some Macs are more in demand than others. MacBooks are relatively hot sellers, but on the other hand, there seems to be a glut of used Mac minis for sale. With inexpensive Macs like the Mac mini, it’s probably not worth the hassle of selling it and Apple isn’t going to give you very much for a trade-in.

So, why not keep that old Mac mini? There are many sensible uses for it, even if it’s past its prime. If you have an old Mac mini that has been replaced by a newer model, here are a few ideas on how you can put it to good use.

Here’s how a tvOS restriction keeps game developers...

When the first with tvOS and App Store was introduced in 2015, Apple tried to promote it as a kind of game console. However, years have passed and the catalog of games available for tvOS is quite small. While Apple TV isn’t exactly a super popular product like the iPhone, a specific tvOS restriction could be the main reason why game developers stay away from the platform.

Apple Slashes iPhone Prices In China Amid Fierce...

Apple is offering discounts of up to $318 on select iPhone models in China, hoping to "defend its position in the high-end smartphone market, where it faces increasing competition from local rivals such as Huawei," reports Reuters. From the report: The increased competitive pressure on Apple comes after Huawei last month introduced its new series of high-end smartphones, the Pura 70, following the launch of the Mate 60 last August. Apple's previous discounting effort in February appears to have helped the company mitigate a sales slowdown in China. Apple's shipments in China increased by 12% in March, according to Reuters' calculations based on data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). This marks a significant improvement from the first two months of 2024, when the company experienced a 37% slump in sales.

Anyone play Mega Man back in the day? That’s the first thing I thought of when I unboxed the new NuPhy Halo75 V2 mechanical keyboard. The awesome “blue lagoon” color just screams Mega Man, and the aptly named Halo75 puts on a really playful light show for your Mac as you type. Come to think of it, those blues also give 9to5Mac vibes…

iOS 17.5.1 update fixes rare bug that caused some...

Macworld

Shortly after the release of iOS 17.5 last week, some users started to notice that certain photos they had previously deleted (though not all of them) started to reappear in their photo libraries. Some of the photos were quite old, and there wasn’t any rhyme or reason as to which images would be impacted; some reported photos sent through Messages, others not.

There was speculation about Apple potentially keeping photos they said they deleted, among other accusations.

The mystery appears to now be solved, and fixed, with iOS 17.5.1. The release notes are as follows:

This update provides important bug fixes and addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted.

When you “delete” a file in iOS (and most other operating...

Apple has released its first bug fix update for iOS and iPadOS. The 17.5.1 release claims to fix a bug that saw some users' deleted photos resurface long after deletion.

The release notes list just one bullet point:

This update provides important bug fixes and addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted.

Users started reporting the issue after iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 were released on May 13. The optics certainly weren't great for Apple, as some users assumed that the company was keeping their long-lost deleted photos (sometimes nude photos, as some reported seeing those pop up again) in the...

M4 iPad Pro teardown finds easier-to-access battery...

iFixit's M4 iPad Pro teardown.

Right on schedule for past releases, iFixit has done a teardown of Apple's new, redesigned iPad Pro. It found that the iPad itself has one big improvement in repairability over its predecessor but that the Apple Pencil Pro is basically unserviceable.

The first step in the teardown video revealed arguably Apple's most interesting new tech: the "Tandem OLED" screen. It doesn't reveal anything we didn't already know and describe in our review last week, but it's neat to see what it all looks like up close.

The teardown also found that there are not one but two metal brackets all the way through the middle of the iPad to help with durability. Some worried that the new, thinner iPad Pro would be thinner than past models to snap in half, but durability tests have shown that's not the case. This could be part of why.

Macworld

From now until June 3, Apple is improving its trade-in offers for those giving up their old iPhones and getting a new one. The deal is good on any new iPhone purchase, as long as you’re trading in at least an iPhone 11 or newer.

The amount you get varies based on the model and condition of the phone, but trade-in values are going up from $10 to $30. An iPhone 13 used to have a trade-in value of $300, but you’ll get $320 until June 3, for example.

Apple is planning to launch the iPhone 16 in September, but if you need a new iPhone now, this is a great chance...

iPhone 17 Ultra could be the next iPhone X moment

I still remember my first moments with an iPhone X. It felt like something from the future: the OLED display, Face ID, all-screen design, new UX paradigms for navigation. The iPhone X truly was a leap forward for the iPhone following several years of iterative updates.

Per the latest reporting, next year’s iPhone 17 might bring with it another iPhone X-style moment. A new ultra-thin iPhone model is said to be the new highest-end model, perhaps sporting the name iPhone 17 Ultra.

Macworld

Apple’s list of currently available content for Apple TV+ continues to grow, and so does the list of upcoming projects in the works. Films, limited series, specials, and multi-season series—Apple’s got lots of irons in the fire.d

Some of these projects have been officially announced and acknowledged by Apple, while others have been reported by the Hollywood press, which always has its ear to the ground about what projects actors, directors, and producers are involved in.

We’ve divided this list in two: Coming Soon is a list of shows for which Apple has given an official release date or release window, and Further Out compiles content that is still in production or perhaps haven’t even begun yet.

Updated 05/20/23: Apple has announced...

In the latest Power On Newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple will be upgrading the AirTag in the middle of 2025. The upgrade would be the first since the tracking device was released in April 2021.

As for what the upgrade will include, Gurman states it will have “a better chip with improved location tracking.” The current AirTag has Apple’s U1 chip, which uses ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to give a device with the chip spatial awareness. With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple released a second-generation UWB chip with better precision. So, it...

Fast-forward to 2024 and Incase has brought back another crowd pleaser with their ICON case line.

The Incase ICON case design is much more mature than the Bird’s Nest Snap case line that I favored back in the day. The ICON case line for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is more like —just without the drama.
