Today the Unicode Consortium previewed the new emoji that are expected to be added to Apple’s upcoming OS updates, including iOS and iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and more. Apple Says US Antitrust Lawsuit Should Be Dismissed
Apple said on Tuesday it plans to ask a U.S. judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department and 15 states in March that alleged the iPhone maker monopolized the smartphone market, hurt smaller rivals and drove up prices. From a report: In a letter to U.S. District Judge Julien X. Neals in New Jersey, Apple said "far from being a monopolist, Apple faces fierce competition from well-established rivals, and the complaint fails to allege that Apple has the ability to charge supra-competitive prices or restrict output in the alleged smartphone markets." In the letter to the judge, Apple said the DOJ relies on a new "theory of antitrust liability that no court has recognized."

Shortly after the release of iOS 17.5 last week, some users started to notice that certain photos they had previously deleted (though not all of them) started to reappear in their photo libraries.Some of the photos were quite old, and there wasn’t any rhyme or reason as to which images would be impacted; some reported photos sent through Messages, others not.
There was speculation about Apple potentially keeping photos they said they deleted, among other accusations.
The mystery appears to now be solved, and fixed, with iOS 17.5.1. The release notes are as follows:

Back in 2020, Apple offered selected developers a custom DTK Mac mini with the A12Z Bionic chip inside, so that they could develop apps for the Apple Silicon platform. After the official launch of the M1 Macs, developers had to return their DTK Mac mini to Apple, which scrapped the machines. But one of these scrapped DTKs was successfully restored.

Apple has released its first bug fix update for iOS and iPadOS. The 17.5.1 release claims to fix a bug that saw some users' deleted photos resurface long after deletion.
The release notes list just one bullet point:
This update provides important bug fixes and addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted.

M4 iPad Pro teardown finds easier-to-access battery...
iFixit's M4 iPad Pro teardown.
Right on schedule for past releases, iFixit has done a teardown of Apple's new, redesigned iPad Pro. It found that the iPad itself has one big improvement in repairability over its predecessor but that the Apple Pencil Pro is basically unserviceable.
The first step in the teardown video revealed arguably Apple's most interesting new tech: the "Tandem OLED" screen. It doesn't reveal anything we didn't already know and describe in our review last week, but it's neat to see what it all looks like up close.
The teardown also found that there are not one but two metal brackets all the way through the middle of the iPad to help with durability. Some worried that the new, thinner iPad Pro would be thinner than past models to snap in half, but durability tests have shown that's not the case. This could be part of why.

From now until June 3, Apple is improving its trade-in offers for those giving up their old iPhones and getting a new one. The deal is good on any new iPhone purchase, as long as you’re trading in at least an iPhone 11 or newer.
The amount you get varies based on the model and condition of the phone, but trade-in values are going up from $10 to $30. An iPhone 13 used to have a trade-in value of $300, but you’ll get $320 until June 3, for example.

Report: A new AirTag is coming next year but not...

In the latest Power On Newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple will be upgrading the AirTag in the middle of 2025. The upgrade would be the first since the tracking device was released in April 2021.
As for what the upgrade will include, Gurman states it will have “a better chip with improved location tracking.” The current AirTag has Apple’s U1 chip, which uses ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to give a device with the chip spatial awareness. M3/M4 Mac Studio: Everything you need to know

The M2 Max and Ultra Mac Studio were released at WWDC23 last June, and the M3 era of Apple’s System on a Chip started last November. So, with WWDC24 creeping up on us, it’s time to start looking forward to the next Mac Studio.
The rumors will start to increase as June 2024 approaches, and whatever is reported now can change (and likely will) before the new Mac Studio is released. We’ll keep track of what’s being said in this article.
