Spending a Week With the Apple Watch SE: Should You...

Today we’re taking a look at the new Apple Watch SE. Announced during the September Far Out event, the SE was released alongside the Apple Watch Series 8 and the Apple Watch Ultra.

While the Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra pack far more features than the Apple Watch SE, there’s still a lot that the SE has to offer. With that, let’s take a look at my experiences using the Apple Watch SE over the past week.

Apple Watch SE: A Great Starting Point

Personally, I’m not really a watch person. Well, at least I wasn’t. Since first getting a cell phone way back when, simply checking the time on my phone was all I needed. Prior to this, I wasn’t entirely a fan of wearing watches or things around my wrist in the first place. Has the Apple Watch SE changed this opinion? Yes, somewhat. Let’s take a look.

If you’re looking for my experience in purchasing the Apple Watch SE,...

Recently, iconic actor James Earl Jones announced he is retiring from voicing Darth Vader. The 91-year-old has voiced the Sith Lord for 45 years, beginning in 1977 and finishing in 2019. Fear not, though, as the magic of AI (and Mr. Jones’ agreement) allows the voice of Darth Vader to live on through an AI-powered voice modeling tool.

James Earl Jones Allows His Voice to be Cloned

James Earl Jones has had a long, prolific career. Star Wars fans may best know him as the mechanical, synthesized voice of Darth Vader, but the actor mentioned in 2019 he was looking into “winding down this particular character.” This meant Lucasfilm needed to find a way to keep recording that well-known voice.

The answer came from Ukraine, by way of a voice cloning tool called Respeecher....

iPhone 15 Pro Max could turn into 'Ultra'...

Apple's fall iPhone lineup for 2023 could see Apple revamp the design of the iPhone 15, a report claims, with the high-end model becoming "Ultra."Apple's introduction of the iPhone 14 and Pro models largely consisted of an internal spec bump rather than an overhaul, with little externally different compared to one year prior. For 2023, it is suggested that there could be a lot more visible changes, as well as a new name.In opinions on the iPhone 14 lineup for Bloomberg's "Power On" newsletter, Mark Gurman reckons that the cadence of Apple's previous iPhone refreshes puts the next model as due a major refresh. He cites how the iPhone 6's aesthetic stuck around until the iPhone 8, the iPhone X's design until the iPhone 11...

iOS 16 review: Customization unlocked

Enlarge / The (customized) lock screen in iOS 16. (credit: Samuel Axon)

For the past couple of years, Apple’s annual iOS updates have laser focused on one feature for an overhaul while making smaller tweaks to everything else. Last year, Focus was the, well, focus. The year before that, it was the home screen.

This time it’s the lock screen. You can now change fonts, add widgets, customize the information displayed, and pick from a wider variety of wallpaper. Apple has also more deeply integrated the lock screen with the Focus modes that were fleshed out in iOS 15. And it has laid the groundwork for something more than just notifications that third-party apps can show you before...

Ask Slashdot: What High-End Smartphone Is Best For...

New submitter cj9er writes: Considering all the privacy issues in today's online climate (all the issues with Meta right now), what is the best high-end smartphone to select? Apple: No way they don't sell your data... Sure, they have privacy for third-party apps, but what about the data they collect from the phone itself? Consider what the revenue is on a single smartphone (say $150), how do you think they have all that cash on hand?

Google: Yeah right, Pixel is probably collecting [data] 24/7 considering their main business is selling ads on Search. They have developed the Pixel line because they probably realized they were missing out on the direct collection of data from their own hardware (cut out the middle players using Android).
Samsung: Their TVs even collect and sell data on you. I don't really understand the price premium on Galaxy phones anyways. I have kept my data and Wi-Fi turned off on my phones for years. Initially it was for battery reasons but now add...

Apple support doc talks about using the Depth app on...

Don’t replace your deep dive watch with an Apple Watch Ultra just yet. Apple has published a new support document detailing how to use the Depth app that measures water temperature, duration, and depth to 130 feet (40 meters).
From Apple’s support doc: Underwater activities are risky. The Depth app isn't a dive computer and doesn't provide decompression stop information, gas analysis, or other recreational scuba diving functionality. If you're using Apple Watch Ultra where the failure of the device could lead to death, personal injury, or severe environmental damage, always use a secondary depth gauge and timer/watch. Before going on a dive, be sure your Apple Watch Ultra is free of cracks or other damage.

Meta Sued For Skirting Apple Privacy Rules To Snoop...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Bloomberg: Meta was sued for allegedly building a secret work-around to safeguards that Apple launched last year to protect iPhone users from having their internet activity tracked. In a proposed class-action complaint filed Wednesday in San Francisco federal court, two Facebook users accused the company of skirting Apple's 2021 privacy rules and violating state and federal laws limiting the unauthorized collection of personal data. A similar complaint was filed in the same court last week. The suits are based on a report by data privacy researcher Felix Krause, who said that Meta's Facebook and Instagram apps for Apple's iOS inject JavaScript code onto websites visited by users. Krause said the code allowed the apps to track "anything you do on any website," including typing passwords.

According to the suits, Meta's collection of user data from the Facebook app helps it circumvent rules instituted by Apple in 2021 requiring all third...
