Apple has frequently said that it aims to do the right thing even when it doesn’t make financial sense, and any shareholders who aren’t happy with that should get out of the stock.

The iPhone maker yesterday reiterated that stance, and joined with 180 other big businesses in declaring that it was time for a new understanding of the purpose of a corporation …

Any day now, the Apple Card will be available to tens of millions of U.S. consumers. And it’s definitely getting plenty of hype.

With that slick white titanium card, the purchase tracking, the security features… it’s easy to understand why you might want it.

But it’s ultimately still a MasterCard credit card backed by a big multinational bank, and before you apply for it, you should really ask yourself these five questions.

Can you always pay it off?

Do you intend to fully pay off your Apple Card every month, or will you run a balance?

How to add an Infrared remote-controlled accessory...

Theoretically, HomeKit supports fans as a smart home accessory. There are some HomeKit ceiling fans already on sale, but what I’ve been holding out for is a HomeKit tower fan for my office. Unfortunately, there aren’t really any to speak of.

After years of waiting, and a particularly hot summer, I gave up and explored the enthusiast route. I bought a standard fan with an IR remote control and set out to induct it into my HomeKit home using Homebridge…

Leaked assets hint at upcoming ceramic, titanium...

The Apple leaks continue, a new set of images indicating that Apple is on the verge of offering both a new ceramic Apple Watch and a new titanium Watch.

Apple has sold ceramic watches in the past but did not offer a ceramic Series 4, and titanium is a wholly new direction for Apple Watch case materials.

The leak apparently emanated from a recent set of Apple Watch firmware, the assets showing show animation playing when the device is first set up. The animation mimics the back design of the Watch featuring the model name and the iconic ‘Designed by Apple in California’ signature.

The pictured assets are clearly destined for the 44mm watch screen, but iHelpBR has also found equivalent assets for the 40mm watch.

At the beginning of 2019, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple would launch a new ceramic Apple Watch.

Apple debuted the ceramic Apple Watch Edition line with the Series 2, offering it in a white color. For the Series 3 generation,...

Rumor: APIs, early access program, points to $5/...

Apple employees have, as expected, been granted early access to Apple Arcade this summer. A leak from the APIs suggests that the launch price will be $4.99 per month.

Employees taking place in the Apple Arcade early access program are apparently charged $0.49 with a one-month free trial. The program is thought to be ending upon the release of iOS 13 to the public. Apple is also rumored to be launching the next-gen iPhone with a September 10th keynote. The keynote is expected to launch services like Apple Arcade and Apple TV+.

Per the article:

“Today, I was able to get information about the price of an Apple Arcade subscription to customers. This information is available in one of the APIs used by the App Store app. According to a promotional message found in the service, the price for Apple Arcade will be $4.99 / month, including a one-month free trial. As Apple previously announced, the service will allow access to all members in a Family Sharing account.”...

Some Companies Don’t Like iOS 13 Location Privacy...

App developers wrote a letter to Apple saying how much they don’t like iOS 13 location privacy rules, accusing the company of anti-competitive behavior.

We understand that there were certain developers, specifically messaging apps, that were using this as a backdoor to collect user data. While we agree loopholes like this should be closed, the current Apple plan to remove [access to the internet voice feature] will have unintended consequences: it will effectively shut down apps that have a valid need for real-time location.

The letter was signed by Tile CEO CJ Prober; Arity (Allstate) president Gary Hallgren; CEO of Life360, Chris Hullsan; CEO of dating app Happn, Didier Rappaport; CEO of Zenly (Snap), Antoine Martin; CEO of Zendrive, Jonathan Matus; and chief strategy officer of social networking app Twenty, Jared Allgood.

A helpful list of all the apps I’ll never download. I hope Apple does more when it comes to privacy.

Hacker Releases First Public Jailbreak for Up-to-...

Apple has mistakenly made it a bit easier to hack iPhone users who are on the latest version of its mobile operating system iOS by unpatching a vulnerability it had already fixed. From a report: Hackers quickly jumped on this over the weekend, and publicly released a jailbreak for current, up-to-date iPhones -- the first free public jailbreak for a fully updated iPhone that's been released in years. Security researchers found this weekend that iOS 12.4, the latest version released in June, reintroduced a bug found by a Google hacker that was fixed in iOS 12.3. That means it's currently relatively easy to not only jailbreak up to date iPhones, but also hack iPhone users, according to people who have studied the issue.

"Due to 12.4 being the latest version of iOS currently available and the only one which Apple allows upgrading to, for the next couple of days (till 12.4.1 comes out), all devices of this version (or any 11.x and 12.x below 12.3) are jail breakable -- which...

Developers Accuse Apple of Anti-Competitive Behavior...

A group of app developers have penned a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook, arguing that certain privacy-focused changes to Apple's iOS 13 operating system will hurt their business. From a report: In a report by The Information, the developers were said to have accused Apple of anti-competitive behavior when it comes to how apps can access user location data. With iOS 13, Apple aims to curtail apps' abuse of its location-tracking features as part of its larger privacy focus as a company. Today, many apps ask users upon first launch to give their app the "Always Allow" location-tracking permission. Users can confirm this with a tap, unwittingly giving apps far more access to their location data than is actually necessary, in many cases. In iOS 13, however, Apple has tweaked the way apps can request location data. There will now be a new option upon launch presented to users, "Allow Once," which allows users to first explore the app to see if it fits their needs before granting the app...

Report: Apple Arcade could cost $4.99 per month

Apple’s upcoming Apple Arcade service was announced at its March 25 “It’s Show Time” event, and immediately caused speculation about the games its price and games lineup. Now we may have the answer to at least one of those questions.

Credit for this latest revelation goes to a bit of good sleuthing from 9to5Mac. The site went digging through some of the APIs used by the App Store app and found a promotional message that says the service will cost $4.99 per month, including a one-month free trial.

Apple has reportedly begun testing of the service with its own employees, using a largely-symbolic price of $0.49, lending some weight to the $4.99 price discovery: If the service were to cost $9.99, the “test price” might be $0.99, for instance.

Apple places 16th on Fortune’s ‘Change the World’...

Apple comes in at 16th place on Fortune’s “Change the World” list, which highlights companies that leverage their businesses to drive profit and to create societal good.

A high proportion of its supply chain, for example, is powered by renewable energy. More recently, Apple has begun tacking one of its industry’s thornier problems: The fast-growing amount of often-toxic detritus created by discarded electronic gear. Apple in 2017 announced a goal of making all of its products from recycled or renewable material—and eventually, only from such material. In April, it opened its Material Recovery Lab in Austin, Texas, where the company is doing the research that it hopes will get it there. Among its innovations: A robotic recycling system called Daisy, which can...

The Retreat That Tech Execs Escape to

The world can rest heavy on the shoulders of top tech execs. The New Yorker revealed the retreat that some, including those from Apple, escape to as they struggle with crises of conscience.

There are many upscale New Age retreat centers (Kripalu, in Massachusetts; Feathered Pipe Ranch, in Montana) where stressed-out executives can spend restorative weekends before returning to work with looser hip flexors and a clearer conscience.
