Apple’s iPhone tops the list of least depreciating...

Apple’s iPhones tops the least of the least depreciating smartphone brands, according to new data from Sellcell, a site for selling phones online.

SellCell, with the help of its phone buyback partners, took into account five of the well-known players in the smartphone business: Apple, Samsung, Google, Sony, and LG.

This year’s results go in line with that of last year’s for the most part. Apple once again blows the competition out of the water, retaining the first position as the least depreciating smartphone brand.

Sellcell says the best at holding its value is the $1,099 Apple iPhone XS Max, which has lost only 47.2% of its value in a year since its release, making it worth $580. The next five places in the Sellcell chart are occupied by one or another iPhone.

The results also resonate with Sellcell’s...

Beats debuts Solo Pro on-ear headphone

Apple subsidiary, Beats by Dr. Dre (Beats), has debuted the $299.95 Solo Pro, its first on-ear, noise-cancelling headphone.

A refined driver with optimized diaphragm geometries contributes an exceptional frequency response with lower total harmonic distortion, while two beam-forming microphones and an updated speech-detecting accelerometer provide audio quality for voice and video calls and enhanced voice pickup for “Hey Siri” functionality, he adds.

After testing with users, Beats redesigned the on-ear cushions with a remodeled enclosure for more comfort. Exposed metal sliders enable a more durable and personalized fit, making the headphones more accommodating to users than ever before, says Wood.

I also want the ability to shoot 30-second exposures on demand, not when my camera decides it’s dark enough to permit...

Apple granted another patent for an ‘Apple Ring’...

Could Apple have another wearable device planned in addition to the Apple Watch? Possibly. The company has been granted another patent for an “Apple Ring.”

The patent — dubbed “devices, methods, and user interfaces for a wearable electronic ring computing device” — would allow the wearer to control an external electronic device (an iPad, Mac, or even a TV, perhaps) with a finger-ring-mounted touchscreen that includes a computer processor, wireless transceiver, and rechargeable power source.

Actually, Apple has a two-ring system in mind. One is worn on a first finger and receives an input from a second finger. The wearer could select from several touch events associated with the input with the command wirelessly transmitted to the external electronic device.

What’s the purpose of such a system? In the patent filing, Apple says that the use of existing touchpads and touch-screen displays can be “cumbersome, inconvenient, or...

Invention is for improved warning info system on an...

Let the Apple car rumors roll on. Apple has been granted a patent (number 10,446,018) for “controlled display of warning information” in a vehicle.

In the patent filing, the tech giant notes that vehicles often include one or more elements that can augment manual navigation of the vehicle, an occupant's ride experience within the vehicle. For example, an automobile can include a rear-view camera device that captures images of portions of an external environment that’s near the car’s rear end and a display the images in a display in the vehicle interior. As a result, the driver can navigate the vehicle and prevent hitting obstacles or people.

However, Apple thinks it can improve upon current systems. The tech giant’s invention involves a controlled display of prompts that proving warning info based not only on images, but also the behind-the-wheel history of the driver.

Here’s the summary of the patent: "Some embodiments...

Editorial: Will Apple's $6k+ Mac Pro require...

Apple's high-end pro market has long wished for a seriously fast Mac workstation. The premium new system Apple debuted at WWDC19 is one of the most expensive Macs ever, but it is being sold at a time when unit sales of desktop Macs are small and not really growing. Will Apple have to brainwash the masses to buy it?

How to switch from iCloud Photos to just plain Photos

iCloud Photos provides a great service. Deeply embedded into iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and iCloud, with the feature enabled, every photo you take and every video you record is automatically uploaded to your central iCloud account and then synchronized as a thumbnail or full-resolution image to all your devices linked to the same iCloud account that also have iCloud Photos enabled.

As photo collections grow, some people balk at paying Apple for increasing amounts of iCloud storage, however, and they don’t need or want synchronization across all their devices in quite this way.

You can shed the iCloud part of iCloud Photos and stick just to Photos if you like. You can then opt to sync a different way if you still want that feature—and at no cost.

Gillette Heated Razor is a cut above competitors (...

I can’t grow a nice beard like my AWT compadre, Steve Sande. Which is just as well, since I love the feel of a clean shave. I shave every morning, which is why I was intrigued to test out the Gillette Heated Razor.

First of all, let me point out that this is not a razor for everyone — mainly due to its $230 price tag. That said, I’ve never had closer, smoother, more enjoyable shaves than the ones I have with the Heated Razor.

Touted to “deliver the comfort of a hot towel with every stroke,” the razor comes with a heated strip that touches your skin as you shave. Don’t expect to get an experience as fine as a hot towel shave in a barber shop, but, as...

How to use Voice Control in iOS 13

iOS 13 introduces Voce Control, a feature that allows you to control your iPhone without touching it. To activate you:

  • Open the Settings app.

  • Tap Accessibility.

  • Tap Voice Control.

  • Toggle the Voice Control button to On.

Once Voice Control is activated, you'll see a grid appear across your iPhone screen. The smartphone is now listening for your voice. It will acknowledge your commands by dictating what you say at the top of the screen.

If, like me, you probably didn’t know what commands are available the first time you used Voice Control. For an overview of what you can say and do, tap Customize Commands. The plethora of commons are listed by category. Tapping one will show you all of the different accepted phrases that will trigger a specific action.

You can add your own commands by...

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo offers predictions as to iPhone...

When analyst Ming-Chi Kuo drops details as to forthcoming Apple products, people listen.

Late Sunday, the analyst released additional details as to the upcoming iPhone 2, which Kuo has previously stated will launch in early 2020.

Kuo stated that the iPhone SE 2’s body will be similar to the iPhone 8, and will arrive in 64GB and 128GB storage configurations with three color options: silver, space gray, and red. He also predicts that the starting price for the new cheaper iPhone will be $399.

He also stated that the iPhone 8 will ship with the latest A13 processor as well as 3GB of RAM onboard. This means it will have the same processor as the just-launched iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, albeit with 1 GB less RAM.

Not surprisingly, the handset will not feature 3D Touch functionality, which has been removed from Apple’s flagship 2019 iPhones.

Kuo continues to believe that Apple will announce the iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of next year.

Some eGPU configurations experiencing difficulties...

As promising as macOS Catalina is, its apparently failing to work with some external GPU (eGPU) configurations.

While Apple has steadily improved its eGPS support, a number of specific Mac and eGPU combinations seem to not be working.

According to user reports, it seems that Radeon 570 and 580-based eGPUs are having issues with assorted Macs, most specifically the current Mac mini.

Typical problems reported by many users include an inability to boot up the Mac with a display connected to the eGPU. If the Mac will start with the monitor attached, it immediately restarts. Others report their Macs freezing.

An initial test confirmed the issue with a Sonnet eGPU and the Sapphire 570 card, despite this being within Apple’s own developer kit only two years ago.

Various tests have indicated that the Vega 56, Vega 64, and Vega VII cards in any eGPU enclosure of suitable power aren’t affected by the issue. Additionally, an eGPU installed and connected to a...

Elusive 11: The terrible, hard-to-buy iPhone

Three wheat?

Three wheat and one lumber! That’s my final offer!
