∞ Phil Schiller’s greatest stunt

In honour of his semi-retirement, I wanted to post this from Macworld Expo in New York City in 1999. You have to remember that, even though WiFi was available, it was generally only in a corporate environment at the time and was hellaciously expensive. Apple, Schiller, Jobs, and the iBook democratized that and brought it to the huddled masses – and we broke free.

Indeed, Axios reported multiple sources claiming “Apple has expressed interest, albeit no sources inside of Apple, and that at least one other strategic has expressed interest.” However, following Apple’s subsequent denials, it looks like Microsoft remains the frontrunner to buy the Chinese firm’s U.S. business.

After more than 30 years at Apple, Phil Schiller is transitioning his role from Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing to Apple Fellow. Greg Joswiak will be promoted to fill that position.

Schiller’s words make it sound as though he is getting ready to retire, or at least “semi-retire,” and is transitioning away from most of his duties at Apple. While Apple is framing Schiller’s new role as an advancement—and indeed he will attain a position of high esteem within the company—it is a clear reduction in his role and influence. Schiller...

Is This The Last Intel-Based iMac?

As for the future, is this the last Intel Mac we’ll see? There’s no way to tell, though reading between the lines, it wouldn’t be surprising if there were some more Intel-based Mac releases as Apple progresses through its two-year-long processor transition. But I’d wager good money that the next time we see an iMac update, there won’t be an Intel processor at its heart. And perhaps it will look appreciably different, too.

5 reasons to buy a new 27-inch iMac rather than...

If you’ve been holding out for a brand new 27-inch iMac, the big day has arrived. While you’ll need to wait a little longer for that rumored Pro Display XDR-inspired redesign and Apple silicon inside, Apple has announced a “major update” to the 27-inch iMac, and it is more than just a summer speed bump. It changes just about everything about Apple’s all-in-one desktop computer and brings several compelling reasons to upgrade. Here are five reasons why you might want to take the plunge now and delay a switch to Apple silicon.

They’re crazy fast

The iMac has always been underrated for its speed, but the latest update brings a major boost over the previous model. The Intel 8th-gen processors have been replaced with 10th-gen chips that max out at an insane 10-core 3.6GHz Core i9 processor with Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz, and the graphics have been boosted from the Radeon...

Apple has updated the storage options across the board of its 21.5-inch iMac range by switching to SSD storage as the default, with users now only able to swap out the SSD with a Fusion Drive in their purchase. As part of Tuesday's refresh of the iMac lineup, the 21.5-inch models now have upgraded base storage options. All models now have a 256GB SSD as standard, a first in the model's history.A solid state drive (SSD) offers some benefits over a hard drive, with the chief one being generally faster reading and writing times. As an SSD doesn't rely on spinning discs like mechanical hard drives do, they are also more resilient to being moved around while power is applied, making them extremely useful for portable devices like a MacBook Pro.

Apple Updates the iMac With New Intel Processors and...

Apple is announcing updates for both the 27-inch and 21.5-inch iMacs. It's updating the processors inside to Intel's 10th Gen Comet Lake processors and also switching out the webcam to a higher-resolution 1080p HD sensor instead of the low-res 720p found in other Macs. From a report: SSDs are now standard across the line, and there will be a bunch of new configuration options -- including a "nano-texture" version with less reflective matte glass. The 27-inch iMac starts at $1,799, is available to order today, and will ship this week. The 21.5-inch iMac starts at $1,099 and will ship next week. Apple is also giving the iMac Pro a small spec bump, making the 10-core Intel chips the new baseline for $4,999 -- also shipping next week. (Oddly, the iMac Pro is not otherwise getting updated.)

This is not the major redesign that has been rumored (and hoped for), nor is it the first ARM-based Mac. Instead, the 2020 iMacs look identical to the last generation, including the large...

Today, Apple announced changes to its iMac product line, with significant upgrades in the 27-inch model, a move to SSDs in the 21.5-inch model, and more performance at lower prices for the iMac Pro.

The 27-inch iMac still has a 5K display, and its chassis is the same. Those hoping for smaller bezels will be disappointed. That said, Apple is bringing TrueTone to this display, and it's offering the same NanoTexture tech we've seen in the company's Pro Display XDR as a $500 upgrade.

It's also getting 10th generation Comet Lake CPUs across all configurations, with 6- and 8-core CPUs standard. The top available CPU configuration is a 10-core Intel Core i9 with Turbo Boost up to 5GHz. 8GB DDR4 at 2666MHz is still standard, but the...

Since October 2019 the FTC has been investigating Twitter over its use of personal data for targeted ads. Twitter has set aside US$150 million for the minimum fine amount but it could possibly reach up to US$250 million.

If it’s preparing for an unfavorable outcome, that’s probably because it’s not the first tech company that’s had to face the same allegations from the FTC. Facebook previously had to pay $5 billion for several privacy missteps, including the use of people’s phone numbers, provided for security purposes, for its ad business.

[VIDEO] Geoffrey A. Fowler, Washington Post:

What do you call it when there’s a little voice in your head only you can hear? A hallucination?

Amazon calls it progress. I’ve been living with its latest talking artificial intelligence product, called the Echo Frames, for two weeks. They’re glasses with tiny speakers and a microphone so you can have your own private conversations with Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant everywhere you go.

This new version of Alexa is much more proactive about chatting — and it has driven me bananas.

According to Amazon, there’s a waiting list to buy these things. I did get an invite, and wrestled with the idea of plunking down $180 to see this brave new world.

Reading/watching this, I’m really glad I didn’t. Don’t miss the video embedded at the top of the article.

Apple Card’s assistance program has been extended further into August.

Apple has announced that they will be extending their Customer Assistance Program for COVID-19 for Apple Card owners, which means users can defer their payment without getting penalized.

Sluggish economy and the corona virus pandemic has made it difficult for families to keep up financially, which lead to bill payment concerns. Apple and Goldman Sachs have established the COVID-19 Assistance Program as a way to offset the burden for August.

Apple Card holders will be able to defer for August without acquiring interest charges. A request to enter the scheme is required, which can be done by going into the Wallet app, tapping the Options button, then Message and choosing ‘I want to enroll in the Customer Assistance Program’.

The program is just one of many Apple initiatives for customers that need financial assistance. Others include the ‘Path to Apple Card’ coaching program, Wallet app...

Apple removes thousands of Apps in China App Store

Apple cracks down on apps in the Chinese version of the App Store as they didn’t have the license for in-app purchases.

Qimai, a data research firm has reported that Apple took out nearly 30,000 apps as a result of not having licenses from the government to offer in-app purchases. 26,000 of these are games. Reuters confirms that the June warning led to the July 1 removals, which includes games from large companies Zynga and Supercell.

Historically, the company has responded to regulations a bit slower than Google Play Store. Some games have operated in the platform despite the strict policies but have been taken down nonetheless. Before the removal, it was estimated that the China App Store had 60,000 games which needed a license to...

Blood Oxygen detection feature coming to Apple Watch...

Supply chains have confirmed that the ‘Series 6’ Apple Watch will have blood oxygen detection as a new feature.

The next model of the Apple Watch will have blood oxygen detection as part of its many health sensors. When enabled, this technology and others can help check for heart-related problems.

ASE Technology has helped develop the feature, and Apple has given the company the green light to work it on the Apple Watch 6. It’s worthy to note that ASE has worked with the Apple Watch since the first model.

Apple Watches have the hardware capability for this feature but it was not enabled until now. Apple’s VP of Technology, Kevin Lynch mentioned that it was the same for the smartwatch’s sleep tracking features.

The Series 6 Apple Watch is expected to be launched late this year. Typically, they’re announced alongside iPhone releases, which Apple says will be delayed.

An Apple Car could have displays embedded within any glass in the vehicle, with laminated glass sandwiching various other materials to block external light, emit its own light, or to display an image. The assorted computer systems of modern vehicles are, for the most, still operated via a dedicated display. This screen is usually mounted in the dashboard or infotainment unit, and is very obviously a screen when it is turned off.The need for displays limits how a car could be designed if it needs to incorporate them, and the parts used to create them give little room for maneuver other than dictating their size and placement in a vehicle.

Oprah Says ‘Caste’ Might be Her Most Important Book...

Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste is the latest pick for Oprah Winfrey’s book club, and it “might be the most important book I’ve ever chosen,” said Ms. Winfrey. Oprah to Become First-Ever Apple News Guest Editor

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents provides a new way of seeing racial inequality, giving rise to countless aha moments and helping us truly understand America as it is now and how we hope it will be,” Ms. Winfrey commented. The author described herself as “honored and thrilled” at her book being picked. The book itself uses stories from  Martin Luther King Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, and an ordinary single father and his toddler son to help identify eight ideological pillars underlining all caste systems.

As well as an exclusive excerpt on Apple News, there...

Original 2012 iPad Mini now classified as ‘Vintage’

Apple has added the original iPad Mini into the Vintage Apple products section.

The Obsolete and Vintage section includes devices who were discontinued for 7 years and onwards and those that have sold between 5 to 7 years ago, respectively. Owners of devices in the Vintage list can still get their units serviced by Apple and its service providers. For those who own Apple products in the Obsolete section, they’re out of luck- Apple does not provide hardware service anymore.

The first iPad Mini launched in 2012 and sported a 1024 x 768 display, up to 64GB in storage, 2GB RAM and an A5 chip. The second model was launched just a year later and carried the device’s features such as Touch ID and thick bezels.
