How to use Apple’s Siri in iOS 14

With iOS 14, Siri, Apple’s “personal digital assistant,” expands its knowledge, helps find answers from across the internet, and can now send audio messages. Keyboard dictation runs on device when dictating messages, notes, email, and more.

Siri has also gotten a face lift. Instead of filling the entire screen for a query, iPhone users will see Siri as a smaller graphic at the bottom of the screen when it’s summoned.

But, wait, there’s more! Prior to iOS 14, Siri results filled the screen. Now a notification appears at the top of the screen, providing the essential notes of the result and, sometimes, links to web sites you might wish to check out.

To use Siri, your iPhone must be connected to the Internet.  If you didn’t set up Siri when you first set up your iPhone, go to Settings > Siri & Search, then do any of the following:

  • If you want to summon Siri with your voice:...

How to change your name on your Mac's user...

People wind up with a new name, often one that better reflects who they are or have become, for all sorts of reasons. macOS can keep up with the name you use, so you aren’t staring at your past identity indefinitely. It’s not obvious, but you don’t have to dig into the guts of macOS, either. Just take care to follow steps carefully.

There are a couple of requirements:

  • You can’t change the name of an account while logged into the account you’re changing, so you have to have least two accounts on the Mac.
  • You must have administrative access from the account you log into to change the other account’s full name.

Warning! As with anything involving system-level changes, I strongly recommend initiating a manual Time Machine backup or updating a clone on an external drive in case something goes wrong.

Most Apple employees probably won’t return to work at Apple's Cupertino, California campuses before June 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CEO Tim Cook said yesterday at a town hall meeting, according to Bloomberg.

“There’s no replacement for face-to-face collaboration, but we have also learned a great deal about how we can get our work done outside of the office without sacrificing productivity or results,” he said, per Bloomberg, quoting unnamed “people familiar with the comments.” “All of these learnings are important. When we’re on the other side of this pandemic, we will preserve everything that is great about Apple while incorporating the best of our transformations this year.”

Cook also told employees that, because of the “challenges over the past several months,” they’ll be getting an...

Apple looks to beef up augmented realty maps on...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20200386570) for “augmented reality maps” that shows it’s looking at future ways to enhance the augmented reality (AR) features on the iPhone and iPad.

AR systems supplement reality, in the form of a captured image or video stream, with additional information. In the patent filing, Apple notes that, in many cases, such systems take advantage of a portable electronic device's imaging and display capabilities and combine a video feed with data describing objects in the video. In some examples, the data describing the objects in the video can be the result of a search for nearby points of interest.

For example, a user visiting a foreign city can point a handheld communication device and capture a video stream of a particular view. A user can also enter a search term, such as museums. The system can then augment the captured video stream with search term result information related to nearby museums that are...

Apple granted patent for ‘barrier detection’ for an...

Let the Apple Car rumors roll on. Apple has been granted a patent for “barrier detection” for a self-driving vehicle to make such it safe and effective in going from one destination to another.

Automated systems gather process large quantities of sensor data to identify objects in the surrounding environment. Apple says the processing of sensor data is often subject to a real-time constraint to facilitate navigation and robust control of the automated system. The tech giant thinks a lidar system could overcome such limitations.

Lidar is a method for measuring distances by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflection with a sensor. Differences in laser return times and wavelengths can then be used to make digital 3-D representations of the target. It has terrestrial, airborne, and mobile applications.

The invention involves systems and methods for barrier detection using birds-eye-view maps of lidar...

Heavy Is the Head That Wears the AirPods Max

What a fascinating product Apple’s new AirPods Max are. At $550, they are indisputably expensive, and at 385 grams, they are undeniably heavy.

They’re also, indisputably, very nice.

Apple sent me a pair to review (Space Gray, natch) yesterday, and I’m really not sure what to make of them. Here’s what I can tell you after a day and a half.

AirPods Max are quite heavy: 385 grams. My Bose QuietComfort 35 II wireless headphones weigh 235 grams. Other noise-canceling wireless headphones are even lighter. You can definitely feel the difference in weight. The AirPods Max headband does seem to distribute the weight as comfortably as it can, but the weight is all in the ear cups, and heavy ear cups are, well, heavy. When you remain motionless, you can forget they’re there. But when you move around, the AirPods Max have inertia. They move a bit when you shake your head side-to-side, and they move a lot when you nod your head up and down. Look down at your feet...

Apple CEO Tim Cook will to deliver remarks at the United Nations’ Climate Ambition Summit on Dec. 12, reports Reuters.

The summit is being held on the fifth anniversary of the international Paris climate agreement and ahead of U.N. talks next year in Glasgow, Scotland. The Paris agreement is designed to limit a rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which scientists say could stave off the worst effects of climate change.

In July Apple unveiled its plan to become carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030. The company is already carbon neutral today for its global corporate operations, and this new commitment means that by 2030, every Apple device sold will have net zero climate impact.

Original Jailbreak App Store Cydia Sues Apple for...

The iPhone's original -- and unofficial -- app store has sued Apple, accusing the company of having a monopoly on the distribution of apps. Cydia, an app store created and launched in 2007 by Jay "Saurik" Freeman, one of the original jailbreakers filed the lawsuit against Apple on Thursday. From a report: "Were it not for Apple's anti competitive acquisition and maintenance of an illegal monopoly over iOS app distribution, users today would actually be able to choose how and where to locate and obtain iOS apps, and developers would be able to use the iOS app distributor of their choice," the lawsuit reads. Before Apple created the App Store, Freeman and a group of iPhone hackers created an unofficial app store where users that were willing to jailbreak -- a technique to exploit one or more bug to disable the iPhone security mechanism called code-signing enforcement that allows for only Apple-approved code to run on the phone -- could download and install apps. In 2010, according to...

On AirPods Max foldability and Bluetooth sound...

There’s a lot to love about the AirPods Max. But two things that I struggle with are the lack of foldability and whether or not the audio quality lives up to the price.

On foldability: As a frequent traveler (this year aside), I value headphones you can fit in your pocket (the AirPods Pro are my constant companion) and, in the case of over ear headphones, those that can fold up into a relatively compact case, minimizing space in my suitcase or backpack.

Not a dealbreaker, but I am used to headphones that fold up, either into a ball, nesting the ear cups inside the band, or like the AirPods Max, turn ninety degrees, but then roll up inside the handle. As far as I can tell, the way the AirPods Max come in the box is as small a footprint as they get.

Next issue is the audio quality. Here are a few questions that I am digging into. I am not an...
