It has been over two years since Apple purchased Shazam, and it’s long overdue for an interface overhaul. On Monday, the Shazam app got its biggest update since the acquisition, completely overhauling the interface and improving sync.

In addition, the Shazam website has the ability to identify songs, once you give it permission to use the microphone on your computer, phone, or tablet. It’s a good way to quickly identify a song on a device you may not have downloaded the app onto yet.

From the vault: Apple, Microsoft to merge? Uh, what...

Apple and Microsoft, long time adversaries on many tech fronts, could merge in the next 5-10 years, Keith Fitz-Gerald, a market analyst with Money Map Press, said in a December 2013 post. At the time, I asked the question, “What's in it for Apple?”

According to The Times of India, Fitz-Gerald said the "unthinkable but absolutely possible deal" would/could happen so that Apple/Microsoft (Applesoft? MicroApple?) could take on Google's Android and Facebook. He said that if you look at "What Apple wants to accomplish with its mobile market and Microsoft's initiative, there's a cross-polarization of devices."

Again, what's in it for Apple? The company certainly doesn't need any form of Windows; macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS are doing just fine, thank you. Apple doesn't need any of the hardware that the Redmond company makes. And our favorite tech company seems capable of doing...

This 6-year-old racked up $16K in iPad in-App game...

Doree Lewak, New York Post:

Six-year-old George Johnson secretly racked up more than $16,000 in Apple app store charges for his favorite video game, Sonic Forces — leaving his mom in shock.

And:

While working from home during the pandemic, Wilton., Conn., real estate broker Jessica Johnson, 41, didn’t realize the younger of her two sons had gone on a shopping spree on her iPad. Over the month of July, George bought add-on boosters — starting with $1.99 red rings and moving up to $99.99 gold rings — that allowed him to access new characters and more speed, spending hundreds of bucks at a time.

And:

“[Apple] said, ‘Tough.’ They told me that, because I didn’t call within 60 days of the charges, that they can’t do anything,” said Jessica. “The reason I didn’t call within 60 days is because Chase told me it was likely fraud — that PayPal and Apple.com are top fraud charges.”

Jessica got no sympathy from a customer service agent, even after...

How tech can bring our loved ones to life after they...

Joanna Stern, Wall Street Journal (not the Op-Ed section):

Old photos, letters and tapes. Tech has long allowed us to preserve memories of people long after they have died. But with new tools there are now interactive solutions, including memorialized online accounts, voice bots and even humanoid robots. WSJ’s Joanna Stern journeys across the world to test some of those for a young woman who is living on borrowed time.

This was tough for me to watch, especially today. Too many losses.

But if you feel up to it, follow the headline link and watch the video. Dark and fascinating. This is a future we will continue to evolve towards, changing the experience of death.

Ben Smith, New York Times:

Mr. Cook, according to two people briefed on the email, was surprised to learn that his company was making a show about Gawker, which had humiliated the company at various times and famously outed him, back in 2008, as gay. He expressed a distinctly negative view toward Gawker, the people said. Apple proceeded to kill the project.

And:

But now, from beyond the grave, Gawker is revealing another reality in this era of media consolidation: that the chief executive of one of the biggest companies in the world, who testifies before Congress and negotiates with China, also decides what television shows get made. While some might object that such a test is unfair, I don’t think it’s unreasonable. Watch absolutely any YouTube tutorial on shooting video with a smartphone, and they will recommend the same two things: shoot with FiLMiC Pro, and get a gimbal. Some iPhone 13 models coming in 2021 will use OLED displays from Samsung with low-power LTPO technology, which paves the way for a 120Hz refresh rate, according to The Elec. The article says that Apple is expected to ship between 160 million to 180 million units of iPhones that use OLED panels next year.

The tech giant used OLED panels for its entire iPhone 12 line-up this year, and that trend is expected to continue. The Elec says two out of the four iPhone 13 models will use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) thin-film transistors (TFT). The iPhone manufacturing plant at Naraspura, India, run by Taiwan-based tech giant Wistron Corp., came under attack on Saturday from its employees over salary payments (or, rather, lack thereof), according to the Times of India.

The article says that a majority of the nearly 2,000 employees, who were exiting the facility after completing their night-shift, went on a rampage destroying the company’s furniture, assembly units and even attempted to set fire to vehicles.

Sources told The Times of India that the employee unrest was triggered by salary remittances made to them. Sources said the employees were angry that the company was not paying the amount that was promised to them at the time of joining.

Apple scraps plans for Apple TV+ series based on...

An Apple TV+ series dubbed “Scraper,” which basically would tell the story of the controversial blogging network Gawker Media, has been scrapped following orders from Apple CEO Tim Cook, according to The New York Times.

In May it was announced that Apple was in the early stages of developing a series about Gawker, for its Apple TV+ streaming service.

“Mr. Cook, according to two people briefed on the email, was surprised to learn that his company was making a show about Gawker, which had humiliated the company at various times and famously outed him, back in 2008, as gay,” the Times reports. “He expressed a distinctly negative view toward Gawker, the people said. Apple proceeded to kill the project. And...

How to reboot a HomePod or HomePod mini to factory...

Sadly, sometimes it may be necessary to reboot a HomePod or HomePod mini to its factory settings. Perhaps the wireless speaker isn’t updating its firmware automatically. Perhaps it’s not “finding” your Wi-Fi network.

Whatever the reason, if you need to reboot, here’s how:

First try to restart it with the Home app. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, press and hold HomePod. On Mac, double-click HomePod. Scroll down and tap or click Reset HomePod, then select Restart HomePod.

If the HomePod or HomePod mini still doesn't respond, reset it. Note that you should only reset HomePod when:

  • You want to reset HomePod to factory settings.

  • You need to send your HomePod in for service.

  • You want to sell or give away your HomePod.

If you have two HomePod...

How to unify your Apple IDs in macOS for Media...

It’s easy to wind up with multiple Apple IDs that you accrue over time, including for long-time Mac users who originally had a cloud-based account and an iTunes Music Store account, both of which migrated into separate Apple IDs. This can be particularly hard to manage with media and purchases, the collective category Apple uses for all the stuff you might buy from them.

In macOS 10.14 Mojave and earlier, there wasn’t as much transparency about which accounts were used for which purpose. You needed to launch every app with an account associated, like the App Store and iTunes, and check account settings. In some cases, you need to dig into account settings to check on subscriptions, too.

The iPhone may one day help you find a medical...

Apple wants its devices, especially the iPhone, to be able to help you find a medical provider and make it easy to transfer your personal health records between such providers. The tech giant has filed for a patent (number 202000387555) for “techniques for anonymized searching of medical providers.”

In the patent filing, Apple notes that users typically visit more than one health institution to obtain medical treatment. For example, a user may periodically visit a neighborhood clinic for annual physical evaluations and for minor medical procedures. An electronic health record (EHR) is a computer-stored and transferrable copy of a user's physical health record. The neighborhood clinic may maintain an instance of the user's electronic health record (e.g., using an EHR system, sometimes referred to as an electronic medical record (EMR) system).

When the user visits, a medical professional may update the electronic health record. However,...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 10,861,142) involving “gaze detection” for the rumored “Apple Glasses,” an augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed head-mounted display (HMD).

In the patent data, the tech giant notes that the technology for capturing video has improved and become less expensive, more and more applications with video components are becoming become popular. For example, mixed reality applications (applications in which real-world physical objects or views may be augmented with virtual objects or relevant supplementary information) and/or virtual reality applications (applications in which users may traverse virtual environments), in both of which video data may be captured and manipulated, are an increasing focus of development and commercialization.

For at least some applications, video data representing the environment may be processed at a device other than the video capture device itself; that is, video data may...

How Apple sweats the security details—and sometimes...

When it comes to Apple differentiating itself from its Big Tech rivals, there's one area in which the company has spent a lot of time touting its record: security and privacy. From the App Store to HomeKit, Apple talks a lot about making sure that your data stays yours.

This might seem like a no-brainer. After all, we trust our devices with the most intimate details of our lives and we live those lives increasingly online. But while we might think about very obvious places that security is important (like making strong passwords or using two-factor authentication), there are plenty of other ways that our private data can leak out.

Sometimes that means making smaller changes, ones that may not be as understandable or as easily explainable to the average user, but can have just as many significant benefits in the long run. Even just in the past year, Apple has made a few of these moves to help improve security in ways that you may not be thinking about—as well as one or...
